With 2009 coming to an end, the real estate market is showing signs of improving. The remodelers in central Alabama have modified the business to better meet their customer’s needs. Our state and the

Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders and Remodelers (GBAHBRemodelers) have risen to the needs of our members with training classes, programs to help with our changing markets, design competition, weatheriza-tion training, and funding information on EPA regulations dealing with thenew lead paint legislation. Our clients demand good customer service and cutting-edge products.

Additionally, the green movement is driving some of our clients in a newdirection. There was a time not so long ago that the terms “green remodeling”or “sustainable building” conjured up thoughts of earth homes or solar panelson the roof. What exactly did it mean to build green—and how practicaland/or expensive would it be?

Fortunately, we’ve come a long way. And we’ve been led along that path by building and remodeling professionals who have defined green remodelingas an all-encompassing approach to making a home healthy, comfortable, and energy efficient. Energy-saving renovation, like replacing old windowswith newer energy efficient ones can have an immediate impact on your bottom line.

In this issue of Remodel Birmingham, several homeowners will share theirremodeling stories. Kitchen and baths are still one of the biggest investmentsin our homes and brings the most return on investment. For most of us, ourhome is still our most valuable asset, and improving it makes it more valuableover the long term.

CERTIFIED EXPERTS

When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying

a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identifybuilders and remodelers who have committed themselves tocontinually improving their skills and being committed to theirprofession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodelerwith a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, andin-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE BUILDER (CGB)The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribed stan-dards of practice, possess at least two years building industry expe-rience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledgesto uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGB course is designedto emphasize business and project management skills as the key toa professional building operation.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR)The CGR course emphasizes the development of business manage-ment skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation.Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standardsof business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodelingindustry experience, have a proven track record of successful remod-eling projects, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, andpledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics.

CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS)The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business man-agement and customer service skills essential for remodelers doinghome modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB RemodelersCouncil, in collaboration with the AARP, developed this program toprovide comprehensive, practical, market specific information aboutworking with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes foraging-in-place.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE ASSOCIATE (CGA)The CGA certificate program offers associate members an opportunityto enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home buildingindustry. Modeled after the CGB curriculum, this designation isattained by completing three required and three elective courses whichfocus on improved management skills and business performance. TheCGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually.

CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP)The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified GreenProfessional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and otherindustry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes – without driving up the cost of construction. Classworkleading to the designation provides a solid background in greenbuilding methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from theorganization leading the charge to provide market-driven greenbuilding solutions to the home building industry.

MASTER BUILDER (MB) / MASTER REMODELER (MR)The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of HomeBuilders is to further enhance the professionalism of participatingmembers and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must passa rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as MasterBuilder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee oftheir peers who review customer, supplier and sub-contractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage; and validate financial stability. Membership is reviewed on a yearly basisand failure to meet the program’s requirements can warrant disqualification from the program.

GRADUATE MASTER BUILDER (GMB)The ultimate designation for the building professional, the GraduateMaster Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. 12 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

Sometimes we allow forces outsideof us to dictate our decisions, plans, and actions. This has never

been as true as it has been in this cur-rent economic climate. Unfortunately, some of our decisions, especially thosebased on fear, hurt us more than theyhelp us. Waiting to put our plans intoaction because we’re afraid of the econ-omy may be the worst thing we coulddo.

Rather than lamenting that lemonthat life or the economy has thrown atyou, let’s look at how you can makelemonade.

Fortunately there are a lot of reasonsto do that project now, especially if youchoose a Greater BirminghamAssociation of Home Builders (GBAHBRRemodelers) member as your contrac-tor. Now that the economy is slower andthere are less people doing work, it maybe easier to schedule your dream proj-ect. And remember prices will go up—so do it now before the costs increase.

According to Sandra Kelley ofCounter Dimensions in Pelham, AL, intoday’s economy many area remodelingfirms and contractors aren’t as busy asthey normally would be. “It is a greattime to remodel and take advantage ofa large number of highly qualifiedremodeling contractors ready to startwork immediately,” Sandra said.

“Prices have never been more competi-tive and I also think clients will get bet-ter job supervision due to the decreasein work load. Some materials are lessexpensive such as drywall, but overallbuilding material prices have held.”

