Excellence Through Opportunity

BUSY Last week I was fortunate enough to attend two great events presented by the College. The first was the opening of the Art Exhibition where work from three local schools, Kyabram P-12, St Augustine’s and St Mary’s was on display. Most of the pieces had been created/designed or painted by VCE students. The opening was well attended and showcased some outstanding pieces of work from our students. I would like to congratulate our Arts Domain and our VCE students on their part in this very impressive exhibition.

The second great event last week was the College’s Music Expo. Again the Kyabram Theatre was ‘packed’ with family, friends and interested community members to see our students perform. The night showcased our students’ skills from P-12 (and a few talented teachers too) with a variety of performances. The highlights for me were the violinists. The performance demonstrated skill, was entertaining and embraced the P-12 concept. I would like to thank Mrs Meeking, Mr Morrison and their great team on a brilliant night’s entertainment.

Other important activities coming our way are the Grade 3/4 and 5/6 students’ Surf Lifesaving program in Shepparton this Thursday and Friday. We had our third Prep transition day this Wednesday and also our Prep to Grade 6 transition sessions occurring for the last three weeks. These sessions are where students visit their 2016 areas of the school and work with new staff once a week over a three week period. On the 8th December, the state wide ‘Orientation Day’ for Grade 6 into Year 7 will be held. We will provide more information on this as the event gets closer.

BOOKSTALL - YEARS 7-12 The Years 7-12 Bookstall is being held today at the Bocce Club. Opening hours are 12 noon to 6:30 pm so please remember to call in to collect your child’s 2016 text books. If you have any queries, the Office Team will be at the Bocce Club to help you.

CHURINGA 2015

The Churinga school magazine showcases the College’s events for the year. This is a great magazine which looks over the year’s events and is a keepsake for students for the future, to remember their years at the College. The 2015 Churinga magazine is currently being finalised and will be ready before the end of the school year. If you would like a copy, please finalise your payment of $15 at the College office by the end of November. This will mean that you receive a copy and don’t miss out. Generally speaking, the meaning of the word Churinga is an indigenous term and denotes a stone or wooden object which holds together legends and stories. A great way to hold the memories of our school years.

I have had a sneak preview of the 2015 edition and it is jam packed with photos and information from all year levels from Prep to Year 12 and so I am looking forward to seeing the final product.

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA Congratulations to Miller Griffiths who has been selected as a member of the School Sport Victoria 12 years & under Track & Field Team for his High Jump achievements. At Monday’s P-4 assembly Miller spoke about his journey so far, and we all wish him well for his Canberra experience. I you would like to support Miller, $2 Raffle Tickets are for sale at the Primary Office in order to raise funds his Canberra trip. Good luck Miller!

5/6 MARKET PLACE Our 5/6 students have been preparing and planning for their 2015 Market Place Activities. Here our students create their own small business and then they begin trading on a weekly basis for the remainder of the year. Some businesses include Rent Collectors, Insurance, Wholesales, Bankers and food, to mention a few. Our students learn the skills of working as a team, planning and financial and business management. It is also a great deal of fun!

NO HATS / NO PLAY For this term 4 and term 1 of each year our school implements its Sunsmart Policy. All primary students must have their wide brim hat for playing outside. The rule is quite simple: No Hats / No Play Here we can work together to protect our young people from the hot sun during the warmer months.

LAST DAY OF PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR TERM 4 Please take note that the last day of school for 2015 primary students is Thursday 17

th December.

Grade 2 News

The grade 2 students are continuing to work on an array of tasks in maths, polishing up skills in multiplication, division, counting patterns and measurement. We have been using Mathletics as further practise and revision and many students have particularly enjoyed challenging each other on “Live Mathletics”, where they can race to answer as many questions as possible in 60 seconds, all the while taking care to be accurate as three errors sees them eliminated! We are very proud of the wonderful work habits that the grade 2 children have been showing over the term – they are showing great command of the school values and being fantastic members of the school community. With such delightful students to work with, we are looking forward to a busy but educational final four weeks of the year.

Grade 3/4 News CRICKET VICTORIA AND LITTLE ATHLETICS

During week 5 (and week 6 because of rain) we had Alanna and Leanne from Little Athletics and Cricket Victoria come to run some skills sessions with each of our classes. The sessions were full of excellent activities and lots of fun.

AQUAMOVES - THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH We’re looking forward to our Open Water Learning Experience with Life Saving Victoria. This is based on ‘Respect the River – Saving Lives in Australian Rivers’ program. This program is totally funded – partly by Coca Cola - and is free for our students. It’s happening in the outdoor pool so sun protection will be necessary. It goes for two hours - 12:30pm to 2:30pm. In the morning we’ll have a morning tea break and play at Kids Town and have lunch at Victoria Park Lake.

