know how to build almost everything. They construct houses and other buildingsincluding the floors, walls and roofs.
They install the doors, windows and stairs.Give them some toolsand some wood, plastic or metal andwatch how quickly they can build something.
Carpenters look at drawingscalled blueprints
to show themhow to put buildings
or furnituretogether.
While many carpenters makenew buildings, some repairold buildings. Some addrooms or entire floors ofrooms to help make homes, schools or hospitals bigger.
Others have jobs in factorieswhere they build furniture likebookshelves, desks, tablesand chairs.
1
Some carpenters work at one place all the time. Others will work on oneproject until it is finished then go and work on another job somewhere else. You see carpenters working inside buildings or outside a building all year round.
Some carpenters work for construction companies. Others own their own businesses.
Theses are some of the tools that Carpenters use. Change the letters to find the tool names.
vrwecesirrdHint: This is one word made from two words. It’s a tool that you twist to push special nails into wood or metal.
mesepaertuaHint: This tool is two words. You use it before you cut a piece of wood.
dnawhsaHint: This is one word made from two words. It’s a tool with teeth but it doesn’t bite.
mahremHint: When you use this tool with nails, it’s very noisy.
rsuaqeHint: It looks like half a box and you use it to make sure every corner is perfect.

install the wires that bring electricity into housesand buildings. They joinwires together and connect them to lightswitches and wall outlets. Appliances like televisions, radios, refrigerators and toasters have cords on them that plug into these outlets.
When you push a button on a computeror flick a switch on ahair dryer, you let electricity travel on the wires. Then yourcomputer and hair dryerwill work. Electriciansgive us power to havelight in our houses atnight, power to cookour food and power tokeep our houses warmin the winter.
can be very dangerous. That is whyelectricians are trainedto work very carefullywith electricity. Theyread drawings calledblueprints that showthem where wires in abuilding must go andhow these wires are connected.
know how to install fire alarms, furnaces and
air conditioners. They can also
replace old wiring and can add more
wire so your house can have more
electricity.
3
Some electricians own their own businesses or they might work for large companies. Some go from job to job and install wiring, electrical outlets and light switches in new houses and large buildings. Other electricians always work in the same building, apartment block or shopping centre. In big buildings, there are always lots of electrical outlets and wires to fix and there are always lots of burned out light bulbs to change.
4
Some welders join bigsteel beams together thatform the walls and floorsof new buildings. Somefix cars and big trucks thathave been in accidents.
cut pipe for plumbing or weld bigpipes together. These pipepieces must fit togetherperfectly because many of them are used to carry water or gas. Water and gas pipelines are buried under the ground.
work with metal. They can bend it, make itstraight, make holes in itor join pieces of metaltogether.
Welders do this with torches. Hot gas shoots out of the end of these tools. The heat from the gas is so hot it will soften or make holes in the metal. When the hot gas touches a metal object, bright hotsparks of metal flyeverywhere.
must wear special clothing, shoes, gloves and masks so thesparks will not burn them.
5
Some welders work in a shop all the time where they fix things or make steel and metalproducts. Other welders might work outdoors at a job site. People who are plumbers, pipefitters, mechanics and machinists also need to know how to weld.
Welders are like dentists. Find what they do to metal.

can make water move in every direction - up, down and sideways. They connect the pipesthat bring water to, and take it away frombathtubs, showers, water fountains, sinks, dishwashers and toilets. We cannot see thesepipes because they areinstalled in our housesand buildings beforecarpenters add the
floors, walls and ceilings.
When a water pipe breaks, you need a plumber to fix it -fast! Plumbers have tofind the place where thewater is leaking out of thepipe. This is hard to do
because the pipeis hiddenbehind the
wall or underthe floor. Then
they fix the pipe with special glue or clamps. They might have to add a new section of pipe bywelding it to the old pipesthat are still in good condition.
When water won't go down adrain, you call aplumber to find outwhat is plugging thepipe. Sometimesplumbers pull strangethings like toys or socks out of a toilet or bathtub drain.
In the winter,if you do not
have heat in your house and if there is water in the pipes, the water could freeze andthe pipes could break. Then you have to call a plumber to come and
carefully warm the pipes to melt
the ice.
7
Plumbers work wherever pipes have to be connected or fixed - in old andnew homes or in buildings like hospitals and restaurants.
Some plumbers own their own companies. Other plumbers work with pipefitters who build and fix piping systems that carry water and fuel forheating and cooling.
In a house, a toilet,
sink and bathtub all have their
own pipes for water.
In this maze, find the right pipes that
connect to the bathroom.

