The CEFR is an initiative of the COuncil of Europe and provides a mutually-agreed basis for assessing language skills.

In the future I'll refer to it as simply TESPIS.

Aim of TESPIS: to develop examinations for special subject areas such as therapy, chemistry, conservation science and more to come.

Basis of TESPIS: general international language examinations that already exist.

Purpose: to equip scientists with a good set of English skills and provide better employment possibilities for studying and living abroad.

These exams are designed for your professional field and are based on well-established systems such as the EILTS (English International Language Testing System) designed by the British Council together with Cambridge University), TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) etc.

The main purpose of the test is to see how well you can communicate and understand English. It is important that you can get across the points you are trying to make without causing any great misunderstandings.

The problems that result from bad communications are illustrated by a recent faux pas made by the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Mori!
