PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents and Carers, Grandparent’s Day On Friday, 8 November 2019 we welcomed over 200 grandparents to our school to celebrate Grandparent’s Day. On this day we recognised the important role that grandparents play in our lives. The theme for our Grandparent’s Day was “Recycle Reuse”. Each stage had a different activity. Kindergaten, Year 1 and Year 2 upcycled tin cans into pots to grow plants. Year 3 and Year 4 found lots of creative and different ways to use plastic bags. Years 5 and 6 turned old t- shirts into fashionable shopping bags. It was wonderful to have our grandparents working with us in the classrooms to ensure the success of these activities. After a wonderful cupcake recess, we were treated to some songs by our magnificent choir. This was followed by a showcase assembly with performances from the band, the choir, the cultural dance group, the dance group, the drama club and our scene stealing kindergarten percussionists. Thank you to all of our grandparents, parents and friends, who visited us on Grandparent’s Day. We enjoyed sharing our learning space with you and thank you for your help in the classroom. I would also like to thank Mrs Mullen and Mrs Dubojski for their hard work in organising all of the activities, the cupcakes and the assembly. Could I also thank the staff and students of HPS for always giving their best in everything that they do. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful learning community here at Hillsborough Public School. Term 4 Week 6 20 November 2019

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

Grandparent’s Day

On Friday, 8 November 2019 we welcomed over 200 grandparents to our school to celebrate Grandparent’s Day.

Years 5 and 6 turned old t-shirts into fashionable shopping bags.

Multicultural Public Speaking

Congratulations to Jasper C for his incredible success at the State Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. Jasper represented our Region at this event in Sydney on Friday, 15 November. There were 12 speakers overall and I have been told all speakers presented exceptional prepared speeches. As part of the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, speakers are also required to present an impromptu speech on a topic selected by the panel of adjudicators. This year’s topic was “What a mess’.

The winner of the event was from the Illawarra region.

We congratulate Jasper on his outstanding achievement.

State Athletics Success

We are extremely proud of the achievements of our Year 6 student, Amelia R, who represented Hunter Region at the State Athletics carnival in Sydney on November 6 and 7.

Amelia qualified for both the 200m and 100m events.

I am thrilled to announce that Amelia came 3rd in the final of the 100m event!

Well done Amelia! Your school and community are very proud of you!

End of Year Activities

As the end of year rapidly approaches, could I please encourage our parents and carers to keep an eye out on the Skoolbag App, the website and newsletter for the details of upcoming events at school. Notes will be sent home, however, if they do go missing, you will always find current information on our website and on the app.

Rookies Chess Team

We are also very proud of the Rookies Chess Team that competed in the Regional games on Wednesday 6 November. Although they didn’t come away with a placing, they played fantastic and the end results were close.

Have a great week!

5/6B Report

All of Hillsborough is exceptionally proud of Amelia Rs’ effort last week at the NSWPSSA Athletics Carnival at Homebush. Amelia went into the meet as Hunter Regional Champion in both the 100 and 200 metre sprints and was up against the fastest 12 year old girls in the state.

Amelia ran superbly in the heats and the semi-finals to qualify for the finals in both events. She even set new personal best times along the way.

Amelia finished 7th in the 200 final, enthusiastically cheered on by her schoolmates watching live streaming of the races in the senior classrooms. If the Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation, then Amelia’s 100 final was the race that stopped her friends from going home as they eagerly awaited the final at ten minutes past three.

As usual, Amelia didn’t disappoint. She showed her toughness at the end of a tiring two days to power home in the last few metres and only miss second place by the narrowest of margins in a photo finish. Her third place finish in another fantastic time against an elite field of great athletes was very special to watch. Those of us at school wondered if she could hear the cheering emanating from our rooms all the way down there in Sydney.

As we know, Hillsborough students constantly do wonderful things inside and outside our school; academically, socially and on the sporting field. Amelia’s efforts at the state carnival will ensure that her running ranks right up there with the best among all those achievements.
