DESCRIPTION

Teroforma is a new tableware company, launching in January, bringing artists, craftsmen and designers together to create exclusively-designed tableware that means more. Believing that an object is just an object until one knows the story behind it and about the people involved in its creation, educating their customers on the creative process behind the products they are acquiring is of utmost importance to the multi-faceted start-up. Teroforma's creative director, Hugo Eccles, took some time out with Behance to discuss the company's motivations, inspirations and sometimes non-conventional practices.

We are a husband and wife who have brought together a new generation of designers and some of

the world’s finest artisan-manufacturers to make thoughtfully designed objects for the table. Over

the course of 18 months, we visited countless studios and workshops throughout Europe, Asia and

the US. Some visits were hilarious mistakes, others were unexpected triumphs. We met amazing

people, experienced incredible things together and had a lot of fun doing it.

When it came time for us to pair the designers and artisans we had met to create the elements

of the Teroforma range, we couldn’t help but notice that something interesting was happening.

Through all the apparent differences of nationality and language and culture, and despite the

sometimes vast gaps in distance and even age, the things that struck us were actually the amazing

similarities among the people we had met.

We have come to think of Teroforma as a place where people can gather together, be who they are,

pursue the things they believe in and create the things they can imagine. Telling the story of that

creative process and the people involved is more than just a firm commitment to ethical practices

and fair trade. It’s about giving credit where it’s due and offering our customers a chance to look

beyond the object to appreciate the process.

Our collaborations to date with 22 artisans and designers in 14 different countries have taught us

that the most worthwhile things can come from the most unexpected places. And that with an open

mind, the world can be an inspiring place.

You just have to sit at the right table.

Some drinks need no diluting. Our Whisky Stones are made for us

in Perkinsville, Vermont, and when properly chilled, are a perfect

addition to your next single malt. They cool things down just a

touch without daring to come between you and the dram of your

dreams. Simply rinse after use and store in the freezer.

Thea Mehl NorwayDesigner

Kvetna Glassworks Czech RepublicManufacturer

Andrew Hellman USADesigner

Vermont Soapstone USAManufacturer

What happens when you introduce a 29 year old Norwegian designer to a 58 year old Czech master glassblower? A perfect mix of

craft and tradition. Playfully mixing positive and negative space in complementary shapes, designer Thea Mehl worked alongside

master blower Antonín Toman to connect her sense of imagination to his sense of craftsmanship. The results feel distinctive, yet

somehow familiar. Made entirely by hand from non-lead crystal, the Avva tumblers are dishwasher safe.

Prince Alois von Lichtenstein was not satisfied simply founding a country. He also founded Kvetna Glassworks in 1794, where they have been making fine handmade crystal ever since. Nestled at the base of Javorina Mountain on the Czech-Slovak border, Kvetna’s reputation took root at the height of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The empire is gone, but the tradition remains.

Father? Architect. Mother? Interior designer. The fact that Thea was born to be a designer is evident in the subtle confidence of her work. In designing for Teroforma, she welcomed the chance to collaborate with Kvetna and to add her very distinctive sense of fun and individual expression to Avva. “I would rather challenge than overturn,” she says. We’re not arguing.

Wisely, Andrew does not take credit for designing a stone cube. Rather, it was his idea that we transplant an age-old concept from Scandinavia—where they have been making and using whisky stones for years—and have it made in the US, taking advantage of locally sourced materials and local craftsmanship. All in the name of slightly chilled whisky, just the way he likes it.

Over 150 years ago, a Vermont farmer unearthed a sizable chunk of soapstone while tilling his field. Noticing the unique flexibility and thermal properties of the material, Vermont Soapstone was born. Still mined and milled locally under the watchful eye of owner Glenn Bowman, Vermont Soapstone was the perfect choice to make our Whisky Stones.

Ekke & Oyyo TumblersMouthblown Non-lead Crystal

Designer Jan Knotek (Czech Republic) collaborated with the craftsmen at Kvetna Glassworks (Czech Republic) to create the straight-

edged Ekke tumblers and the ovoid Oyyo tumblers. Combining simple, elegant lines with sophisticated colors, each non-lead crystal

tumbler is mouthblown and hand-finished. Shape and color find resonance with other elements of the Teroforma product range.

All pieces are dishwasher safe.

Jan Knotek Czech RepublicDesigner

Kvetna Glassworks Czech RepublicManufacturer

Jan Knotek is a straightforward kind of guy. His design philosophy focuses on simplicity and practicality, traits immediately apparent in the tumblers that he created to complement our unique Oyyo series as well as our Ekke carafe and tumblers. Jan has exhibited his work at both Frankfurt’s Ambiente and Milan’s Macef design shows.

