FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents, Guardians, Carers and Friends of Wedderburn College, SCHOOL REVIEW The School Review process has continued this week with our panel members conducting fieldwork at the College on Monday and Tuesday, culminating with a final day of recommendations on Friday. I wish to thank all students, staff and parents for their support of this process and for their contribution to the focus groups. Your contribution will set us on positive improvement path into the future. SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT (SWPBS) Our College has identified the implementation of School Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) as a key priority. Significant resources of time and effort will be devoted this implementation process over the next twelve months. Promoting wellbeing at school can substantially improve social and emotional outcomes of young people. School-wide positive behaviour support (SWPBS) is a whole-school framework which provides school professionals with an approach to promote improved behaviour at their school. SWPBS has been developed from evidence and data, demonstrating the most effective ways to prevent and respond to problem behaviour at school. Research has shown that SWPBS is successful in reducing problem behaviour, improving school culture, and increasing academic performance. Calm and orderly classrooms are essential pre-conditions for learning. In advance, I thank parents and guardians for their support of all school policies and procedures as we continue on this journey. I also thank Mr Dean Lockhart who will coordinate this initiative, together with team members, Mr Steve Hocking, Miss Nikki Lockhart, Mrs Annita Steel and Miss Laura Trembath who, together with myself, make up the implementation team. COLLEGE VALUES As part of the SWPBS implementation, we have had cause to

YEAR 12 END OF YEAR ARRANGEMENTS There will be an assembly to farewell our Year 12 students on Wednesday 24 October at 9.00am. Students will be dismissed from the College after this assembly to begin their Study Week for those students who are sitting exams. If students wish to remain onsite for study on this day, or at any other time during their study week, they are required to be in school uniform while at school and are required to sign in and sign out at the front office. Teachers will be available to work with students during their normal scheduled periods. The exam period will commence with the English exam on Wednesday 31st October. Students are permitted to wear casual clothes to their exams and during the exam period. We wish our Year 12 students every best wish for their study week and their upcoming exams and trust that their effort will bring its own reward. We also congratulate our VCAL students who are finishing up their requirements during this stage also. Please note the expectation that you are required to wear school uniform if at school after the dismissal date. We look forward to celebrating your achievements at graduation. With the conclusion of official classes, students should note that they remain enrolled as students of the College and should be sure that their behavior and conduct is beyond reproach during this time to ensure that they finish well and proud, without compromising their right to graduate or sit exams. Our community is united in wishing each of you the very best in these last weeks. YEAR 2 CAMP I enjoyed hearing the Year 2 students speak of achieving their goals and challenging themselves on their recent camp at Rose’s Gap. I was met with smiling faces and stories of success. Well done to all students and special thanks to Mrs Deirdre McKenzie and Mrs Lea Humphrey for giving of their time to organise and attend this camp. Most parents and guardians realize that camp and excursion cannot go ahead without this voluntary commitment from teachers and staff, and I trust that you have found time to thank and acknowledge them for their generosity. Ms Rachel Lechmere, Principal

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL SWPBS (SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT) Last week the SWPBS team, Ms Rachel Lechmere, Ms Laura Trembath, Mrs Anita Steel, Ms Nikki Lockhart, Mr Stephen Hocking and I participated in a two day professional development in Bendigo on our implementation plan for SWPBS . It was a very productive couple of days for our team. We spent time understanding the research behind SWPBS and the improvements this framework will make to the learning culture at our school. It also affirmed our current progress in our implementation plan. Further to this, it provided us with the next steps we need to take to in this long journey to be fully successful in implementing SWPBS. Our College is currently working through implementing the first of 7 essential features titled “Teaching Expected Behaviours” It was great to see a high level of enthusiasm and motivation from all team members, which gives us all a great deal of confidence moving forward. The team was created ensuring key stakeholders within the college were represented: primary, secondary, both genders, wellbeing and years of teaching experience. This newsletter item is seeking expressions of interest from any student, parent, guardian or carer wanting to be a member of the Wedderburn College SWPBS team this will ensure all stakeholder voices are then in included within this very important process in our college. Could any

persons wishing to be considered for this important role please get in touch with me. SCHOOL UNIFORM - HATS It was great to see all students back, energised and ready to learn. The majority of students had their bucket / broad brim school hat on (which is our preference) or a navy blue equivalent, great work!! Unfortunately, a very small number of students did not have a hat, or the hat was the incorrect colour. The message to all students was to start the term on a Sun Smart note by bringing the correct hat to school for the start of Term 4. Starting from this Monday (15/10/18) students out of uniform including not wearing the correct hat, will receive a lunchtime detention. Melanoma skin cancer is the 4th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. We regard our students’ wellbeing as our highest priority; hence, wearing the correct school hat, along with school uniform is important to ensure we are a Sun Smart school. We look forward to all students being Sun Smart next week. The uniform shop has a full range of hats and is open on Thursdays 3pm - 4pm and Friday 8.30am – 9.30am or contact Mrs Kylie Cunningham on 0409 389 916 to arrange another time. Mr Dean Lockhart, Assistant Principal

