33rd Annual BC Elders’ Gathering - Report

The Nisga’a Nation had hosted this year’s 33rd Annual BC Elders Gathering in Terrace at the

Terrace Sportsplex through a four-day agenda of events from July 12-15, 2009. The arena

was filled to capacity with First Nations from across BC with the Nisga’a Nation elders as

host from the Terrace Nisga’a Society and the four Nisga’a villages - Gingolx, Laxgalts’ap,

Gitwinksihlkw and New Aiyansh.

The King and Queen of this year’s BC Elders Gathering were New Aiyansh residents Melvin

& Rosie Robinson - Sim’oogit Gook gans Sigidimnak Yool’ , who were chosen at last year’s

gathering in Prince Rupert.

Within the four days, there were many activities for the elders to enjoy, one of which was the

Grand Entry that introduced each First Nation group. There was community profiles done

by each of the four Nisga’a villages as well as the three Nisga’a Urban Societies. To begin

each day, there was a convocation that included an opening prayer. There was also Health

workshops including: Diabetes & Heart Disease; Injury & Prevention; Suicide Prevention;

Youth Detox program and Wills & Estates presentation. Finishing each night’s festivities was

a closing prayer. There was a reconnection with old friends and the making of new ones for

our elders of BC. It was amazing to see the respect and unity of all Nations. It was very nice

to see them reminiscing with smiles and laughter while at the same time proudly representing

their First Nation group and a First Nation as a whole.

Keeping the culture alive within the gathering, the Nisga’a Nation had added extra activities

which included: a Nisga’a Traditional & Cultural presentation; Welcome Banquet

(outstanding feast filled with a tremendous amount of gifts that were given out to each

elder); Talent Night; and a wide variety of Cultural Dancing from each of the four Nisga’a

villages and three urban locals.

It was a very moving experience for all who attended and observed. Thank you to ALL who

assisted in making this happen. It took many hours of preparation and coordinating. This

shows that it could be done with a strong team and good leadership. Excellent Work!

This year’s theme was “Sayt K’ilim Goot”

which means,

“One heart, One path, One nation”

We had a tremendous amount of help from our Staff w/ their spouses: Phyllis;

Barb; Marlene; Karen; Diana & Douglas; Bonnie & Art; Julie & Esmond; Sarah

& Ken Jr.; and Lynn & Daniel. We had amazing donations from Ethel Nyce

who gave a huge amount of cultural food that we used for the door prizes. We

also had “fresh” salmon that was caught, delivered and donated specifically

for the BBQ by Maurice Squires. Thank you to both of you for all your hard

work and dedication to our membership. We appreciate your time you took to

do this for us - Thank you!

We would like to acknowledge our membership for your time that you took