Ekke Carafe & TumblersMouthblown Non-lead Crystal

Roman Vrtiska Czech RepublicDesigner

Kvetna Glassworks Czech RepublicManufacturer

Living in Prague, a city where funky juice bars stand next to

gothic cathedrals, designer Roman Vrtiska knows a thing or

two about the combination of old and new. The Ekke Carafe &

Tumbler is a modern reinterpretation of a classic design from the

vaults at Kvetna Glassworks. Each of the two mouthblown, non-

lead crystal pieces are designed to fit together: cap becomes

cup becomes cap. Incidentally, we made sure to design the Ekke

Small Tumbler (page 5) with the carafe in mind—it fits just as

well as the one you see here. Perfect for bedside or tableside.

Both pieces prefer a quick rinse by hand.

Roman Vrtiska is as young and raw as he is mature and experienced. Calling on a sensitivity to juxtaposition informed by the dynamics of his hometown of Prague, Roman redesigned a vintage 1873 carafe produced by Kvetna Glassworks, finding new definitions for the traditional shape and considering the role of an object when it’s not in use.

Stems, Flutes & DecantersMouthblown Non-lead Crystal

Tihomir Tomic CroatiaDesigner

Rogaska Glassworks SloveniaManufacturer

Our series of wines stems and champagne flutes focuses on simplicity and quality craftsmanship, delivering glasses which are

perfectly suited for complex (R1), balanced (R2) or bold (R3) reds; whites with lower acidity (W1) or higher acidity (W2); those who

wish to accentuate the dry (C1) or sweet (C2) character of champagne. The decanter is designed to aerate wine without the need

for a funnel. The glasses feature a single-pull stem and are dishwasher safe. The decanter is best cared for by hand.

Rogaska Glassworks is located in Rogaska-Slatina, a spa town known for the healing qualities of its natural hot springs. One of the finest producers of crystal in the world, this Slovenian workshop was established over 350 years ago and has collaborated with generations of Europe’s most-skilled glassblowers and cutters, continually redefining innovation and tradition.

Tihomir Tomic has been developing his craft for nearly 40 years. He began as a student at the famed Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and then as an apprentice to Raoul Goldoni, one of the 20th century’s finest glass masters. Now at the pinnacle of his career, Tomic explains that “the technical you learn in school—you must then use your technique to bring out what is inside you.”

Oyyo WhiteHandcrafted Bone China

Thomas Allen EnglandDesigner

Asianera Studio Northern ChinaManufacturer

The Oyyo bone china series is a study in balance and understatement. As the foundation for the entire Oyyo range of objects, we

gave extra careful consideration to perfecting the minute details: the curve on each bowl, the slightly tapered rim of each plate, the

perfect balance of body, spout and handle in the tea pot. Complements pieces from the Oyyo Petal range. Dishwasher safe.

Located in Tangshan about 60 miles southeast of Beijing, Asianera founders Grace Liu and Jian Ping Li pride themselves on marrying western design with traditional eastern technique. Specializing in quality, handcrafted and handpainted bone china, their philosophy is that evidence of the artist’s skill and passion should be evident in each and every piece.

For English designer Thomas Allen, the world is all about shapes. Playing with the fluidity of a transformational curve, the circular base of Oyyo flows into an oval rim referencing the way potters alter thrown shapes with such ease. His willing and open collaboration with the mold makers at Asianera translated the Oyyo concept into a distinctive series of elegant functional shapes.

Leave it better than you found it.Teroforma works solely with artisans and designers we have personally met, in workshops and studios that we

have personally visited. Our partners’ commitment to offering employees fair labor conditions within a safe

and healthy working environment which is free from discrimination and where management is committed to

respecting the rights and dignity of workers is more than a pre-condition to all of the orders we place. It is a

commitment to beauty in all its forms and is reflected in every one of the objects we make.

Work with people you like. When you care deeply about what you do, there is a resistance to thinking of things as “perfect.” There is a

willingness to discuss, collaborate, argue, debate and agree, but never simply to settle for things as they are.

The people we work with believe in taking their time and being thoughtful and careful in what they do. Perhaps

there are faster ways of doing things. But we like the fact that they couldn’t imagine doing it any other way.

Search the world over.Currently, we work with 22 designers and artisan manufacturers who represent 14 different countries, 13

different languages, 12 different time zones, 3 different generations and both genders. We’ve found that

when you gather people as seemingly diverse as these around an idea that allows them to be who they are, it is

actually the similarities that you notice first.

The world can be an inspiring place... You just have to sit at the right table.

Somewhere between Vienna, Austria and Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic in search of the world’s finest glassblowers.

Avva WhiteHandcrafted Bone China

Jian Ping Li Northern ChinaDesigner

Jian Ping Li is a master ceramicist and a devotee of the classic gong-bi style of handpainting which originated in the Han Dynasty. His love of the traditional is tempered by a vision of the future—it is precisely the tension between old and new that he explores in his work. Drawing on architecture, jewelry and furniture design for inspiration, he describes his work as “functional art.”

