They’ve been to the state tournament for the past six years in a row and are perennial favorites to win the district year after year. This year is no different for the Teton girl’s soccer team as they’ll once again, likely be the team to beat. They’re led again by Coach Sandy Buckstaff, who will be joined on the sidelines this year by his daughter, Brenna, as the assistant coach. Brenna was part of the Teton squad that last won a state title in 2007.
Sandy said this year’s team goals are the same as they are every year: to win districts and do well at
state. “There’s a lot
of talent,” said Buckstaff. “As long as we stay healthy, we have a real chance to do very well.”
Last year’s team was plagued by injuries and the team is focusing on
prevention this year with a lot of core strengthening and ankle conditioning. The players use wobble boards and do plyometrics at the end of practices.
Seniors Chloe Place and Angela Beard were part of the state championship team in 2007 and want to win another title. They said one of the strengths of the team is that they all get along, even though they come from different groups in the school.
“We never have any drama,” said Place. “We’re all focused on the same goal.”
The team is pretty evenly split between upper and under classmen. Much of the teams’ experience will be in the forward and midfielder positions, while a lot of the new players are on defense.
Buckstaff said they have, in his opinion, the best keeper in the state with Beard. In years past she’s also played sweeper, but this year will stay
primarily between the goal posts. Buckstaff expects his team to have
a target on their backs once again as the top team in the district. He said it doesn’t really hurt or help his team, being on the top.
“We’re just used to it,” he said. “It just comes with the territory.”

The Teton girls soccer team allowed their first goals of the season in a 3-2 loss against Snake River at home on Thursday. In the loss, sophomore Ashlie Hopkins suffered a broken ankle and will be out for the season.
Hopkins went down in the first half when a Snake player did a slide tackle and caught Hopkins in the ankle and took her down. Snake scored in the 36th minute. Hopkins went down in the 38th and Teton went into halftime uneasy. Coach Sandy Buckstaff said the girls might not have had their heads totally in the game. Snake River capitalized on that and scored two more goals in the first two minutes of the second half. Teton reworked their defense a little and Buckstaff said his team began to outplay Snake River in the second half. The loss, he said, wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
“It was our first real test,” he said. “And we won’t get many real tough tests until state. I’m glad we had this game.”
Amanda Otto scored in the 49th minute on an assist from Chloe Place. Abbey Oakley scored in the 70th minute on a corner kick from Kelsey Ward.
Teton will play at Snake River Saturday. Sept. 11 in a rematch. Snake River is the top team in the 3A District 5 and has been to state the past several years. They’ve beaten the three other teams in Teton’s district by five or more points this season.
Buckstaff said the game showed what they were made of and Teton came back and made it a good competitive game.
The Redskins took on Aberdeen Wednesday but scores were unavailable as of press time. Teton defeated Aberdeen in a previous meeting, 9-0. Their next home game is Sept. 23 against Sugar-Salem.

The optimists among us are still holding out for a warm and beautiful September,
but in the past week things took an undeniable turn toward fall. A few consecutive evenings of frost can really put the ‘hopper action down, but don’t count out other terrestrials such as ants and beetles, which can continue to be important even with the cooler weather. And if we do end up with a warming trend in September, the hoppers should still rebound and we could still see some great fishing on bigger dries.
The Snake on the Jackson side has really come into its own in the last week or so, with dropping levels (2600 cfs. at the Flat Creek
confluence), clear water and more and more big fish being seen. PMD’s have waned, but are being replaced by Mahoganies. For those unfamiliar with this mayfly, it is small to medium sized (typically #14-16) with a brown body. Cutthroats on the Snake aren’t terribly discriminating for the most part, and a simple Parachute Mahogany in the sizes described above will usually do
the trick. If you’re seeing a lot of these flies dropping to the surface of the water, try switching to a Rusty Spinner. Other patterns that are working well on the Snake right now include small Humpies (particularly in red in and yellow), H&L Variants
and Royal Trudes. Cooler weather should also prod some streamer action. Streamer patterns to try include Silvey’s Sculpin, Whitlock’s Near ‘Nuff Sculpin and Phillippe’s Flu Shot.
The report for the South Fork is very similar. Focus on the riffles for Mahogany Duns and Blue Wing Olives in the riffles on cloudy days. Mutant Stoneflies are being seen in decent numbers with the dropping water levels. Streamer fishing is also picking up. The release out of Palisades Dam is currently at approximately 8,000 cfs.
Finally, my deepest sympathies go out to the friends and family of Rob Merrill, manager of the 3 Rivers fly shop in Driggs and long-time Teton Valley guide, who passed away last week. I’ll miss our heartfelt discussions about conserving what we love, Rob. May your rivers continue to flow.

