Background and DescriptionTermite infestations costs millions of dollars to BiosecurityAuthority of Fiji which includes the application of pesticides, transportation and labor costs. Asian Subterranean termite pest is causing major problem in West of Viti levu and they are active in hot wet areas infesting the household furniture’s, forests and Agricultural crops such as Cassava and Sugarcane. The other arboreal termite Nasutitermes species also causes the similar damages as compared with AST and it is a major concern to manage these Isopteran pests.

How to Reduce the Risks - The DOs and DON’TsProper, regular maintenance of the termite management system is essential to minimize the opportunity for termite attack. The house should be inspected at least annually by Biosecurity officers or licensed pest controller. More frequent inspections may be required in high risk areas (e.g. where there are a great number of trees or virgin bush nearby or in hotspot areas).

Some common practices which may increase the risk of termite problems include:- placing turf, paving, concrete paths, bark and garden beds up against the house wall - leaving loose timber stacked up or leaning against the house- Movement of infested seeds such as cane stalk and cassava stalk for planting to new sites or selling to the neighboring districts

Disposing of Termite Infested Wood and DebrisWood should not be buried. Even pesticide treatments will not prevent buried wood from eventually becoming infested with termites. Downed trees and large shrubs on the ground should be cut into movable segments and taken to a facility for proper disposal.