ADDING VALUE TO YOUR HOMEAs we all know, there are always upsand downs in the economy. For those ofyou who decide to go ahead now, youwill not only end up with a home that isworth more in the future, but you willhave added months and years of enjoy-ment of your remodeled home. Forthose of you with children, keep in mindthat their childhood doesn’t last forever,so why not maximize their time in theirremodeled home.

Now may be the ideal time to planyour dream vacation in your own home. Many years ago, I was speaking withsomeone who had just completed workto her home. Her family was planning atwo-week vacation. When I asked wherethey were going, she said home. Shesaid I now have the home of my dreams, why go anywhere? Look around and askyourself what changes you would like tomake so that your home will be moreenjoyable to you and your family. Thesechanges may include an upgrade toyour landscape, a face lift to the exteri-or of your house, interior renovations

that will add comfort and fun for youand your family, or even a completeremodel.

As you look around also keep in mindthat the project doesn’t have to be hugeto create the effect you need and want.A professional GBAHBR Remodelersmember can help you create that visionwhether it’s a large remodel, a medium-sized renovation, or a simple facelift.

Do it now so that you can enjoy itsooner.

IS NOW THE TIME TO REMODEL? ABSOLUTELY!There are several reasons why it is agood idea to remodel your home. Someof the most common reasons include:• The maintenance and repair of a

leaky or deteriorating roof or siding. • Inefficient windows, doors, or insula-

tion. • A growing family that requires more

space.• Expansion to a two-family home for

parents or children.• Outdated and inefficient kitchens

and bathrooms.• A home office to increase efficiency.• New and expanded decks to extend

living area for increased family timeand entertaining.

• Home media centers for increasedfamily time.

MAINTAINING YOUR HOMEMaintenance and repair of any homeshould be addressed promptly.Unfortunately in economic downturnsmany people put off repairing or replac-ing items like roofing, siding, gutters, etc.

This is always a bad idea when dam-age exists—it only spreads when neg-lected, which means a repair or replace-ment that could have been a manage-able expense turns into a major invest-ment. Your home in a good or bad econ-omy is still the single largest investmentmost people make and should be prop-erly maintained.

The housing market is cyclical andalways rebounds, it will again.Homeowners should be careful to main-tain and update their investment if theywant to reap the benefits later. A neg-lected or outdated home is a much

tougher sell in any economy and willalways bring bottom dollar to the seller.According to Kelly Watson, of BluestoneBuilding, LLC, in Birmingham, AL,energy efficient features, up-to-datekitchens and bathrooms, and low- or no-maintenance features will always attractbuyers. “Now is definitely the time totackle these projects; there are manygreat new products on the market to fitany budget,” Kelly said.

Additionally, more and more peopleare choosing to stay in their currenthomes rather than moving in today’scurrent economic state. “Whether youwant to upgrade your kitchen, or add ona media room, it allows you to enjoyyour home now—and it will increase thevalue of your home,” Kelly said.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FORSpeaking of budget, there are a lot ofcompanies that try to put a spin on so-called ‘bargains.’ Keep in mind that youget what you pay for. Consumers shouldget everything in writing and the con-tractor should take their time to reviewall the details not only before the con-tract but also after the contract is signedand before the construction starts.

Like any other business, remodelingcompanies have to make money especial-ly if the customer wants them to bearound in case of any warranty issues thatcan arise after the project is completed.

SAVING ENERGY SAVES MONEYAn energy efficient home saves moneyevery day. Replacing windows, doors, siding, insulation, and mechanical sys-tems will save the homeowner in thelong run. Examples of how this can saveyou money include:• Old kitchens and bathrooms waste a

tremendous amount of water everyday. This costs the homeowner moneyand adds undue stress on a resourcethat is quickly being depleted.

• Inefficient appliances and old wiringalso drain a homeowners pocket whileincreasing their carbon footprint.

• Installing solar & photovoltaic systemshelps both the homeowner’s pocketbook as well as the environment.

• Two-family homes are a wonderfulanswer to the affordable housing issuefor young families as well as their par-ents, saving both families money. Many companies are seeing this trendcontinue today.

• Rebates are also being offered forenergy efficient upgrades to homes.

YOUR HOME OUTDOORSAdditionally, don’t forget home’sspace just outside your front and backdoors. It's always the right time to addbeauty and enjoyment to your home. Most landscaping companies workwith homeowners year round toensure they get the most from theirproperty.

