MeasurandF: Mesurande D: MessgrePhysical quantity of a measurement. In otherwords, the measurand is the length or the angleas measured or to be measured.

Measured valueF : Valeur mesure D: MesswertAny measured value expresses the result of ameasurement. Therefore, this value is directlyassociated with the measurand and further allocated to the output feature (e.g. display) of a measuring instrument or device. A measured value is expressed as the product of both numerical value and unit. The measured value includes the true value plusthe random and systematic errors of the relevanttool.

Result of measurementF : Rsultat de mesure D : MessergebnisProduct of a measured value once corrected onthe basis of the known systematic errors. This result is further increased by the uncertaintyof measurement, which includes the random aswell as any unknown systematic error.

D: Grenzwerte fr Messabweichungen fr ein messtechnisches Merkmal MPE

Extreme values of the permissible error for ametrological characteristic of a given measur-ing equipment, according to specifications orstandards proper to the manufacturer or oth-ers.

    Maximum permissibleerrors G

F: Erreurs maximales tolres GD: Fehlergrenzen GThese errors are assimilated to the Permissible limits of a metrological characteristic MPL.Being related to both upper and lower highestdeviations of a measuring instrument, they areusually symmetrical in practical metrology and, therefore, stated as single value, without anysign.

Deviation span of indicationF : Champ derreur dindicationD : AbweichungsspanneThis deviation span matches the distance fromthe highest to the lowest point of a coordinate as shown on the relevant diagram. The valueobtained is either applicable to whole or the local measuring span or measuring range. All needed measurements are carried out in onedirection (without reversal of the measuringforce ) - i.e. with upward plunger movement for a dial gauge. For those needed to establish thewhole deviation span, they are performed in bothdirections (with reversal of the measuring force) -i.e. with upward and downward movement of the plunger for a dial gauge.

HysteresisF: Hystrsis D: (Messwert-) Umkehrspanne Hysteresis expresses the difference betweenvarious indications of a measuring instrument. This value is achieved trough measurements ofthe increasing/decreasing value of a samemeasurand, taken under the same conditions. Hysteresis, which is quantitatively stated asstandard deviation of value dispersion, can bedetermined anywhere within the measuringspan or range. Its amount can also be obtainedfrom the diagram of the deviation span in itswhole.

RepeatabilityF : Fidlit (rptabilit)D : WiederholprzisionAbility of a measuring instrument to repeat the results obtained from the same measurandsuccessively measured in the same direction, also under the same conditions.Repeatability, which delivers an important in for -mation for the assessment of the uncertainty ofmeasurement, is quantitatively expressed asstandard deviation of dispersion values.

Decision Rules for Proving Conformance or Non-Conformance with SpecificationsRelationship with the uncertainty of measurement ISO 14253-1, which is a part of Geometrical Product Specification GPS, provides Rules forestablishing the conformance or non-conformance with specifications. These rules are valid for Inspection by measurements of work pieces and measuring equipment. This ISO standard makes allowances for the uncertainty of measurement or more precisely forthe true uncertainty of any measurement whenever the conformance or non-conformance with a given specification must be proved. So, for a workpiece, the specification matches a preset tol-erance while being equal to the maximum permissible errors for a metrological characteristic(MPE) for a measuring instrument.Any given specification is a constant whereas the measurement uncertainty is a variable, which isaffected by many components. Therefore, the zone of the conformance or non-conformance zonedepends on the size of the effective expanded uncertainty U.

Rule for proving conformanceConformance is proved when the measurement result y is lying withinthe specification zone, reduced oneither side by the expanded uncer-tainty U. Consequently, workpieces ormeasuring instruments can beaccepted as far as their conformancewith the specification is proved by themanufacturer (supplier).

Rule for proving non-conformanceNon-conformance is proved when themeasurement result y is lying beyondthe specification zone, increased oneither side by the expanded uncer-tainty U. In a such case, the relevantmeasuring instruments can be rejectedif the purchaser (customer) gives evi-dence of its non-conformance.

Conformance or non-conform-ance can neither be provenThis often happens when the measure-ment result y associated with theexpanded uncertainty U includeseither of both LSL and USL specifica-tion limits. As a result, work pieces ormeasuring instruments can neither beautomati cally accepted nor rejected. For such dead end cases, it is advis-sable to follow the rule below. Repeat all measurements based on a reduced uncertainty, so that con form -an ce or non-conformance can clearlybe demonstrated. Usually, proceeding in this way benefit to theparty thats able to provide the neededproof. Come to a mutual agreement provid-ing the procedure to be applied if suchcases arise.

THE FAVOURITESCalipers are the most popular length measuring instruments used worldwide. Owing to their simple construction, ease of handling and quick operation, they are the favourites in dimensionalmeasurement. The wide variety of forms and shapes available with exclusive measuring facesmake them the universal hande-held tools. All calipers of the famous TESA, ETALON, INTERAPID and ROCH brand names are recogn ised fortheir superior quality the guarantee for precise measurement. The flawless guide of the slider onthe beam ensures silky-smooth operation while also preventing the measuring jaws from tilting. The choice of the material with exactly defined heat treatment as well as a robust design result infurther distinctive advantages such as wear and corrosion resistance. For quick and easy reading of your measured values a condition thats essential in the certaintyof any measurement we offer dial calipers for a comfortable reading or more sophisticated digital models for error-free reading besides regular vernier calipers.

    Max. PermissibleErrors

The max. permissible errors (G) areexpressed by the equation givenbelow, where the values should berounded down to two decimal frac-tions (0,01 mm). They apply in meas urement takenunder the same measuring force. For all other measurements, includ-ing those perform with use of thedepth foot, the values obtained hasto be increased by 20 m.Calipers with scale or vernier read-ing to 0,1 or 0,05 mm: G = (20 + l / 10 mm) m 50 mCalipers with analogue indication(scale or vernier reading to 0,02mm) or numerical indication :G = (22 + l / 50 mm) m

PRECISION MEASUREMENTPrecision measurement requires the use of micrometers. In 1848, the first measuringtool of this type was patented by the French inventor Jean Laurent Palmer as calibre vis et vernier circulaire (screw calliper with a circular vernier). Today, we continue tomake external micrometers with these typical features. The introduction of the micrometer to the mechanical world came about by the visit ofthe two american engineers Joseph R. Brown and Lucian Sharpe to the Paris Exhibitionin 1867. At that time, their attention was called to the Palmers invention, which greatlyinterested them. After some improvements of the Palmer design, the product was manu-factured on a large scale and marketed successfully by the two partners. The story repeated in the past as TESA SA decided to manufacture external micrometersmaking them the first products produced by the company.Yet no matter what you measure internal or external dimensions all TESA andETALON micrometers are world-class products in design and quality. With a very few exceptions (e.g. external micrometers for gear tooth measurements), ourmicrometers respect the Abbe principle, i.e. the comparators one (also read in theGeneral Information). Their spindle are ground on modern grinding machines and theprofile of the screw is accurately restored with negligible pitch deviations. Such manu-facturing conditions are the guarantee for very low measurement uncertainties. The micrometers of both TESA and ETALON premium brands are robust with ergonomicdesign. Besides external micrometers in standard or special versions, we also offer micrometerheads, depth micrometers, full micrometer sets as well as a wide number of accessoriesplus all what you need for your calibrations. Each model provides either an analogue ora digital indication according to the execution. The models with electrical measuring system also include an RS 232 digital interface.