Asianera Studios Northern ChinaManufacturer

The “rim” design of the Avva series is a nod to the traditional but acknowledges its designer’s

love of the contemporary. Soft angles complement symmetrical curves. As the name implies, it

coordinates effortlessly with our Avva tumblers and can be combined easily with elements of the

Avva Fern series for the height of casual sophistication. Dishwasher safe.

Avva FernHandcrafted Bone China

Like the Oyyo Petal series, Maria Lintott’s Fern pattern began as a series of photos from an

afternoon stroll through Kew Gardens outside London. Once back in her studio, Maria began

layering elements and colors from the photos to create a pattern which is both naturally derived

and graphically innovative. Working together with shape designer Jian Ping Li, Maria plays with the

role of the “rim” in the Avva shape design. Elements of the hand-painted Fern pattern meander

across the rim or just graze its edge. Dishwasher safe.

Designer Louisa Taylor’s love of simplicity and natural materials is evident in this understated

series of everyday stoneware plates, bowls, cups and mugs. Natural, matte finish stoneware on

carefully coordinated colors. Dishwasher and microwave safe.

In 1974, Montien Lertiendumrong left China to open his own ceramics studio and do things his own way. Now run by Montien’s family, Eastern Chinaware continues to make some of the world’s finest hand-finished stoneware and does so with a conscience, receiving the coveted ISO 14001 certification for its environmentally-conscientious production methods.

Like the designer who made them, each of the pieces in the Lolo series is a testament to the notion that less is more. The precise,

minimal lines are effortlessly elegant. Available in a high-polished finish, or a brushed finish with black resin handles, Lolo is made of

only the highest quality 18/10 stainless steel to the exacting standards of the Ribeiro family who have owned and operated Cutipol

for 3 generations. All items are dishwasher safe.

Cutipol is the result of generations of expertise and an insatiable appetite for innovation. Careful selection of raw materials, a close study of ergonomics and a firm commitment to quality has resulted in a reputation for beautifully practical designs. Modern machinery now assists in some elements of the foundry work, but Cutipol remains reliant on the traditions of hand craftsmanship.

For some people, simplicity is about finding the time for some quiet gardening. For others, it’s about reducing complexity by focusing solely on what matters. For José Joaquim, it’s both. Together with his brothers and sisters, the Ribeiros have run Cutipol for three generations with a focus on solid engineering, a commitment to quality and the understanding that simple is beautiful.

Duro

Duro, Fero & Luto Flatware18/10 Stainless Steel

Luto

Designed by Paola Longoni and made from highest quality 18/10 stainless steel at Sambonet (Italy), Duro, Fero and Luto reflect

years spent perfecting an appreciation for the deep importance of small details. Offered in both brushed and polished finishes, each

series presents a different style to match the mood of the table. From the sleek and distinctly Italian Duro to the more traditional

heft of Fero to the balance and grace of Luto, each meticulously crafted series is as durable as it is beautiful. Dishwasher safe.

Sambonet was created 200 years ago when Giuseppe Sambonet, the son of a goldsmith, founded the company to supply tableware to Italian nobility. Located in Orfengo, 60 miles east of Turin, Sambonet was the first company in Europe to manufacture stainless steel flatware and, to this day, continues the tradition of innovation with three designs in MoMA’s permanent collection in NYC.

Paola begins by her design process by sketching her ideas in the traditional way- pencil and paper- but this is where the similarity with her predecessors ends. Her sketches are reproduced three dimensionally using computer-aided design that allows her to prototype and try numerous versions and variations until the shape is absolutely perfect.

Coasters & TrivetsMerino Wool Felt

Inspired by a walk through Berlin’s famous Tiergarten, designer Anna Dabrowski created for

Teroforma a series of 100% merino wool felt coasters and trivets. Each design is available in

green/blue, purple/pink or orange/red. While the natural density of felt makes it relatively durable,

spills should be wiped away quickly and gently cleaned with mild soap and water.

Anna Dabrowski GermanyDesigner

Aetna Felt USAManufacturer

Established 75 years ago in Allentown, PA USA, Aetna Felt continues a successful history of combining high quality imported German felt with the ingenuity of traditional American production. Their enthusiasm for the material’s flexibility and huge range of potential applications is just as important as their skill and expertise. Smart is good. Smart and fun is better.

Anna Dabrowski is a highly conceptual designer and photographer, a characteristic that’s readily apparent in her work and reflects her philosophy that “there is an entire life behind things.” Although she holds an MA from Central St. Martin’s in London and has garnered an enviable collection of awards for her work, it was her collection of spoons that convinced us she was right for us.

...you, for taking an interest in what we do and the things we make.

...our friends and family for being supportive and having faith.

...the people who take the notes, arrange the meetings, get things done and never complain.

...Bob, Sam and Kenny who help get our products from where they’re made to where we are to where they’re going.

...the people who advised us, gave us their honest opinions and helped us realize our vision.

...our designers and artisans for seeing what we see and having the patience and commitment to point out what we don’t.
