THE GHAN

This transcontinental adventure offers an exceptional view of Australia – over three unforgettable days. A journey on The Ghan is an incomparable way to travel to the two jewels of Australia’s Northern Territory – the Red Centre and the tropical Top End. No journey aboard The Ghan is complete without taking in both of these must-see destinations.

The Ghan’s timetable makes the most of the daylight hours to offer unsurpassed views of the passing landscape. Starting from the mellow landscape of the Top End with subtropical flora staking its claim over the passing scenery, Off Train Excursions in the northern town of Katherine offer you the opportunity to experience the inspiring wonders of Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge).

Each new day begins with a fresh panorama of the changing landscape. Red earth and cobalt blue skies – the essence of Central Australia takes on a character of its own with every passing hour. Leave the train in Alice Springs to view locations close to Australia’s heart. Take an Off Train Excursion and discover the region’s most fascinating sites.

Extend your Red Centre stay and explore the two iconic landsmarks, Uluru and Kings Canyoun, before boarding The Ghan again in Alice Springs.

The final leg of your rail journey takes you through South Australia. The majestic Flinders Ranges and the sweeping Adelaide Plains unfold before your eyes before you conclude your adventure in Adelaide.

Of course, you can always travel from Adelaide to Darwin – it’s just as impressive.

Rail JourneysINDIAN PACIFIC

The Indian Pacific offers travellers one of the most impressive and indulgent ways to explore the vastness of Australia – from Sydney to Perth. A four day journey between the two oceans, which inspired its name. From Sydney, the journey begins through the Blue Mountains to outback Broken Hill before skirting the Flinders Ranges and Spencer Gulf on its way into Adelaide. The Indian Pacific then embarks across the awe-inspiring Nullarbor Plain before winding through the Avon Valley and into Perth. There are also plenty of opportunities to stretch the legs and discover some of the unique and wonderful cities and townships along the route, with scheduled stops in the renowned mining towns of Broken Hill and Kalgoorlie, South Australia’s capital city of Adelaide and the remote outpost of Cook in the middle of the Australian outback, complete with a population of four. Explore at your own pace or take one of the optional Off Train Excursions.

THE OVERLAND

There’s no better way to enjoy the trip between Melbourne and Adelaide than on The Overland. The Overland provides a comfortable, relaxing journey between the cities. Throughout this interstate journey, guests can soak up a diverse range of landscapes from rugged Mallee scrubland, to fields of golden crops, over vast open plains and through gentle rolling hills. The Overland passes through classic Australian country towns including Murray Bridge, Bordertown, Nhill, Dimboola, Horsham, Ararat and Geelong. Whichever direction you travel, the journey is a wonderful opportunity to relax in comfort, mingle with fellow travellers and delight in the ever-changing countryside along the way. A great way to extend your journey – linking with The Ghan and Indian Pacific from Adelaide, The Overland is your gateway to an exciting Australian rail experience.

Day 5: King George River and Falls Visit King George River where the Zodiacs will take you through the spectacular canyon walls to view the King George Falls. For the more adventurous, there is an opportunity to hike to the top, where you can enjoy a cool refreshing swim in one of the fresh water rock pools.

Day 6: Vansittart Bay Land at Vansittart Bay and view Gwion Gwion art and view the nearby wreck of a DC3 aircraft that crashed here during WWII.

Day 7: Hunter River and Mitchell Falls Drop anchor near Naturalist Island where the Zodiacs will take you to main beach for your optional helicopter excursion to Mitchell Falls and Plateau. The Hunter River offers spectacular scenery, lined with cool rainforest and soaring red cliffs.

Day 8: Montgomery Reef At the turn of the tide, experience Montgomery Reef. If the conditions permit, you may see the tide rapidly drop away, creating a raging torrent of water which pours off the top of this 400 square kilometre reef.

Day 9: Talbot Bay, Horizontal Falls The Horizontal Waterfalls are created by the rapid tidal fall on the ocean side of the cliffs of the Buccaneer Archipelago. A “waterfall” may result, as the trapped landward water cascades out through the gap to the ocean side. Experience this exhilarating adventure aboard a Zodiac.

