TERRIERS AND DACHSUNDS
Terriers and dachshunds actually belong to two separate FCI groups. Although they each have their own
classification, some argue that the digging nature inherent to Dachshunds should place them in the
terrier group.
The standard size dachshund was bred to scent, chase and flush out badgers and other animals
living burrows, whereas the miniature dachshund was developed to scent out rabbits.
The word terrier derives from the Middle French la terre, from the Latin terra meaning earth. So its
current wording basically has the meaning of ‘burrower’.
The breed, like so many others, is now primarily bred as a pet, but the terrier has a rich history. In the 18th century the animal’s willingness to fight was exploited
in blood sports; later in the 19th Century it was crossed with older purpose-bred dogs for dog shows.
Nowadays terriers like to pretend to be James Bond and embark on epic
adventure holidays. Well, this Welsh Terrier does anyway. Head on to the
next level to learn your different terrier and dachshund breeds!*
