Dear FCA Members,Well, I've gone and done it. Yes, I have sold my 1986 328GTB and my 330GTC
and bought a 1997 355 Berlinetta. I had the 328 for 7 years and I had the 330 foralmost 18 years. Why, do you ask, would I part with such a splendid inventory ofFerraris? Well, as you who know me realize that I am not getting any younger, and Ifrankly am getting tired of working on cars. This, believe it or not, is no longer fun tochange spark plugs or replace a master cylinder for the brake system or to do otherscary jobs such as removing springs when you change worn out shocks.
My 355 is absolutely a miracle. I get in the car, turn the key, and it starts up andeven shifts into second gear easily, and when I get on the freeway, it goes as fast asI ever would want to go on a public highway. One comforting note is that, if any-thing ever goes wrong with the 355, I can’t repair it on the highway, short of maybefixing a tire or something like that. Yes, I will call the old Auto Club, get a flatbed, give the address where to deliver the car, and go on my merry way. No more dirtyhands, no more skinned knuckles, I’ll just make sure that my cell phone has plenty of battery power left in case of an emergency. Am I getting lazy in my old age? You bet!
If I really want to drive something old, I still have an ASA 1000 GT which is a 4-cylinder 1-liter Ferrari engine based sport car. You drive that for an hour and it bringsback all the memories of how something can be uncomfortable and noisy and literallyunsafe at any speed if you got hit by a bigger automobile. Yes, I’ve entered themodern age, and I am really enjoying it, air bags and all.

Ferrari and Pantera Picnic S e p t e m b e r 2 9 t h
B o t a n i c a l G a r d e n s , P a l o s V e r d e sArticle and photos by Tom Brockmiller
Once again, Don West, our vice president and host ofthis event, put on a sensational car show and picnic in thesouth bay area on a most beautiful Sunday.
Cars started arriving on the wet grass about 9am and we eachcarved out our area to picnic and visit with old friends or meet newones. We are reminded that this is a show, not a concours, and assuch we can indulge ourselves in relaxation and the bountiful gardenlocation. All toll, your Southwest Region turned out about 25 Ferrarisand 12 Panteras. An admirable showing of both marques. Our Panterafriends are always up to a bit of jostling about Ford vs Ferrari. We arequick to remind them that Panteras are a far cry from the famous CobraDaytona Coupes, with or without all their polished aluminum.
We were joined this day by a Ferrari group from the Valley andWest Side that are interested in forming their own sub-chapter of theFCA-Southwest Region. They will be calling themselves the MalibuChapter and you will see and hear more about them in upcoming arti-cles in this newsletter. For your information, the national board endors-es these chapters being formed to satisfy and perpetuate the needs ofindividual members, both socially and car related.
We concluded this days festivities about 3pm and were remindedthat of all the events we put on this one stands out for creating thebest relationships. Our thanks to all who attended, especially ourPantera friends, and to those who didn’t, we can only say, we’ll do itagain next year. See you there.
This annual event
allows everyone to
have a fun showing

Thanks to Chuck Betz and Fred Peters for hosting thisFCA event at the Corona Municipal Airport on Sunday,October 13, 2002.
It was a great mix of Ferraris and vintage airplanes and the viewfrom the hanger terrace was magnificent. We had over 20 Ferrarisshow up and we even had some members fly their airplanes in! Themexican buffet was superb.
Rides in various aircraft were available and there were several “flybys” by some interesting airplanes, including a couple of pre WWIIbiplanes.
A great time was had by all! Thanks again to Chuck and Fred fortheir generosity.

USPG Viewing at the Queen’s RanchArticle by Jack Queen Photos by David Katz
Beer, Brats and Ferrari? An unlikely combination but it all cametogether as the San Diego Chapter turned Rancho Santa Fe intoIndianapolis to celebrate the USGP F-1 event and another FerrariVictory.
Mobs of tifosi and thirty-five Ferraris ranging from a 1952 212Vignale Cabriolet owned by hosts Jack & Patty Queen, to new 575s, a550 Barchetta and an F-50, brought in by neighbor Charles Brandes andeverything, in between graced the Queen’s lawn.
Judd & Faye Goldfeder helped plan the event and David Katzbrought his slides from FCALA ’02 event. Everyone else had a beer, aMidwest bratwurst, watched the race on a big screen TV and kicked afew tires. Now that’s a good day! Let’s do it again next year, there islots of room for more cars.
A special multi gratzie to our sponsors; the new Ferrari of SanDiego (temporarily located in La Jolla) and Symbolic Motor Car of La Jolla.

Steve Tillack and his beautiful wife, Marcella, hosted
another successful Ferrari Club open house and dinner
party at their Redondo Beach race and restoration shop.
Even the rain did not mar such an extravaganza of cars and food.
He was well prepared, as usual, with awnings, tents and heaters.
As you all know, Steve’s location is the premier location for turning
out world class concours and racing cars, known at Pebble Beach
and the Cavallino Classic. His shop also prides itself on state of the
art diagnostics offering service to the contemporary Ferrari.
This evening, like the others, provided a real glimpse into the
international cadre of rare collectible cars being maintained, restored
and serviced. Each area of the shop from machining to body metal to
race prep is impeccably maintained by his crew of over 15 professionals.
Most important to the event was the wonderful opportunity to visit
with all our “car friends” from every arena of collecting and ownership.
Besides that, as attested to by our in house FCA gourmet, Don West,
the food was the greatest.
Thank you Steve and Marcella for creating this evening. SF