WHY NOW?It is always a good time to begin a land-scape project. Typically, plants respondto transplanting better in the fall orspring due to the cooler weather, ratherthan the hotter months of July andAugust. When companies are hired todo summer planting, clients areadvised to keep to a rigorous wateringschedule and a fall or spring plantingcan ease this some what. Also, duringthe fall into the winter months crewsbegin to slow down. Typically, land-scapers busiest time is from MemorialDay to Labor Day. When the weatherbecomes nice and a hint of summerarrives, their calendars begin to fill-upimmediately.

Additionally, the spring and fall area great time for homeowners to makelandscape improvements, as theyknow exactly what worked for themthis past summer in terms of theirproperty and what didn't. Also, thedesigners begin to have more avail-ability, so starting a design in thefall or spring allows you to have moreschedule options. Then, becauseyour design is finished, they can putyou onto the calendar for early springor fall the next year, getting a jumpon your enjoyment of a well-land-scaped yard.

Additionally, in terms of masonry, aslong as the ground is not frozen, crewstypically work well into the winter.

REAPING THE BENEFITSProfessionally landscaped homes tradi-tionally receive about a 10 percent to15 percent increase in their resalevalue. Given the tightening of belts byhome buyers, a professionally land-scaped home, with night light and irri-gation, can help you sell your homefaster, attracting a more savvy buyerlooking for these upscale amenities.

Even if you are not selling your home, the beauty of a professionally land-scaped yard cannot be understated. Awell-designed yard adds to your fami-ly's enjoyment by fitting your needs toyour property and not the other wayaround.

When this Oak Mountain, AL, fami-ly bought this 3,200-square-foot,four-bedroom, three full, and two-

and one-half bathroom home, about 12years ago, it perfectly suited their fami-lies’ needs. But now, Stony and JanetJackson, the parents of three children, are almost empty nesters and theythought that it was time that they makesome changes for their new lifestyle withtheir children nearly moved out.

The house, when they bought it, wasonly about seven months old at thetime; it was built in 1997. The kitchen, almost brand new, served them fairlywell over the years. However, now thatthey plan on entertaining more often, they decided that the kitchen desper-ately needed some major changes. “Weloved the kitchen when we first boughtthe house, but it quickly outdated itselfover the years,” Janet said.

Over time, the existing white paintedspec cabinets changed color, andturned into an almost cream color.“They really needed to be replaced,”Janet said. “I also wanted much morecounter space, and I needed a lot morestorage room.” Overall, the couple knewthat they wanted to replace the cabinetswith custom-made cabinetry andinclude a pantry, island, dry bar, desk, overhead, and base cabinets.

FINDING THE RIGHT REMODELERWhen Janet and Stony decided to moveforward with the project, it was time tofind an area remodeler. They did someresearch and got a referral from a mem-ber that belongs to their church—theowner of NJT Construction inBirmingham. “We knew the ownerRoger Self from church, so we talkedabout the project with him and felt

comfortable, so we ultimately decidedto go with him and his company,” Janetsaid. “We weren’t really close friends oranything, but it was nice that we knewabout him and as far as we knew, hiscompany had a good reputation.”

With Janet owning her own busi-ness—FlowerBuds—and having a lot ofexperience planning weddings and dec-oration, and Stony being an engineer, itwas important that they both be part ofthe design and they had certain ideasthat they wanted to implement withintheir new kitchen. “Roger worked verywell with us,” she said. “We wanted toincorporate certain artistic elementsinto the design, such as the moldingthroughout, and they really listened tous and let us help design the project.”

An important request that the home-owners had was that the project be donein about six weeks’ time. They began

June 1st and finished June 30th. “Thatwas very important to me,” Janet said.

COMING UP WITH IDEASWhen they first decided to remodeltheir kitchen, Janet knew exactly whatshe wanted for her dream kitchen. Janetpicked out granite countertops in abamboo green color, and decided to putan island in with a green subway tilebacksplash to match. “My favorite col-ors are different colors of greens; itturned out beautiful,” Janet said.

Another important aspect of design-ing a new kitchen, the couple wanted toget the ‘most bang for their buck.’ Theypaid close attention to measuring outthe space so they could utilize everyinch of space available to them.

