Reminders
Term 4 Week 2, 2014
We, at Bourke High, believe that all students can succeed.
Bourke High School is a caring school and we acknowledge that
effective learning takes place when students and teachers feel secure and safe, where morale is high,
where people are happy and where a high value is placed on working
together.
Principal: Mr Robert Bourke Deputy Principals: Ms Gaye Hoskins Mr Andrew Ryder
Deputy Principal’s Report
Term 4 has started well at Bourke High School. Since we returned to school
last week the positive attitude and level of effort shown by students from Year
7 to Year 11 has been impressive. Year 12 began their HSC Examinations this
morning with the first English paper. Visual Arts is the final HSC exam for
Bourke High School students. It will be held on November 3rd. Good luck to
Year 12 as they navigate this final and very important part of their secondary
schooling.
This term the teaching staff will be focused on literacy. Teachers will complete
professional learning around the NSW Literacy Continuum. In particular, the
school will concentrate on comprehension. A majority of teachers have
already completed training to improve their knowledge and understanding of
the comprehension aspect of the continuum. During Weeks 3 to 7, teams of
teaching will look in depth at aligning assessment in their own subject areas to
the continuum. In the final part of this term these teams will ‘map’ students
from Years 7 to 9 by placing them on the continuum for comprehension. As a
follow-up, in the first term of 2015 this information will be used to adapt
teaching and learning to meet the needs of students.
Transition interviews for Years 8 and 10 are well underway. Mrs Anna
McCorkle has been working on future planning and subject selection for next
year. Anyone wishing for further information can contact the school and talk
to Mrs McCorkle or Mrs Hoskins. The subjects that will run in 2015 will be
finalised later this week.
Year 10 will begin their Yearly Examination at the start of Week 5.
An examination timetable will be available by Friday this week. Examinations
for Years 7 to 9 will begin on November 17.
This Friday there will be a performance of “Freedom Rides: the Play”.
A schools’ performance will start in the MPC at 11.30am and a community
performance will take place in the evening from 5.30pm.
Everyone is welcome.

Outdoor Education Excursion
During the last week of Term 3, Mr Bourke and I had the pleasure of taking Year 11 PDHPE on an outdoor
excursion to Gundabooka, National Park. The two day expedition involved a 6km hike to the top of Ben-
nett’s Gorge, where we looked over the far reaching terrain of the National Park. After the big hike, we set
up camp at Dry Tank for the evening. This is where the real outdoor experience began! The students
willingly accepted the challenge of only using a “flint” to light their camp fire. “If we do not light this fire
using this flint, I will go without dinner as punishment”, Samuel Simmons said determinedly. After 30
minutes of persistence, courage, sweat and tears, the three boys finally managed to light their fire and en-
joy their camp dinner. Day two started early, with a much less demanding walk over a small mountain, to
see the majestic view of Bennett’s Gorge, which we had hiked the previous day.
I would personally like to thank the year 11 boys- Samuel Simmons, Cody Simmons and Baily Smith for
their enthusiasm and fantastic behaviour on the trip. I would also like to extend this thank you to Mr Rob
Bourke, who with his knowledge of the outdoors guided us on an enjoyable and educational experience.
Kirsty Jedrzejak.
