PESIDENTS REPORT
A big thank you to those members and partners who made
the Changeover night a success.
Also to those members who assisted in getting the night
together.
At time of writing this report we have assisted the
Noosaville School Chaplaincy with a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. It looks as though
we have netted in the vicinity of $1200 which will be a great help to the Chaplaincy.
Thank you to those members who assisted with this project.
Although we were a few members down for the first dinner meeting of the year. We
were given an insight into sailing in a Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Lola's son Brett
gave the presentation after having sailed on the “Mates for Mates” yacht. Thank you
Lola and Brett.
At the next dinner meeting I wish to go through the committees and explain what
they do and also go through the proposed projects for the year so that all members are
aware when they are on.
During the year the President, Secretary and Treasurer will be away at various times
so your support during these periods would be appreciated. I know things will run
smoothly.
As President I am desirous that the Club does projects together and also
communication throughout the Club to members should be readily available.
The communication throughout the Club comes from the Pelican Brief, our web page,
dinner meeting minutes which are e mailed to members and Board meeting minutes
which are also e mailed to members. Attendance at dinner meetings is also a great
way to catch up with what is happening in the Club.
There are a number of things on in August – refer to the FUTURE EVENTS Section
of this Newsletter – so it looks as though we could be in for a busy month.
See you at the next dinner meeting.

Guest Speaker:
Introduction of Guest Speaker: L. McDonald
Lola mentioned that Brett was the eldest of 5

time at Amberley working on F11’s and at
Wagga as an instructor. Then on to the Hornets.

our waterways safe.
Presentation to Ken Plunkett from
the Noosa Yacht club disability
sailing. Giving the opportunity for
people with disabilities to enjoy
sailing the same as everyone. One
of the sailors is competing in the
disability Olympics.
Brett’s Talk:
Brett spoke of his depression anxiety and how in 2013 he was hospitalized.
Sailing became his goal.
He received an offer from Mates for Mates to sail in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. Basic training started in October when the group went to Manly to learn how to sail only one
of the group with sailing experience.
They had to take and pass a two day survival at sea course in a pool and then on to the 60foot boat.
21st November there was a naming ceremony for the boat with the then Prime Minister Tony
Abbott. Where Brett had to give a speech.
30/11 they had to sail 500 nautical miles to qualify for the race. 96 boats were entered in to the Sydney to Hobart Race.
They encountered 60 knot winds and 5 metre swells.
They were the 22nd boat out of 96 to reach Constitution Dock in Hobart. They won their division on handicap.
Received a medal from the RSL Mates for Mates
How many people are able to tick off their No 1 on a bucket list?
Vote of Thanks – Dave Watts
Thanked Brett for his inspirational talk and to get up and do something like the Sydney to
Hobart Yacht Race what a great achievement and wonderful memories.

SNAPSHOT OF A NEW
MEMBER –
David Kumeta
Started life in the village of Wigston, south
of the city of Leicester in the English
midlands.
Dad was an electrician, and mum was a
house wife as most mums were in those
days.
I had an older sister, Margaret.
At the age of eleven the family moved to Manchester for Dad to take up the position of
workshop manager in the family plant hire business with his brothers.
During my early teenage years I developed an interest in railways and steam engines, and
also most things mechanical, especially motor cars and motor bikes.
On leaving school at the age of fifteen I took an apprenticeship with the National Coal Board
as a colliery electrician. I didn’t like the underground work, and when the colliery closed just
after I finished my apprenticeship, I took the opportunity of redundancy.
During my time at the colliery, I developed a keen interest in speedway (Solo motor bikes).
Eventually gaining a place in the Workington team, where I rode for three years, and riding
in two test matches for an under 21 England team against Czechoslovakia
At the end of my third season, I decided to spend the winter in South Africa, where I met my
wife Carole, and we were married in Simonstown Court House in 1974.
We then spent another three years working our way around South Africa and Rhodesia,
living in Cape Town, Bulawayo, Salisbury and Johannesburg. Needless to say that was the
end of my speedway career.
On returning to England we could not settle and decided to emigrate to Australia, arriving in
Brisbane in May 1977, residing in a caravan at an inner city caravan park.
During this time we started a transport business, parcel delivery, taxi trucks and furniture
removals.
My first daughter was born at Royal Women’s Hospital and was taken home to the van, and
this was when we decided we needed to live in a proper house.
We found a house in Alderley where we stayed for a year before buying our first house in
The Gap. Not long after that our second daughter was born, and we also started another
business called Alderley Refrigeration and Electrical services, and eventually selling the
transport business.
From there it was almost thirty years of hard graft, operating our business from a base in
Pickering Street, Alderley/Enoggera, where we had a staff of fifteen people, and became
Brisbane agents for AEG, Gaggenau, Rossiers and Whirlpool appliances among others.
During this time we built two houses in The Gap, and I was a member of the Rotary Club of
Ashgrove/The Gap for twenty years.
We were fortunate enough to be able to sell our business in 2006 and since then we have
travelled extensively overseas in our motor homes visiting over thirty countries, and we also
moved to Noosaville, where we are today.