make sure that machinery, vehiclesand equipmentwork properly. Some mechanics fix cars, vans, motorcycles, snowmobiles or trucks.
Other mechanics work on biggermachines like airplanes, farm tractors, snowplows or equipment in factories.
Because many
machines and new
cars and trucks have
computers in them and
a lot of electronic parts,
mechanics must know
how to use computers
to find computer
problems.
Many machines and vehicles have hundreds of parts.Mechanics mustknow what each partdoes and what to dowhen somethingsmells different, sounds different or does not work right.
9
Most mechanics work in repair shops or in service stations in every city and town in Manitoba. Mechanics who fix airplanes and big equipment like cranes sometimes work outside because these machines will not fit into a repair building.
Mechanics who repair machinery in companies like a furniture factory, dairy orpaper plant work indoors. They are always checking to make sure the equipmentworks properly. They don't wait until a machine is broken to fix it.
This is what a car repair shop looks like.
These two pictures are almost the same.
Picture #2 has some changes.
Circle 10 things that are different in Picture #2.
10
Machinists look at blueprints that showdrawings of what theyneed to make. Thenthey use specialmachines to do thework. They have to cut, shape and measure themetal very carefully tomake sure that whatthey make is exactlywhat is needed.
If a machine is broken, a machinist might have to take it apart, find thebroken part, make a new part, and then puteverything back together again.
can take a block of
hard metal and make it into any
shape. They mightmake metal into a part for an airplane
engine or for a special tool that aDoctor might need
to perform an operation.
11
Some machinists work in large factories. They make parts for machines that are usedto manufacture items like cars, toys, dishes and furniture.
Other machinists might work for a company that supplies a lot of special parts to otherbusinesses. These machinists might make special pieces for a space satellite. Thenthey might design a part that is used to produce the outside case of a CD player.
Here are five tools that a machinist uses to make parts formachines and equipment. So equipment works properly, parts must fit together perfectly like pieces in a puzzle.
See if you can find the shapes of thesemachining tools
in the puzzle.

are trained to cut andstyle hair for adultsand children. Theycan make hair curly orstraight and evenchange the colour. They can tell youwhat haircut and stylelooks best around theshape of your faceand how to makeyour hair look thickeror thinner.
Some hairstylists also trim and shapemen's beards andmoustaches.
At some hair salonsyou can have your fingernails and toenailscut and painted withnail polish. You caneven have pretty pictures and designs painted on your nails.
In some salons there are stylists whohave taken specialcourses and knowhow to apply makeupso people look theirbest for weddings orfor family pictures. They can also tell you how to care foryour skin.
13
Some hairstylists own their own businesses. Their salons might be in shopping centres orin their own homes. They might work for other stylists. Many hairstylists work every day ofthe week. Some may decide to work only in the evenings after supper or on weekends.
Hairstylists know what kind of haircut looks best on a certain face shape.
Here are some men's and ladies' faces. Draw a hairstyle around each face shape
and see which one looks best.

know how to carve animals orbirds from big blocksof ice. They might do this for weddingsand for special events. They mightalso design flower arrangements madefrom vegetables and fruit.
If you would like abirthday cake madethat looks like you, acook knows how todo it. They can makedesserts that look liketoys or anything you can imagine.
can make every kind offood. They could makeyou something new anddifferent to eat everyday.Cooks read recipes thattell them how to makesoups and salads, how to cook meat and vegetables and how tobake cakes and desserts.
Some cooks invent their own recipes.
Everyday cooks in a restaurant mightmake five or six different meals anddesserts. Then theywrite the names of thefood on a piece ofpaper called a menu. When you go to arestaurant for dinner, you would choose oneof these meals listedon the menu.
Cooks who work in hotelsand banquet rooms mayplan only one meal but itcould be for 400 peopleall eating at the sametime.
15
Cooks work wherever there are hungry people. You will always findcooks in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, or in big schools with cafeterias.Other cooks work for food companies and invent new recipes.
Some cooks even work on trains or ships. Some work in trailers so theycan feed people who work outdoors at building sites.
These two lists are names of foods that go together. Draw a line between the two foods that match.
Here’s a food riddle.
