Objectives

Development a database of terminology for describing the qualities of aviation display clutter on a head-up

display (HUD)

Identification of pairs of meaningful terms that can be used as anchors for constructing subjective rating

scales to evaluate clutter in new displays

Completing Forms

- Informed Consent Form

- Demographic Questionnaire

Pre-ranking and rating Questionnaires

- View examples of display components

- Ranking and rating 14 semantic pairs of terms for evaluating internal perception after looking at example display

Post-FlightScenarios

Pre-FlightScenarios

Rating Semantic Pairs During Flight Scenarios

- Follow narrative of flight scenario for landing airplane at airport, including status, clearance from ATC, and required actions

- View sequence of 16 different configurations of head-up display (HUD) components

- Provide feedback on list of semantic pairs and overall display “clutter” for each display image by using rating questionnaires (paper and pencil).

Post-FlightScenarios

Pre-FlightScenarios

Rating other Images

- Provide ratings on semantic pairs for each of 16 other different HUD images, for two general phases of landing

- Ratings occur in absence of flight scenario

Post-ranking and rating Questionnaires

- Evaluating perception of pairs of terms, independent of display

configurations (presented during previous step)

Open-ended Survey

- Complete set of open-ended questions

- Evaluate perception of overlap / redundancy of semantic pairs

- Subjective comments on pairs and your suggestions