FOUNDATION/ONE (F-1) Welcome back to Term four. We were very excited when we returned to be able to enjoy mat-time on our bright, new rug. There is a coloured spot for everyone to sit! We have also been busy using the new Lego to build special places. In Inquiry, we are investigating the features of special places and what makes them special. In Maths, we are looking at the topic, shapes. This week our assessment task will be on triangles. Mrs Tanya Chalmers, Classroom Teacher GRADE 1/2 Sixteen amazing grade twos, Ibu Lea Humphrey and Mrs McKenzie went to Roses Gap Camp last Thursday and Friday. We were very proud of the students for having a go at new things and for being independent and resilient. Below are some student comments. Mrs McKenzie, Classroom Teacher LOW ROPES There were 2 groups for low ropes. In our group first we did a game where you had to go from a tyre, using just a rope, to get to the platform. For our first turn we all didn’t make it but for the second try we did! Yay! We went to the next course and it was like a tight rope but with a loose rope to hold. With most of them we needed “Spotters”. Next was like an obstacle course where you weren’t allowed to touch the ground. Last was the see-saw, we were hoping we could balance it with everybody but only two could balance it. by Violet and Caitlyn

GIANT SWING Firstly we got in our gear then we got our black safety helmet and safety glasses. Then everybody pulled a black rope to make the person go higher. Some people went to the top and most went below the top because they were scared. Then we pulled a small green rope very quickly. We were flying!

by Xander and Riley

HUT BUILDING At Roses Gap we did hut building. First when we started to walk Mrs Mac got us lost, then she got us lost again, then we found the way! We started with the frame, then we covered it with sticks and leaves. After that we did the walls and roof and covered it with sticks and leaves. Then we had a look at all the huts. by Ava and Ben

GIANT KOALA At the Giant Koala we saw a real koala that was sleeping, lots of chooks, an emu, two pigs, two goats and two turkeys. We got some food to feed the animals. The statue of the giant koala had red eyes. Before we got to feed the animals we had to eat lunch. We had to walk through the giant koala to get in the shop. I felt happy when we got to feed the animals and see the animals. The giant koala was made of material.

by Leela and April

BOB’S SHED In Bob’s Shed we played ping pong, chess, Uno, Twister, Checkers, Connect Four and Jengo . We watched people doing tricks, I did a cartwheel and a somersault while clutching the bat!

by Hannah and Brock

BEEHIVE FALLS At camp we went to the Beehive Falls and it was a lot of fun! It was a very long walk and it took an hour and a half. We had to walk on rocks to get to the waterfall. I had found a big, rough rock that led to the view of trees on a hill! While

we were going back, I slipped on slippery rocks and it didn’t hurt! When we came back Ibu Humphrey said “We should walk to Mount Difficult” But we didn’t!

by Nada

Flying Fox When we went to the flying fox we had to listen to the instructor. He showed how to put the harness on Hannah. Then we had to jump off the platform. Then we could fly!

GRADE 5/6 Welcome back! I hope you all had a fantastic break, are feeling refreshed and are ready for an exciting final term.

In English this term, we will begin by exploring and experimenting with poetic devices. Today we had our first Math Pathways test of the year. Well done to all students on their effort and growth today.

This term in Science, we will be learning about space and our solar system. On Friday 9th November, we will be heading to Scienceworks to watch two shows in the planetarium and explore the museum.

This October is Walk to School month. All students are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to school, even if it is only part of the way.

A reminder that homework is due on Fridays and that all students should be reading daily.

