Prologue

In what used to be North America is now Panem comprised of one main city called Capitol and 12 Districts sur-rounding it. After the Great War was over, Capitol took control of the land and created the dreaded Hun-ger Games. Each year, a boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 17 are ran-domly selected from each district in a process known as the reapings. The Hunger Games take place in an arena over lorded by the game makers who force the 24 tributes to fight to the death. Being mighty and unstoppable, the game makers can influence the game in whichever way they please.

Character bioKatniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl who lives with her Mom and younger sister Primrose. She is great at hunting and usually provides food for the family, until her little sister Prim gets picked for the 74th annual hun-ger games. She volunteers in her sister’s place as the girl tribute for district 12 to go and fight in the hunger games to the death with the 23 other tributes.

interview

Question 1: In district 12 during the reapings where you get picked to go to the hunger games, after Prim was picked you volun-teered in her place. What were your motivations for that? Answer 1: Right before the reap-ings I told my little sister Prim that she would not get picked, because she had her name in the draw only once out of thousands. When I heard her name get picked I could not bear to see my

little sister go to such a horrible thing so instead I took her place. Question 2: During the re-cent interviews Peeta Mel-lark, the other tribute from district 12 admitted to be-ing in love with you. How do you feel about that? Answer 2: At first when he said it during his interview I tried to keep my face away from all cam-eras because I was embarrassed because of what he had said on live tv. Then by instinct after we were not being shown I became angry and actually shoved him when he was getting out of his car. But truthfully I think I am in love with Peeta especially after they announced if two tributes from the same district were the last 2 standing, they would both survive. Question 3: District 12 is not a very nice place, what are the differences between district 12 and Capitol? Also how have you adapted to this change.

Answer 3: In district 12 I live in a place we call the seam, it was a very dirty and grungy place, even on the train to Capitol the food and everything on the train are very clean and well organized. Ever since I have been in Capitol and even where I stayed there is a variety of things I haven’t seen, so why not try it all? I wake up to clothes on my bed and breakfast hat and ready to eat, but I try to stuff my face as much as I can be-cause I might not have been able to eat again. Question 4: After being in Capitol for awhile, how does life compare here to District 12 and being with your family? Answer 4: Well life in Capitol is a lot neater and you get more well fed, but I very much miss my family and think of little Prim all the time. Although during the games I met another tribute from district 11 named Rue, we made an alliance, she was so little and sweet, she reminded me so much of prim, but when I went to get rid of the other tributes food, one

of the Career tributes from district one got her. Question: 5 After the announcer said that if you and your fellow tribute were the last 2 you would both win. What were your initial thoughts? Answer 5: Instantly I thought about Peeta, and I shouted out his name. I thought I was so stupid because what if one of the career tributes had heard me and hunted me down. Then I thought that maybe it was because of Peeta’s interview that they changed the rule so the “lover tributes” could win and be together.

I remember tears streaming down your faceWhen I said, I’ll never let you goWhen all those shadows almost killed your lightI remember you said, Don’t leave me here aloneBut all that’s dead and gone and passed tonight

Just close your eyesThe sun is going downYou’ll be alrightNo one can hurt you nowCome morning lightYou and I’ll be safe and sound

Don’t you dare look out your window darlingEverything’s on fireThe war outside our door keeps raging onHold onto this lullabyEven when the music’s gone

Just close your eyesThe sun is going downYou’ll be alrightNo one can hurt you nowCome morning lightYou and I’ll be safe and sound

Just close your eyesYou’ll be alrightCome morning light,You and I’ll be safe and sound...

I first looked at this song because it was actually written for the Hunger Games movie that is coming out in March this year. So as I looked into the song, I listened to it a couple times and then went and found the lyrics on-line. I tried to relate it to the book in many possible ways. There are a lot of scenes in the book that could relate to the song but I think the main one is where Katniss and Peeta are in the cave together and she is caring for him. This relates because it says “When all those shadows almost killed your light” in the song and in the book Peeta was captured by the career tributes and used to help find Katniss but Peeta ran away and the career tributes almost killed him. Then when it says “You’ll be alright No one can hurt you now” it relates to the part where Peeta and Katniss are in the cave and She is caring for Peeta.

Hyperbole: Darling, every thing’s on fireIdiom: I’ll never let you goPersonification: The war outside our door keeps raging on

Song analysis

I think that the theme of this song is that there are bad things happening around you, but there is always somebody that is there to protect you, make everything Safe and Sound. A line in the song is “When all those shadows almost killed your light” it’s saying that something bad has happened to you and then it states “You’ll be alright No one can hurt you now” it is say-ing that even though you have been through a rough time, there is someone to take care of you and make everything alright.

