Four years after Chanel had launched her own label, she was a success on both sides of the Atlantic.

And she had been features in all the important magazines.

Her signature easy elegance style was a hallmark of her clothes


Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883 in a poorhouse, in France.

Her parents placed her in an orphanage at an early age.

The influence of this orphanage was to dominate Chanel and her designs all her life.


After spending her youth living in austere measures and with strict discipline, Chanel left the orphanage.

She took with her not just her needlework skills, but more importantly a fiercedesire to be “Someone”

She would never allow herself to be looked down on again.


Chanel left the orphanage and went to work as a seamstress.

To supplement her small income she worked in the evenings in a local bar

Here she was famous for singing a popular song“Ko Ko Ri Co”

The audience christened her “Coco”

Here Coco Chanel was born.

Chanel met many influential people.

One of the first important Men in her life introduced her into High Society

Through his lifestyle Chanel discovered a love for outdoor pursuits, especially horse riding.

She loved the efficient, neat tailored look.

This was to become a main influence upon Chanel in her later work.


Chanel turned her attention to Millinery - Hat making.

Her hats were greatly admired by her new influential circle of friends.

Through this circle of friends she was introduced to the second important man to influence her.

Arthur BOY Capel


Boy Capel, financed Chanel to open a hat shop in Paris, On the Rue Cambon.

Boy Capel was a very wealthy English Industrialist, he was the Love of Chanel’s Life.

He encouraged Chanel to open a second boutique.


This boutique was located in the wealthy South of France in Biaritz.

Chanel responded to the beach inspired life by creating a looser softer style of clothing

using Jersey.This caused a revolution in fashion as Chanel had used a men’s Underwear fabric for women’s outerwear

It proved to be a huge success and was a definitive moment in the story of Chanel


Back in Paris Chanel moved into a second location on The Rue CambonNo.31.

Which remains the Head - offices of Chanel today.


Chanel suffered great heartbreak when Boy Capel was tragically killed in a car accident.

She took comfort in the third important male influence to come into her life.

Count Dimitry.


An impoverished Russian Emigree - He introduced Chanel to Russian style.

He also introduced Chanel to a ready made specialised workforcewho had elaborate and intricate hand embroidery skills.

A technique which Chanel used to great success in her signature evening-wear.


The next important influence in the Chanel story was the Duke of Westminister.

He befriended Chanel and introduced her to the final influence which would establish firmly her style

Always unlucky in love,

Chanel the woman looked backwards to her humble beginnings and found the strength to recognise that she would always be an outsider

She focussed on being someone not something.

In doing so became the Brand
