Welcome Back Welcome back to Term Four, I hope you all enjoyed the school holidays and that the students are well-rested and ready to tackle the final term. A special welcome to all our new families who have joined the St Cecilia’s community.

Second Parent Meeting – First Reconciliation 17 October Thank you to the parents and students who attended this meeting. The students re-vised the importance of saying sorry and forgiveness and were taken through the Reconciliation process and ‘Examination of Conscience’. Thank you to Fr January and Sister Maria for supporting this meeting, Special thank you to Mrs Sheen for fa-cilitating the evening.

Professional Development Day - October 14 Staff received training on using the technology in iPads to develop higher-order think-ing skills in students (that is to analyse, evaluate and create). The training was pro-vided by a consultant from the Catholic Education Office in Perth. The aim is to move predominantly away from “Substitution” activities, that is, where technology is just substituted for what the child can do with pen and paper, to “Redefinition’ where tech-nology allows for the creation of new tasks, not previously possible.

School Board AGM – November 28 The Catholic Education Commission of WA requires that all Catholic schools hold an Annual School Community Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is for the School Board to report to the Community on the overall management of the school. Where necessary, elections take place at this meeting to fill any vacancies for the coming year. This meeting will be held on Thursday, November 28 at 6:30 pm in the hall. If you are interested in nominating someone for the School Board, please complete the slip in this newsletter and return it to the office by Tuesday, November 26.

Functions of the School Board • Planning for the present and future operation of the school. • Providing membership on selection panels for the employment of staff to the school. • Passing information on the school and about Catholic Education to persons and organisations in the community. • Liaising in all matters relating to the financial management of the school with persons and organisations in the local Catholic community. • Managing all finances associated with the school. • Advising the Principal concerning school policy that has financial implications.

Out of School Hour Care - Update One Tree is working on a budget for the service and will take this to their November Board meeting, where they will make the final decisions before they move forward with the Education and Care Regulatory Unit.

Congratulations – Miss Murgia Earlier in the year, I mentioned that Miss Murgia had been nominated for the ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards. I’m pleased to announce that Sandra has now been successful in progressing to Stage Two of the awards. Congratulations Sandra and all the best.

World Teacher’s Day Tomorrow, St Cecilia’s will be recognising World Teacher’s Day. Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisa-tion (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society. This year the theme is, “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.” I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only the teachers at our school, but all staff who work towards caring for and educating the students at St Cecilia’s.

First Reconciliation After months of preparation both at school and at home, the children from St John the Baptist and St Cecilia’s parishes will be making their First Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday 31 Octo-ber at 6.30pm at St Cecilia’s Church. Father January and Father Edward will be leading the Litur-gy. Please keep these children in your prayers as the time draws near for them to receive this special sacrament. A big thank you once again to class teachers, members of the Sacramental Team and parents for helping to prepare your child for this very special time.

Halloween… and… All Saints Day (1 November) The ancient English word ‘hallow’ declares something holy or blessed. All Saints Day was for centuries called Hallow-Mass, the Mass celebrating all the saints. Halloween is a shortened form of Hallows-Even, the evening before All Saints. So, how did Halloween become the night witches ride and disembodied spirits roam the earth? As with many other celebrations, we can thank the Irish. Halloween began as the Celtic festi-val of the Lord of the dead. It was believed that on the night before the feast, the gates of the underworld were opened and that ghosts, demons, and witches were allowed to roam freely. In response to this otherworldly menace, the Celts followed the principle “if you can’t beat ‘em,

join ‘em” and disguised themselves as various kinds of ghouls to escape harm. (From this practice comes our custom of Halloween masquerading). The Celts also tried to appease evil spirits by offering them food and wine. This is where ‘Trick-or-Treat’ comes from ‘to bribe evil spirits who wandered about the earth to trick unsuspecting people!’ In the ancient Celtic calendar, November 1 began the New Year. As we know the evening before, were times of revelry, dancing, singing, games (desperately looking for someone to kiss at midnight!) and often gener-ally making a fool of oneself. Halloween, celebrates our “holiness”! “Halloween” tradition is closely connected to the feast of All Saints. The countless people many of whom we have known personally – including our family, friends and strangers, all those anonymous saints – who quietly, with no fanfare or publicity, lived generous, holy and faithful lives, and have gone to God, as the Eucharistic Prayer puts it, ‘have gone before us with the sign of faith’, singing and dancing in heaven in the Father, Son and Spirit, Mary and all God’s saints and angels. Let the fun of Halloween in our community celebrate OUR HOLINESS!