After losing a 1-0 heartbreaker in last year’s state championship game, the Redskins boy’s soccer team is focused on another successful season. The team has shirts that state, “We didn’t come this far, to only come this far.”
The Redskins are 3-1 on the season so far with wins over Rigby, Aberdeen and Bonneville. Though smaller in height, Teton is bigger this year in number of players. They’ll have a development squad for players who didn’t make the Varsity, but still practice with the team.
“Our squad looks good again,” said head coach Dan Romano. “We’re stating to come together as a team.”
Teton lost six players form last years’ team, including top player Oscar Mejia who will have to miss his senior year due to an injury. He’ll stay with the team as the student assistant.
The team has four seniors on this year’s squad in Captain Emmanuel Galicia, Victor Espejel, Drew Bakhshay and Jon Hendren.
Romano said they have much more of a team mentality this year and are picking up from where they left off last year. Another strength is that they’ll be in shape.
“These guys are fit,” said Romano. They’re also wiling to mentally engage, said
assistant coach Jim Miller.
“They understand why we are doing certain drills and listen off the field,” said Miller, adding that during the preseason they were practicing twice a day for four hours.
Romano expects some competition from Sugar, and South Fremont will be fast. He expects his Redskins to be in the top half of the district.
“We want to improve on last season,” he said.
Galicia described this year’s team as unified.
“We’re not just a team on the field, but off the field,” said sophomore captain Omar Martinez.
Romano said he is proud of the program Teton has built in soccer.
“We’d love to see people come out and support us and fill the sidelines,” he said.
Teton plays at home Thursday at 5 p.m. against Snake River.

The Redskins football team started the year with a win and is looking to build on that momentum this season. Teton hasn’t won a game since Sept. 28, 2007, and head Coach Bill Vasas said they are working on changing attitudes.
Opening the season with a 26-0 win over North Fremont, Vasas said his players were able to see their hard work over the past few months pay off.
“Our attitudes have changed and the kids are excited,” he said. “We were expecting to win.”
This is Vasas second year at the helm of the
Teton team. He said he’s been able to instill a different attitude in his players and gotten them to buy into the principles he’s used as a coach at other schools.
Vasas has also credited the school’s administration. A weight-lifting class has been added at the high school and athletes were able to get extra time in the gym last spring. That carried over to the summer and into the fall season.
“A lot of our success Friday was a direct result of those guys pushing and
working hard,” he said. In the district Vasas expects South Fremont
to be tough as they return a lot of players and are
well coached. He said they have a good tradition and are part of a system that has been tough for several years. He thinks his Redskins are the dark horse.
“We’re going to surprise a lot of people as we start to gel and get more experience,” he said. “No one thinks we’re tough, but we do.”
Key players this year are senior running backs Cedar Chapman and Tom Beard. Vasas is also counting on his young offensive line. Though young, Vasas said
they are a hard-working group. Other key players are seniors Dyllan Phillips, Andrew Foster and Nathan Abbey. Senior Zach Boyce is at quarterback.
“Our big thing is trying to get better every game and work hard on every play,” said Vasas.
Teton is at home on Friday against state line rival, Jackson. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

This year’s men’s and women’s cross-country teams are looking to repeat past successes. The men’s team finished second as a team last year and will try to take the top spot this year with plenty of experience and teamwork on their side. The women’s team is young and will rally behind senior Hannah Cheney, who finished in the top 10 at state last year and has medaled at state for the last three years.
Cheney is the only senior on this year’s women’s team and has almost as much varsity running experience as the rest of the team combined. Coach Heidi Eborn will be leading the women’s team for the second year. Coach Neil Gleichman said the women’s team is young and in general inexperienced, but “very willing to work hard,” he said. “I feel very good about this group.” Kelly Hannon, Emily Bates and Kelsey Wade also went to the state meet last year. The women took a trip over the Tetons a couple weeks ago as a conditioning exercise.
“I’m really pleased with how the
women’s team is coming together,” he said.
The men’s team returns a lot of experience and is “a pretty intimidating opponent,” said Gleichman. That’s because the team has thrived on running as a pack and most of them have been together as freshman
Brothers, Tate and Tavner Wilson along with Arlin Knight and Jake Woolstenhulme moved irrigation pipe together all summer.
“They sleep out under the stars together, they’re brothers,” said Gleichman.
The men’s Varsity team is even wearing vests this year with the Latin word “consanguinitas,” meaning “of one blood.”
The younger runners are learning from some very good leaders, their coach said. This is the biggest team Teton has ever had.
The men’s team lost to district rival, Sugar-Salem, at last year’s state meet. This year Gleichman said Sugar can’t touch the Redskins.
Both teams will be running at the Cardinal Classic in Kelly Park at Soda Springs on Saturday.

Under new head coach Brian Schultz, the Teton volleyball team is focusing on getting better and having fun. The Redskins didn’t have a wining season last year and want to
turn that around this year.
Schultz said their goal is to have more wins than losses. So far, they’re off to a good start, going 7-6. They lost their first regular season game to North Fremont in five games, but did
well in a tournament on Saturday going 7-5.
Senior Lannie Jorgenson said they want to make it to state this year. Senior Metayia Farmer said they are more of a team this year and are more positive on the floor.
Schultz said they’d be focusing a lot on passing this year, because when the passing is good, they can run a solid offense. They’ll also work on not having a slow start in games. He said it seems like they wait until they are four or five points down, before they decide to play catch up.
“It’s a mental issue,” he said. “We’re good volleyball players.”
Key returning players along with Jorgenson and Farmer are senior Sam Boyer and junior setter Peyton Larsen. Larson has been setting on Varsity
since her freshman year. Schultz said the goals the team
came up with this year are making it to state and becoming unified.
The Redskins travel to several tournament in September and aren’t home again until Thursday, Sept. 30 against South Fremont.