I think that these poetic devices in the song help to create a mental image of what is happening, because each one is descriptive or over exaggerated. This helps create the mental image because it forces you to think bigger, or to think outside the box. Instead if there were no figurative language the song would just be a plain boring song that doesn’t tell the listener or reader anything. I think the songwriter chose to do this because she wanted everyone to know what is happening in the short phrases she used. I think she got her point across in a very short time.

Where I’ve Been

I am from impoverished District 12, The pitch-black coal

I am from the endless claustraphobic depths of the soot filled mines I am from the

underlit mines, the chirp of the messenger of death To the dust strewn twisted streets of the SeamI am from nature’s sustaining environment, keeping my family alive

I am from equable and delighted, at peace with everything around me, the rustling of the leaves, the flowing of a river, and the smell of sap, I am from when Prim was picked, I became outraged, and brave, defending my family like a mother bear would, I had to protect Prim from the heartless hands of the Capitol I am from the nerve-racking tension and fear of the

reapings, To the games, and back hardly escaping the brittle hands of death, I am from the warm heart of Gale, The oven

at home that always kept us warmI am from Prim’s goat, and her cat always trying to escapeI am from hunting, and

trapping, to selling in the marketFrom having no father, and mother trying to leaveI am from drunken

Haymitch, to nicely dressed Effie trinke and President snow

I am Katniss Everdeen the girl on fire, the warm feeling, on fire, hand in hand with Peeta

The first hunger games book was released in 2006 and there were only 50,000 cop-ies sold, however, by 2010 there were over 800,000 copies sold throughout the world and this literary sensation was sold in 26 different languages with the rights sold in 38 territories. Currently, there are over 2.9 million copies in print. The question now is what in this world renowned novel made it so outstanding? Firstly the characters in this book directly align with the age group of the eighth grade, so they are easy for most eighth grades to relate to. This novel overflows with intense, griping action, keeping the readers intrigued and involved in the story right to the bitter end. This novel contains descriptive language that conveys the sophistication of the novel. This novel’s surging popularity is hard not to respond to, many tweens already have read the book and enjoy the story. By making this novel a core element of the eight-grade curriculum, it will keep kids engaged in reading and to ensure enjoyment throughout the project and a good mark for all.

Should the hunger games stay in the grade 8 curriculum? By: Terran Fong

This book is full or action, from the very beginning to the very end. I think the ac-tion in this novel make it outstanding, because I was always wanting to read more or never put the book down just to see what happened next. Normally I am not a book reader but because of the non-stop action I kept reading on. I think the action will get the reader indulged in the book as well as to keep them thinking. The main event of this book is where all the action is at, to show power Capitol picks 2 tributes from each district (there are 12) and it is a fight for survival, I noticed that at the end of each chapter there is always some sort of cliff hanger that adds to the action or the suspense, for example in chapter 18 or part two when Claudius Templesmith tells them that there can be 2 winners if the tributes are from the same district, it changes the tone of the book because now all of a sudden Katniss needs to go find Peeta, and win the game together.

Another reason why I really enjoyed this book is because the characters are easily relatable to. I think that this will help the eighth graders and other readers to under-stand the book better because they can relate the characters to their life as well as put themselves in the place of the character. I think that they can relate because we are in the approximate age group as some of the characters in the book. So if we are able to relate then the book will be much easier to understand, and make the reading experi-ence of this novel much better.

Finally a great reason to read this book is for the descriptive language, the language in this book helps develop the book more so you can get a feel for where the charac-ters are, and you can imagine what the place looks like. For example when Katniss and Peeta are on the train to Capitol, because they are from such a dirty district they describe the neatness and the buildings with such rich language. When the fashion people meet with Katniss and Peeta, they use a simile to describe how they look and act “You’ve got about as much charm as a dead slug.” Also when they are designing the outfits for them, they use a sort of humor and show the characters emotion. “And what do we do with coal? We burn it,’ says Cinna. ‘You’re not afraid of fire, are you, Katniss?’ He sees my expression and grins.”

Page 11: Terran Magazine

In conclusion I think that this book should stay in the grade 8 curriculum, it has outstanding language, intense action, and we are able to relate to it easily. All of these elements help make a great book because we can relate and the language helps us un-derstand and creates images. And the action keeps the reader wanting to read more. Overall I thought this book was amazing.