Whole School Mass Please join us in celebrating All Saints Day at a whole school Mass on Friday 01 November. The Mass will be held at St Cecilia’s Church at 8:45am and will be led by the Year Six class; this will be the final school Mass they lead before graduating at the end of this term. Later in the term we will have a whole school Mass to celebrate our patron saint, St Cecilia, on Friday 22 November (led by Year Four), Mass of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (led by Year Three) and our End of Year Mass on Friday 13 December. As always, families are very welcome to attend our school Masses with all Masses beginning at 8:45am.

Day for Daniel Friday 25 October is Day for Daniel. Day for Daniel is organised by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and is Aus-tralia’s largest child safety awareness and education day; it is a national day of action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and prevention. The goal of the foundation is to make Australia a safe place for all children. To recognise the day, we are encouraging all members of St Cecilia’s (students, staff and parents) to wear red clothing and participate in a walk around the outside of the school. Students are asked to wear their sport uniform with their item of red clothing. The walk will take place on Friday morning during Morning Fitness time (8:30am-8:45am). To help raise funds for the foundation, we are asking for a gold coin donation from all those wearing red. Footy Colours Day Thank you to everyone for your support of Footy Colours Day at the end of Term Three. As a school we raised $108.00 to donate to Children’s Cancer Foundation to assist.

Uniforms As the end of the year draws near, we are beginning to notice that some students are becoming a little ‘relaxed’ with their uniforms. It is important that we keep up the standard right through until the end of the year as to main-tain our pride in our school. Students that don’t comply with the uniform code will be issued with notices that are to be taken home and sighted by parents. If for some reason your child is not in the correct uniform, please send a note in to your child’s teacher with an explanation. Your support in this matter is appreciated and valued.

Book lists for 2020 Booklists for 2020 classes are now available on the school website. If you are unable to access the website, please contact the office for a paper copy. If you do want to have booklist items delivered to the school before the end of the current school year then orders must be placed online by Friday 01 November. Any orders placed after this will be delivered to your home and will include a delivery charge. Please note, all ordering is to be done online; please do not send orders back to school. In the past, some parents have organised purchase of stationery items themselves from K-Mart or local newsa-

gents. This has often resulted in the supply of incorrect stationery for the start of the school year as these stores

do not stock or supply some of the specific items required (e.g. dotted third exercise books). It is important that

these items are purchased through Campion. Other items such as Library bags, pencil cases, lead and coloured

pencils may be purchased from other stationery stockists.

2019 Year Book

This year our Year Book will be available for purchase via Flexischool and not on your school fee invoice. We will advise via SMS when this option is live for payment.

Uniform Shop Closing Date The closing date for ordering uniforms for 2019 is 3.00pm on Wednesday 4 December 2019. Please have all orders placed by then for delivery in 2019. We will then close the uniform shop for the remainder of the year to do a stocktake and order stock for the new year. The online ordering will reopen on Thursday 2 January 2020. Orders placed from then will be available for collection from the school office on Friday 31 January between 10.00am & 2.00pm.

MORNING ARRIVAL

Each morning supervision is provided from 8.00am; however, all students and families are to

wait in the undercover area until 8.15am. Students arriving before 8.00am are to sit on the seats outside

the office until a teacher is on duty. Please do not allow children to play on the play equipment,

especially the equipment in the Kindy/Pre-Primary area before and after school.

Year Four Fun Events From

Term Three...

Book Week

The Year Four class enjoyed the chance to dress up as their favourite Book Characters.

As part of our school activities the Year Four class led the Father’s Day Assembly. In order to prepare for this assem-bly we adopted the “Readers Theatre” approach to reading during our Literacy time to prepare a humourous take on what qualities make a good father for his/ her child. We

used examples of famous fathers and their children being interviewed in an Ellen De Generes style reality TV show.

Another thrill for the Year Fours in Term Three was the arrival of our new laptops and iPads. This has made our classwork so much

fun and educational. We thank Mr Sta Maria and Mrs Fittock for all the work they have

done in setting these up for us.