The first thing they did was pick outtheir appliances. “The appliances werevery important to me,” Janet said. “Iwanted very high-end appliances andwe got a really good deal on them. Wepicked them out first and decidedwhere we wanted them located in thenew space, and basically had the newcustom-built cabinets built aroundthem.” Her oversized refrigerator anddishwasher doors were made to matchthe cabinets.

The new appliances include a cabi-net-front GE Mongram series refrigera-

tor, a GE dishwasher, a Meile gas cook-top range, a Thermador convectionoven, warming drawer, and microwave.

CUSTOM CABINETRY THROUGHOUTThe custom cabinetry built byRandall’s Woodworks includes severalpull-out drawers. A pull-out cabinetdrawer was installed for garbage, andabove the stovetop the cabinetryincludes all platter space with an extra48 inches of all extra shelving space.“Overall, our kitchen became muchmore efficient and it makes muchmore practical use of space,” Janetsaid. The cabinetry also includes aconvenient three-level Lazy Susan, which Janet stores her spices andother kitchen necessities.

Another request that Janet had was towiden the door to the entrance of thekitchen and boost the height by severalinches. “This gives it much more openspace and allows for a much more openfeel to the entire room.” The remodeledkitchen also includes a desk niche witha combination computer/TV area.

NJT Construction also paid closeattention to match up the new hard-wood flooring in the den and masterbedroom with existing hardwood floor-ing in the living room, dining room, andkitchen. “They did an excellent job.”

The laundry room includes a stack-able washer and dryer, and NJTConstruction built in a broom closet forextra storage. “I also love the dry bararea and the ice maker that theyinstalled.” New light fixtures andrecessed lighting complete the kitchenwith an elegant look.

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTSOne thing that Janet said that made theproject go so smoothly was that she andStony were able to make quick deci-sions about what they wanted and NTJConstruction was very accommodatingto their needs. “Roger was very easy towork with and he really listened to whatwe wanted,” she said.

NJT Construction did a fantastic job,”Janet said. “They exceeded our expec-tations and we highly recommend them. They did a phenomenal job on our newkitchen; they were great to work with.We couldn’t be happier with the resultsand we are very pleased with the newkitchen.”

When Sandy Miller and her hus-band John inherited her lateaunt’s 1950s home in Vestavia

Hills, AL, they decided to remodel thehome and make it their primary resi-dence. At that time, they lived in anarea townhome, which provided themthe perfect opportunity to remodel thehouse before moving. “The house waspretty much stripped and redone,”Sandy said.

The existing three-bedroom, one-and one-half bathroom house neededto be updated and enlarged with theaddition of a master suite. A completekitchen renovation was also a high priority for Sandy.

FINDING THE RIGHT REMODELERSandy started looking around for anarea remodeling company to take on theproject. Precision Homecrafters, inBirmingham, AL, is a client of heremployer. Several of her co-workersknew of the company’s work for remod-eling projects and the various awardsthat they had won. “We looked intoPrecision Homecrafters, their reputa-tion, and past projects—so we decidedto use them for our remodeling project,”Sandy said.

Sandy met with George Williams,Owner of Precision Homecrafters, andtheir architect to begin the design-buildprocess. They listened to what shewanted in a kitchen. Sandy said thatthe primary objectives for the kitchenarea were to provide space for familygatherings during holidays and to serve

as a focal point for daily living. “Thearchitect put together some preliminarysketches, and I just loved them.Everything just kind of evolved fromthere,” she said.

GETTING STARTEDAccording to George Williams, the origi-nal kitchen was small and housed thewasher and dryer. In the existing layout,an adjacent small bedroom was used asa den.

“The first thing we did was enlargethe footprint of the kitchen with a smallcorner addition, removing the wallbetween the kitchen and original bed-room and removing part of the wallbetween the kitchen and living room. This wall served as structural support, which received kitchen cabinets on oneside and bookshelves on the living roomside,” George said. “This helped themenlarge the area and provided for muchmore space.”

STAYING WITHIN BUDGETCareful consideration was made whenselecting cabinets. The Millers had abudget for the project, and Sandy saidit was important to them to stay withinbudget. “I knew what color cabinets Iwanted, and it was also important to methat pull-out drawers were included,”Sandy said. They looked at differentdoor styles and stain color. They ulti-mately decided on custom-made cabi-nets. Some wall cabinets includedglass, which Sandy uses to display hercollectible dishes.