ON DEMAND TESTING We are continuing with On Demand this week. Most students will have completed testing this week.

Year 5/6 News After a very busy and interrupted few weeks students have settled back in to finish off the year in a productive manner. They have been completing geography maps, beginning explanation writing and madly preparing for Market Place.

Market Place gives the students an opportunity to buy products from wholesalers and then trade in a business trying to make a profit. All students are fully engaged in the whole process and their first of five weeks of trading was last Friday. They are learning a great deal about thought of working for a living and the restrictions of buying with no cash. If you would like to participate in trading, we do this from 11:30 am on Fridays. We can arrange “cash” for you.

This Friday coming we are taking all students to Aquamoves for a 2 x 2 hour Water Safety session. The group will be divided in 2 and their time in Shepparton will be split between Aquamoves and Kidstown. This is a free activity that is essential for all students leading into summer. Please support us by making sure your child has returned their permission note.

Over the next few weeks we will be doing transition for Year 4s into their new 5/6 grades for 2016 on Wednesday afternoon. We are hoping to help students familiarise themselves with one another and all the teachers in the 5/6 Team.

Students have been working on a Heritage Project this term and we will be holding an Expo of their work on Thursday 26

th November from 9:30 am till 11:00 am. Please feel free to come along.

Congratulations to our 5/6 leaders who did a great job running the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Wednesday last week.

Values award winners from our 5/6 assembly are Dakyiah Cahill, Jade Dawson, James Woods, Macy Watkins, Tyler

Collins, Corey Browne, Matthew Neff, Rochelle Esperon, Shanae Doherty, Sarah Bassett, Will Brooks, Hannah

Greenman, Grace Warde, Carly Coburn, Jordan Smith, Alisha Schippl and Shantelle Kraan.

IMPORTANT 5/6 SEPEP INFORMATION Next week is our final week of SEPEP. By the end of this week all classes will have played the other teams within their own class. Next week on each class’s PE day, they will combine to have a big (3 hour) round robin tournament between all 3 classes. The winners from each tournament will play off in clubs time on Friday 27

th November with

the winners playing the teachers… and Mr Jenner! Anyone is welcome to watch. Please note that it may be quite hot and students should bring lots of water (frozen), plenty of snacks, sunscreen, team colours and banners to be prepared for the day. All students have worked well throughout this unit, one of the team jobs was to be the reporter. Below are some articles the students from 5/6M and 5/6PB wrote. Well done!

It was a very hot day and 5/6 PB was playing basketball to complete their 2 week tournament. The best players over the 2 weeks were Macca, Charlie B, Court S, Morgan, Shantelle, Jaz C, Shannon, Macy, Court M, Sam and Dan. These were voted on by the umpires of each match. Overall results were: First place: Blue Bees Second place: Watch Out Third place: Red Devils Next week on Tuesday all the grade 5/6 teams will play against each other, after they play each other the overall winning team will play the teachers in clubs time. By Courtney S, Trinity and Shantelle

In term 4 all the grade 5/6 students played basketball. The top players in Mr Mangan’s class were Brodie, Alisha, Fitzy, Tailah, Tanner, Michael and Brayden. The team that won was the Red Jets, they played their best through all games. In practice we learnt about shooting, defending etc… Big thanks to Mrs Mangan for giving us this fantastic opportunity. We all enjoyed it and had great fun. By Brodie and Alisha

LEARNING CURVE NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Focusing on m.a.r.b.l.e.s.

Often when students are faced with completing assessment tasks and sitting tests/exams they experience anxious feelings which cause them to lose focus on the task at hand. It is important for them to understand that having these feelings is perfectly normal, however they need to learn how to overcome them positively. When growth mindsets are cultivated in their approach, students are empowered to remain focused on achieving their intended outcomes. Recent research on positive psychology has revealed that these mindsets not only build students’ self-esteem, but more importantly, stimulate them to shine as people and do good things. Positive structures underpinning their thinking enable students to be proactive when pressure situations arise. The acronym M.A.R.B.L.E.S. describes such a structure to scaffold their thinking. The strategy is to concentrate on each letter in turn in order to not lose their M.A.R.B.L.E.S. The letters stand for:

M – Metacognition: not letting their minds wander and focusing on thinking about their thinking using Habits of Mind

A – Attitude: to achieve personal bests, PBs, they need positive growth mindsets and “can do” and “want to” attitudes

R – Respect: believing in themselves, their teachers and having real respect for themselves as successful students

BL – Body Language: assertive but not aggressive, confident but not arrogant, focused but not consumed

E – Effort: when the going gets tough, they increase their efforts; they find a way through grit and mindfulness

S – Sync (Senior): on exam day all the pieces of the jigsaw need to fit together perfectly; producing flow in what they do Smile (Middle): say hello to the world every day with a happy smiling face to show that you are striving, thriving and flourishing. Time spent concentrating on M.A.R.B.L.E.S. will build growth mindsets which will reap significant benefits for students’ performances on assessment tasks and tests exams.

