Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Winter has arrived and has made its mark early, with

an extremely cold snap hitting this week. With the

cold weather also came some rain, which has meant our

Gala Days have been cancelled. While I know this is

disappointing for many students, there will be other

opportunities for Gala Day participation in Term 3.

Executive Director Visit

Next Thursday we are very excited to have a visit

from the Executive Director for the Regional South

directorate, which spans from Campbelltown to as far

south as Queanbeyan and Batemans Bay. We were

nominated by our Director, Belinda Wall, to have a

visit from the Executive Director, Mark Barreket,

who will visit our school on Thursday where we plan to

showcase our work in Aboriginal Education, our

professional learning in reading and our exciting

involvement in the Primary Mathematics Specialist

Teacher Initiative. I am sure he will be as impressed by

our amazing school as I am every day.

Aboriginal School Shirts

Throughout this term, our Aboriginal students have had

the opportunity to work with artist Michael Fardon to

design a new school shirt that can be worn as part of our

daily school uniform. The design of these shirts has been

approved by our school staff, P&C and local Aboriginal

Education Consultative Group. On the shirt we have the

lyre bird wrapping around the side, which is the totem

for the Dharawal people. There are lyre bird foot prints

travelling along the arm. On the back we have the magpie

which represents the history of the school and Picton,

both of these birds watch over and protect us. There

are faint handprints to represent the students at our

school. The campfire symbols that divide the shirt

represent each child’s story that has been told (history

or family) or is yet to be told or discovered. As the

students come from all different mobs we are all

connected, so those symbols are connected together.

The dot work caught between these stories represent

the stars in the night sky and the dreaming. This shirt

can be worn by all students on any school day but is not

a replacement of our current school shirts (rather an

alternate option). The shirt can be purchased through

the school (not the School Locker) and notes will be

distributed next week detailing cost and sizing

information.

Regional Cross Country

On Wednesday, four of our students, Angus, Emma,

Clancy and Evie represented Razorback Zone in the

Sydney South West Regional Cross Country Carnival. All

four students ran exceptionally well while competing

against students from all over south-west Sydney. I

would like to congratulate them all on representing our

school and zone with such enthusiasm and grit. I would

like to particularly congratulate Clancy, who finished 3rd

in his event and will be progressing through to the state

championships!

Collaboration Days

In Week 10, all of our teachers will take part in their

Collaboration Days, which happen every term. These days

give stage teams the opportunity to meet together,

reflect on the term that has passed, review student

learning data, engage in professional learning and design

plans for the following term. These are valuable

professional learning days and I thank you for your

understanding while replacement teachers cover classes

throughout the week. As a result of Collaboration Days,

our Week 10 Combined Assembly will be moved to Week

One of Term Three.

Twilight Markets

Have you heard the exciting news? This year, the P&C

have partnered with the school to plan our very first

Picton Public School Twilight Market. This will be our

major fundraiser for 2021 and we are hoping will be a

huge community success. At this stage, we have

advertised for expressions of interest for stall

holders, food stall/trucks and performers. Please mark

the date on your calendars and share the information

below with any friends, family or members of the

community who you think may be interested in holding

a stall. We will be planning for our Twilight Markets at

each P&C meeting and will also hold extraordinary

meetings throughout the year.

Congratulations to the following students who were our

SRL Token Winners this fortnight:

Week 5 – Callum and Thomas

Week 8 – Alexis and Violet

Wishing everyone a wonderful long weekend and