Day 10: Nares Point and Crocodile Creek Today visit Nares Point, a geological finger of sandstone on a Zodiac safari and guided beach walk. Visit Crocodile Creek which defies its name by providing a freshwater safe swimming place.

Day 11: Broome Arrive Broome and disembark.

10 Night Kimberley ExpeditionNational Geographic Orion’s 10 night Kimberley Expedition cruise undertakes an in-depth exploration of this remote coastline, one way from Darwin to Broome. This voyage also operates in reverse. Nothing can fully prepare you for the dramatic contrasts of Australia’s north-west, rich in Aboriginal culture and galleries of ancient artwork.

You will discover parts of the planet that remain accessible only to a select band of travellers, an enterprising few who prefer their journey to be one of discovery and enrichment. A small fleet of Zodiacs will take you to remote islands and beaches and provide access to explore rugged gorges, inlets and waterfalls all combining for an experience you simply can’t have by travelling overland. ITINERARY:

Day 1: Darwin Embark in Darwin and relax in your new surroundings as you head to sea.

Day 2: Com, East Timor Arrive in Com, East Timor where National Geographic Orion will clear Customs and Immigration, giving you the opportunity to go ashore.

Day 3: At Sea A day at leisure at sea. Enjoy the on board experience that Orion offers, perhaps by booking a spa treatment.

Day 4: Wyndham Arrive into Wyndham and take to the air to view the unique Bungle Bungle Range, the beehive formations which The Kimberley is famous for. If you’d prefer, enjoy the Ord River Cruise on Lake Argyle which includes a visit to the historic Durack Homestead.

2015 DEPARTURES:From Broome to DarwinSilver Discoverer:• Apr 9, 29• May 19

From Darwin to BroomeSilver Discoverer:• Apr 19• May 9

Experiences listed are subject to tides and may change without notice. Passports are required.

Day 8: Wyndham Wyndham is the gateway to the Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park. For more than 350 million years, nature has shaped geological formations of giant orange and black striped domes rising out of the ground, a landscape unlike anything you have ever seen. Today take part in an included flight for an aerial view of these glorious panoramas, as well as seeing the majestic, man-made Lake Argyle and Argyle Diamond Mine.

Day 9: Day at sea A leisurely day at sea to exchange notes with fellow travellers and take advantage of the luxurious amenities aboard Silver Discoverer. Attend a lecture, perhaps about the Indonesia craft of Ikat weaving or the Dreamtime mythology of the Aborigines or just relax in the comfort of your suite.

Day 10: Leti Island, Indonesia The islands of Southern Maluku long managed to escape unwelcome attention from the outside world. No spices were grown here, so the only trade was largely limited to marine products. The three islands of Leti, Moa and Lakor have approximately 20,000 inhabitants and one of the few matrilineal cultures in Indonesia. After the Silver Discoverer has been cleared into Indonesia you will have time for a short, expeditionary visit to the island before departing back to Australia.

Day 11: Darwin Following breakfast, disembark Silver Discoverer in Darwin.

10 Night The Kimberley Hidden Treasures Cruise For adventure of a truly epic spirit, The Kimberley has few equals. Largely inaccessible and protected by its very remoteness, The Kimberley offers landscapes etched with ancient human history. Under endless blue skies, gaze upon thundering waterfalls and soaring cliffs. Marvel at the majestic waterfalls or search for raptors in vast wetlands while the world’s largest crocodile lurks just beneath the surface. Sweeping views are abundant in every corner of The Kimberley.

ITINERARY:

Day 1: Broome This afternoon, you will be introduced to your Expedition Team and attend a Zodiac briefing, and meet some of your fellow travellers while enjoying the first of many memorable meals in The Restaurant.

Day 2-7: Talbot Bay, Montgomery Reef, King George River and Falls The Kimberley is famous for having the second largest tidal range in the world. A flexible itinerary allows you to take advantage of this natural phenomenon. In the true spirit of expedition cruising, each day the Expedition Leader and Captain will determine the best course depending on tide, weather and sea conditions. Spend time exploring this wondrous region and possibly visit Talbot Bay, Montgomery Reef, Raft Point, Hunter River, King George River and Falls.