A KITCHEN TRANSFORMEDThis kitchen was recently gutted and remodeled in this 1950s-built home, as part of a whole-houseremodel. Granite countertops and hardwood floorsare used throughout.

Granite countertops are usedthroughout the kitchen. Sandy pickedout stainless steel Kenmore appliancesand a KitchenAid refrigerator. Lightingincludes recessed lights throughoutthe room, pendant lights above theisland and under-cabinet lights. “Itturned out great; it’s so pretty with thelights on at night.”

The existing linoleum flooring wasreplaced with hardwood floors. “Thefloors are beautiful; they did an excel-lent job at matching up the new stainwith the rest of the flooring throughoutthe house, which was all refinished. They flow nicely from room to room,”Sandy said.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS USED THROUGHOUTAccording to George, in order to make

the plan work, a small addition to anexisting bump out was required. Acenter support wall serves as a backfor bookshelves in the living room andjut-out cabinets in the kitchen. A largepassageway on each end of the wallfrom the kitchen to the living roomcreates an open feeling and allowstraffic to flow from one area to theother.

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTSThe finished project transformed thesmall dated kitchen/laundry room com-bination with built-in plywood cabinetsinto a spacious kitchen that accommo-dates a large dining table, a largeisland, and plenty of cabinet space.Precision Homecrafters also added aFrench Door leading from the kitchen

to the rear patio. Hardwood floors flowthroughout the house. Stainless steelappliances complement the cabinetsand granite countertops. This beautifulkitchen truly is “the heart of thehome” and a wonderful place to gatherwith family.

Sandy and John now live in theremodeled home. They sold theirtownhouse and love their new home.“I recommend Precision Homecraftersto anyone doing a remodeling project;they do excellent work.”

David and Terri DeSantis have livedin their 1996-built, 7,200-square-foot, five-bedroom, five- and one-

half bathroom home for the past sevenyears with their two young daughters.

Several years ago they built a beauti-ful in-ground pool in their backyard withaccess from the lower level. After usingthe new outdoor area for a couple ofyears, they began to notice somechanges that they wanted to makethroughout the indoor and outdoor areasof their home.

“We loved using the pool, but therewasn’t easy access to it—and byadding an additional kitchen area rightoutside of the pool area, it would bemuch easier to entertain,” Terri said.“And, I always wanted a Butler’spantry. Additionally, I was sick andtired of carrying the wet towels fromthe pool up to the main level to thelaundry room and the existing laundryroom was a bit small."

FINDING THE RIGHT REMODELERAfter talking about their desires, theydecided it was time to find a localremodeler to start coming up with theplans. They began talking with arearemodelers and received a referral fordesign/build firm Oak Alley, Inc. from aformer neighbor, Kale Frames, owner ofCabinet Trends in Birmingham. Kale and

Lynne McWhorter, cabinet designer, hav-ing worked together with Oak Alley astrade partners on this and several otherjobs over the years, had nothing but nicethings to say about the company.

“We made an appointment with OakAlley and also looked into other com-panies as well,” Terri said. “We inter-viewed Oak Alley; we really liked themand decided to move forward with theremodeling project.” Ultimately, theydecided to add a kitchen area to thelower level, move their existing main-floor laundry room to the lower level, convert the existing laundry area intoa butler’s pantry, add a pergola overthe upper-level terrace, and a spiralstaircase to have better access to theirpool area.

RECONFIGURING THE PANTRY AREAOak Alley employees met with theDeSantis’ and started to go over plans with them. According to theDeSantis’, the pantry, though central-ly located, was way too small.Additionally, the existing laundry areatook too much valuable space awayfrom the kitchen.

Oak Alley’s Owner Mike McKay cameup with an elegant solution, whichmoved the laundry out of the way to cre-ate a large walk-in pantry. “We firstdecided to move the laundry room to a

more convenient place on the lowerlevel,” Mike said. “Then we had a spacefor the new pantry. We removed the oldlaundry sink and cabinets and installednew, more attractive shelving, giving theDeSantis’ plenty of room to store alltheir needed supplies.”