SPORTS UPDATE LMR ATHLETICS Bendigo turned on some beautiful spring weather for us to compete in on Thursday. We had 14 students representing the College and each rose to the occasion of competing against the best athletes in the Loddon Mallee Region. Carly Isaac competed in the maximum number of events (5 individual events and a relay for the day) earning some exceptional results! It was pleasing to see our two senior girls relays compete strongly; three smooth baton changes and some pacey legs saw each team come home with green medals. There was very little difference between first and third placed in both events, also! Below are the results of those who placed in the top three for their event. 18-20 years 200m dash 1st Carly Isaac 18-20 years Long Jump 1st Carly Isaac 18-20 years 400m dash 2nd Brodie Keller 18-20 years 1500m run 2nd Carly Isaac 16 years 400m run 2nd Grace Lockhart 18-20 years 400m run 3rd Carly Isaac 18-20 years 800m run 3rd Carly Isaac 17 years High Jump 3rd Rochelle Vella 14 years Javelin Throw 3rd Olivia Lockhart 14 years 1500m run 3rd Aliza Lockhart 17 years 4x100m relay 3rd Rochelle Vella, Aliza Lockhart, Nikita Glenister, Simone Jackson 18 years 4x100m relay 3rd Tobi Shelley, Tess Jackson, Grace Lockhart, Carly Isaac There were plenty more competitive placings; each student should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout the day on and off the field/track. Thanks to Mrs Joan Earl for her assistance towards the day. We also had some valued parent support as well as some extra cheering from Mr Gretgrix and Mrs Hall. Thank-you to all those who supported the day! NCD CLAY-TARGET SHOOTING & LAWN BOWLS This event will be held on Friday, November 2nd (likely to be at Boort). If you would like to enter a team of four for the lawn bowls or enter individually in the Clay-target shooting please write your name on the form on the sports noticeboard which will go up shortly. KANGA CRICKET On Thursday 18th October some Grade 4, 5 and 6 students will participate in a round robin T20 Kanga Cricket Tournament at Boort Park. Students will travel to and from the event on Garry Hayes' Bus. The bus will leave the College at 8:50am and return at 3pm approximately. Students are required to wear full school sports uniform. WALK TO SCHOOL KICKS OFF FOR 2018! Walk to School kicked off yesterday across the state with thousands of primary school kids walking, riding and scooting to and from school. VicHealth hosted a media launch at Yarra Primary School with two of our ambassadors AFLW player and Western Bulldogs captain Katie Brennan and AFL player and Demons defender Nev Jetta. For those who want to catch up on all the launch action visit http://bitly.com/2y8UFhF HOW SCHOOLS CAN HELP MAKE WALK TO SCHOOL BIGGER AND BETTER: Teach your students the importance of being active for good health – we want to teach all Victorian kids the

benefits of being active and building healthy habits for life. As well as encouraging students to walk, ride and scoot to school we want to reinforce why it is so important to be active in order to live a healthy life.

Use your handy teacher's booklet – we’ve made bringing Walk to School into your classroom even easier with lesson plans, worksheets and templates for students to plan. Available to download through your portal on the Walk to School website.

Keep your classroom calendars up to date – encourage and reward your students by tracking their active travel. It also makes it easier when you need to submit your data

Encourage kids to deck out their shoes, bike and scooter – help make the journey to and from school even more fun by combining creativity with physical activity.

Remind parents/carers of our Facebook competition – families who share pictures of their kids' creative Walk to School designs can win a signed Australian Rules Football jumper. They just need to upload a picture of their kids' designs to Facebook and tag @WalktoSchool and #walktoschool

Pump up your social channels and promote Walk to School – we want to see all the exciting events you are holding at your school for Walk to School 2018. Make sure to tag us in your posts with #walktoschool

If you have any questions, contact the Walk to School team at [email protected]. It’s now October which means the Great Cycle Challenge is up and away. It is not too late to join our team and start riding (or walking, running, etc) The purpose is to raise some much needed funds for children fighting cancer. There is no expectation on the level of funds you can raise but every little bit helps and also goes toward the Wedderburn College total tally. This Thursday is Kick Cancer's Butt Day!

This means that any sponsorship that we raise on this particular day will be doubled by one of four generous supporters of the Great Cycle Challenge. If you just want to support this cause without riding, we would love you to do so. The links are on the Wedderburn page https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Teams/WedderburnCollege/h Graham Veal, College Chaplain

The past students enjoyed the challenge remembering the location of old classrooms which had vanished over the years with upgrades to buildings. The group held a dinner at the Wedderburn Hotel on Saturday night. Many of the ‘tall’ stories were shared of the good old days. The class of 1992 left a short note of inspiration around making it count for our current Year 12 class. Mr Danny Fowles, Teacher reporting
