54 Teton Valley Hospital’s First Nurse, Mary Ann Thatcher1939TVH opened its doors May 7, 1939, built on a foundation of Works progress Administration funds and community donations. More than 75 years later, Teton Valley Hospital continues to grow and change with our valley.

Teton Valley Hospital Expansion Groundbreaking1998Teton Valley Hospital leaders used golden shovels to break ground on a major hospital expansion in 1998. Community members donated over $1 million toward the $2.2 million project.

The current 16-slice CT scanner was installed in 2012 as part of Teton Valley Health Care’s ongoing promise to provide technologically advanced diagnostics for patients. An upgrade from the 4-slice CT scanner purchased in 2004, the unit is housed in a newly renovated exam room in Teton Valley Hospital.

Chemotherapy Hood2013Teton Valley Health Care began offering infusion therapy services in 2012, giving patients access to IV therapy in Teton Valley. A specialized ventilation unit for mixing and packaging chemotherapy medications, purchased in 2013 through a grant from the CHC Foundation, enabled specific forms of chemotherapy to be available as well.

Telemedicine2014Through an affiliation with University of Utah Health Care, our hospital entered the era of telemedicine and now offers 24/7 telestroke and teleburn patient support from specialists. Driggs Health Clinic also provides telepsychiatry services from portneuf Medical Center.

Paging Dr. ResponderYou now have one more expert on your healthcare

team. Introduced in 2014 to assist with specific

traumas (and named by a local 7-year-old

elementary school student), Dr. responder brings

top doctors from University of Utah Health Care

to your exam room. In real time, specialists in

neurology, burns and psychiatry can view and speak

with patients and their primary-care physicians

as added support for assessment, diagnosis and

treatment planning.

Dr. Blake Wachter Keeps it BeatingHearts matter. prior to 2014, people who suffered

from heart conditions had the added prospect of

driving an hour or more to visit with a cardiologist.

We believe that your specialist should travel to

see you, not the other way around. Our visiting

cardiologists agree. In affiliation with eastern Idaho

Cardiology Associates and the Idaho Heart Institute,

you can schedule a visit with Dr. patrick Gorman,

Dr. Blake Wachter or Dr. Douglas Blank.

A New BackboneFor a critical access hospital like ours, the X-ray

equipment serves as the backbone for diagnostic

testing. The unveiling of our new digital X-ray

and fluoroscopy suite marked a high point for

our patients and our healthcare team. The suite

underwent a complete renovation from floor to

ceiling to accommodate the new equipment and

create a higher level of comfort for our patients. The

new suite was jointly funded by a grant from the

M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Teton Valley Hospital

Foundation and Teton Valley Health Care.

The Lab Gets ResultsLast year, our laboratory performed more than 23,000 tests to help

support preventive health screenings and diagnoses. Generous

contributions from our community and Teton Springs Foundation have

allowed funding for sophisticated equipment and software to expand

our lab services, improve accuracy and decrease the wait time for many

types of lab results. As an added bonus, Teton Springs Foundation

awarded a grant to literally brighten up our blood draw room with new

paint and furnishings, including a comfortable, adjustable draw chair.

A Place to HealTeton Valley is a place of stunning natural beauty. We believe that

our hospital and clinics should be a reflection of our environment.

Beginning in 2014, we’ve adopted some of the proven tenets

of evidence-based design for healthcare to build a template for

facility-wide cosmetic renovations. Starting with a nature-based

color palette and an eye toward better functionality for patients

and our staff, we’ve taken the first steps toward creating a

healing environment for patients and their loved ones.

We’re small on the outside and bigger on the inside.

…the level of care was astounding. Medical, and more impressively, nursing care was professional, skilled, attentive and caring; as good or better than I’ve ever seen in 30 years of nursing. I saw nothing but best practices in place and truly respect all those with whom I came into contact.

Without the professional care and effort put forth at TVH during the first hour of my heart attack, I would not be here today. Due to the short amount of time it took to receive the proper care, tests, medications, transport and definitive care, my life will return to normal.

I hardly know where to begin with my praise for Teton Valley’s health care! From the receptionists to the friendly and helpful housekeeping staff, I was so pleasantly impressed while I recovered from knee surgery. The personal care I received was beyond all expectations.

I have lived in Teton Valley since 1977 and have never been a patient in the local hospital before, so I would like to comment on the care given to me while I was in your hospital recently. I could not have received any better care anywhere.

Earlier this month, I experienced a heart attack. I was delivered to the ER by ambulance and the hospital staff quickly triaged and stabilized me and sent me on my way via air ambulance to EIRMC where two stents were placed. I am told that only 8% survive this type of cardiac event. I believe the only reason I survived is because of the excellent care of the EMTs and ER team at Teton Valley Hospital. Our community should know the kind of work our hospital can and does perform as part of their routine day.

I had a significant skiing accident in which I broke my shoulder, with multiple fractures. Thank you all for your kindness and comforting me when I was so far from home. You have a top notch facility and I would not hesitate telling everyone what a wonderful hospital you have.

You all should feel proud of the great service you do in our valley, and after three weeks with you, we can tell you that we have never experienced more loving care.

everyone knows about the ripple effect; about how one decision can affect an entire lifetime. Maybe you don’t know about one particular day in the lives of a local family and how you may have been a part of their story.

It was a family gathering of relatives that started out as a barbecue and picnic. A child went missing. Family members searched and called out his name. He was found in a stream, under water. relatives jumped in and carried him out. The ambulance arrived. eMTs and paramedics worked to resuscitate him while they hurried to Teton Valley Hospital.

Family and friends formed a group at the hospital. It was late. Some people were wet from the rescue. Hospital employees opened the doors of the See N’ Save thrift store and gave them warm clothing and blankets. In the emergency room, nurses and doctors worked to find a pulse and get the child’s lungs to start working again. A medical helicopter was called. Specialists at an out-of-state facility were contacted and sent test results in real-time online so they could be prepared for the young patient being flown their way.

This story has a happy ending. The boy was returned to his family, whole and healthy. The word “miracle” has been used.

the toss oF a CoinWith the current healthcare climate in the US, it’s becoming more and more difficult for small community hospitals to survive. Since 2013, 48 rural hospitals have had to close their doors. Another 160 to 180 rural hospitals are operating on the edge of closure, with one in Texas announcing recently that it was closing its doors and one in New Jersey filing for bankruptcy. In July 2015, hospitals in the state of Hawaii laid off 128 healthcare workers in order to stay in business.

It’s alarming to see rural areas struggle to provide needed hospital services for their communities. We all know that time is critical when it comes to receiving emergency care. It’s also easier to receive medical care with help from a circle of loved ones nearby.

But maintaining a small community hospital like ours requires support from all of us. It’s the mission of our Hospital Foundation to assist with the development, improvement and expansion of Teton Valley Health Care, Inc.

Support can come in many ways. We have people in this valley who contribute time and/or money to help support our mission (and no donation is too small to be appreciated). Others support our hospital by utilizing our facilities and physicians for their healthcare needs rather than making the long drive to Idaho Falls, Jackson or rexburg. This has become easier as physicians regularly visit us offering specialities in cardiology, neurology and other services within our walls so our patients don’t need to travel for follow-up or screening visits. We appreciate these physicians who make the journey so you don’t have to.

Tweaks in healthcare reform and industry regulations will continue to have an impact on how we deliver and receive care in the United States, with a disproportionate share of challenges falling on rural hospitals. I look forward to meeting with many of you this year and learning more about how to strengthen our foundation so that we can continue to meet the medical needs of generations to come.