The small space left vacant by theprevious pantry was turned into a con-venient new Butler’s pantry. Oak Alleyoutfitted the area with decorative cabi-netry, granite countertops, a uniquevessel bar sink, and a new under-thecounter beverage refrigerator.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS INCORPORATED THROUGHOUTAccording to Terri, the small, vacatedpantry space needed more light and alittle more elbow room for it to functionas a Butler’s pantry. So Oak Alley addeda pass through with a serving shelf, solving both the lighting and spaceissues. “It turned out very well,” Mikesaid. “This handy pass through with aserving ledge brings light and conven-ience to this little gem of a spot.”

POOL ACCESS MADE MUCH EASIERThe homeowners had a nice pool area inthe backyard, but there was not enoughroom to add a pool house. And, accessto the backyard was through the lower-level walk-out basement. The homeown-

ers felt that the pool was too far fromthe living area.

“We wanted much better access tothe pool area,” Terri said. “We could seethe kids in the pool from the main level, but we had to go through the lower levelto get out there. And, we were con-stantly bringing the wet towels andswim wear through the house up to themain floor laundry.”

Oak Alley’s creative solution took theliving area to the pool. The home hada wonderful terrace on the main levelbut there was no way to access thelower level pool without going throughthe house. After careful considerationand many rendered images, circularwrought iron stairs were chosen as theright look and space-saving solution forthis area.

“We added a pergola and spiralstairs to the main floor terrace over-looking the pool for shade and moreconvenient access as well,” Mike said. Arbor Dreams, a product division of Oak Alley, was instrumental in mak-ing the perfect pergola and the endresult turned out well. Arbor Dreamsspecializes in elegant and stately composite arbors and pergolas thatcan accommodate ceiling fans, rain-proofing and screening systems, misting systems, and contain bothaudio and lighting components.

OUTDOOR/INDOOR UPSCALE REMODELOak Alley Inc. recently remodeled this home to include a beautiful indoor/outdoor kitchen area, with additional poolside access. A new butler’s pantry and new laundry room also add to the home’s efficiency.

24 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

“Arbor Dreams focuses exclusively oncreating custom-designed, low-mainte-nance outdoor living spaces that fami-lies and friends can enjoy for years. Ourmission is to build beautiful structuresthat will enhance homeowners’ qualityof life, and do so in a way and withmaterials that will grant you lastingpeace of mind,” Mike said.

KITCHEN ADDITIONAnother one of Terri and Oak Alley’ssolutions was to take a lower-level spare

bedroom and bath and use the space tocreate a summer kitchen, complete withlaundry facilities for towels and wetsuits, plus indoor and outdoor cookingand eating spaces.

New French doors replaced the olddouble windows. New cabinets byCabinet Trends, granite countertops, appliances, tile floor, and lighting trans-formed the space into a new focal pointfor living. They also replaced the tub inthe nearby bathroom with a rain showerand installed a furniture vanity. A large

grill and a gorgeous ceiling fan on thelower patio further enhance the indoor-outdoor living space.

LIVING THROUGH A REMODELAccording to Terri, living through theremodel wasn’t bad at all. “They did thework in shifts, which really made it mucheasier for our family,” she said. Forexample, Oak Alley kept the old laundryroom functional until the new one wasready to be used, she said. They keptspace for pantry items until the newButler’s pantry was completed too.

“In addition, they put plastic barriersup and did their best to keep the dustout of the rest of the house. We werevery happy working with them.Everything turned out great.”

RECOMMENDS REMODELERAccording to Mike, when the pool andbackyard are great, but the only access isthrough the basement, this is what to do!“Terri had great ideas, and we enjoyedworking with her to bring them to life. Insummary, we took a spare bedroom andbath and used the space to create a sum-mer kitchen, complete with laundry facil-ities, plus indoor and outdoor cookingand eating spaces. We added a hand-somely designed fiberglass pergola withsquare columns to enhance the appear-ance and comfort of the above terrace, and a spiral stair to connect these stun-ning outdoor spaces. Outdoor living takeson a new depth of meaning for the fami-ly with these handy facilities.”

“We were extremely happy with theresults and I recommend Oak Alley foranyone doing remodeling work,” Terrisaid. “It’s now much easier for us toentertain and we love it. They did agreat job making use of all of thespaces; we wouldn’t have done anythingdifferently. They do really great work.”