YARD MAINTENANCE WORK If you are available to assist with clean up/maintenance at the College could you please contact me by email ([email protected]) or by phoning the College. We have a number of areas that require attention such as painting, pruning, edging and brushcutting.

YEAR 9 PROJECT PRESENTATIONS Year 9 students will be presenting the project work that they have completed this semester to parents and friends on Friday, November 20

th, starting at 11:30am in the Year 9 Community Building. Students have prepared for this event

and would like to show you their work and answer any questions that you may have. A BBQ lunch will be provided. Please contact Vivienne Thomas if you would like to attend.

Year 9 Outdoor Recreation Melissa Clark

On Friday the 6th of November the Year 9 Outdoor Recreation Class headed over to Victoria Lake

in Shepparton for some Windsurfing and Paddle Boarding. It is the first time this group has had the opportunity to partake in any of these recreational activities. The students showed their resilience in trying to control their board and work with the wind. The students had the opportunity to use a range of different sails, ranging from small to large. All students were successful windsurfers and paddle boarders on the day and their instructor John Shaw was brilliant. He offered the students a free lesson for them and their family if they decided to have another go. Thank you to John Shaw for the opportunity and thank you to the Year 9 Outdoor Recreation Class; you are a fantastic group of students and I hope you enjoyed the experience. Well Done.

VCE Art Exhibition Sue Meeking

An initiative of local Art teachers has seen an interesting display of senior student art ‘pop up’ at the Town Hall of Kyabram which is now known as a great art space.

At the opening on Thursday, 12th November a crowd gathered to celebrate the artists who

have spent the year bringing their art pieces to year 12 standard. The display was from three local schools including ours and is really worth a look during the day when the Town Hall is open.

A huge congratulations to Ms Cailtyn Powell who brought this event to our school calendar and to the students who created thought provoking art.

Our Cow has Students over the Moon! She may be made of fibre-glass, but ‘Mootritious’ has certainly re-established herself at Kyabram P -12 Primary Campus after receiving a ‘new look’ as part of Dairy Australia’s Picasso Cows Make-Over program. The Picasso Cows Make-Over program celebrates one of Australia’s biggest agricultural industries, the dairy industry, and also teaches kids that milk doesn’t just come from the supermarket! As part of our art sessions, students have spent the last three months revamping our much loved Picasso Cow called Mootritious. This year, over 50 schools from dairy regions across Australia who had previously taken part in the Picasso Cows program, were invited to give their much loved cows a spruce up, competing for the ultimate honour of being crowned the National Champion. As well as redecorating, the students documented their experience from start to finish in a learning journal, which we submitted for judging as part of the new national competition. We thank the girls from grade six who helped lead this program and a huge congratulations to art teacher, Belinda Goff, for her resilience and creative leadership with this undertaking. Mootritious will remain a permanent member of our school community and will be a valuable teaching aid for educating future students about Australia’s Legendairy industry in years to come. If you haven’t seen her new ‘look’ in the flesh, you’ll find her moo-ving around the Primary Office, so be sure to keep an eye out!

RACV Energy Breakthrough HPV Event This Thursday, 19th November, the Kyabram P-12 College Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) team will be heading to Maryborough to take part again in the RACV Energy Breakthrough. We're all very excited and have been very busy preparing for it. There are two teachers, eight students and several support crew travelling to the event. The team will take part in a rigorous scrutineering process to check the vehicle and riders in order to take part in the race. They will also have to do a presentation to a panel of judges, and take part in a night practice session on Friday. Once all of this has been completed, then they will join over one hundred other vehicles and teams on the track and complete the 24 hour endurance race, which runs from 1pm Saturday until 1pm Sunday. If you would like to know more information, feel free to contact the college and check out this week's Kyabram Free Press or www.racvenergybreakthrough.net. Maryborough is just a little west of Bendigo, so if you have some spare time on the weekend, please come along and show this fantastic team some support! If you see any of the following team members around, wish them luck as they take part in what is definitely an epic experience next week: Josh and Tim Noonan; Brodie Mulcahy; Chris Walsh; James Thompson; Branden Hobbs; Kyle Kydd; and Ryley Cowley. Go Ky Bandits!!!
