PRINCIPAL’S REPORT WALKATHON 2017 The success of the WALKATHON is due to the enthusiasm of the students and the support of their families. Thank you to the P & C for working with our teachers to organise this event. There are great prizes to be won so remember to return your sponsorship cards and envelopes to the office.

Kindergarten 2018 – we will see you soon! Kindergarten Orientation sessions were a great success this year. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who came along. Our P&C committee members generously donated their time each week to also welcome our new parents. At their final session, Stage 3 students farewelled new kindergartens with a PNPS book, balloon and a smile. Kindergarten 2018 students, we look forward to seeing you again soon! Thank you to all the staff, students and performance groups who were involved and to Mrs Murdoch, Ms Roser and the kindergarten teachers for all your hard work.

SRC School Discos K- 4 Our students moved to the beat and danced the afternoon away at the SRC discos held during Week 5. Congratulations to the SRC who hosted theses successful events. A special thank you to Ms Lance and Mrs Eltakchi for coordinating the 2017 discos. The SRC should be extremely proud of their efforts as over $900 was raised. Watch this space for the SRC report in our next edition as I understand they are planning to purchase something exciting for our playground.

Student Support @ PNPS Students don't have to be school captains or house captains to be considered leaders. We encourage our students to be leaders in the classroom and playground, through their support for other students, or their involvement in academic, sporting, cultural or community events and projects. Year 6 students have trained to become Student Support leaders. They meet with their small groups of students each week to discuss values and will lead their groups through games and activities to reinforce these messages. Year 5 students are co-leaders and support the Year 6 students. Congratulations to our 2017 Student Support Leaders and Co-Leaders - the students in K-4 really look forward to their time with the seniors every Thursday - leaders, you have made a difference!

Stage 3 Safety Sessions Stage 3 students were attentive, respectful and reflective during Senior Constable Liplyn’s safety presentation. The school works in collaboration with the Parramatta Police Youth Liaison Officers to reinforce aspects of the curriculum. We encourage parents to continue working with our teachers as we educate and inform students to become safe citizens of the future.

BULLYING AND CYBER-BULLYING:S3 Student Recount

Today as any other day was normal, until I saw it, the blue and white car, and as he was walking down the court I knew that I was going to have a fun time. As the Senior Constable entered our classroom I was excited for our lesson talking about Bullying and Cyber-Bullying. I was quite surprised at how long you can stay in jail for just hitting someone, up to two years!! And if that happens at school, that sentence can increase up to 5 years. As he finished the lesson I started thinking, mmm, maybe I can be a cop?

School Policy and Procedure Updates All schools are required to follow rules and procedures for the smooth day to day running of school matters and to ensure our students are receiving a quality education in a safe environment. Policies help define rules, procedures and protocols for schools. You may access all of this information through our school website. I encourage you to read the policies and procedures we follow. Recent updated policies include PNPS Attendance, Protecting and Supporting Children and Young People, Student Discipline in Government Schools and Working with Children Check Policies and Procedures. Regular updates and reminders are incorporated into this fortnightly newsletter and discussed at P & C meetings.

School Attendance and Absences School hours are from 8.30am to 3.00pm with lessons beginning at 9:00am. All students are expected to attend on time every day that school is open unless they are sick. Regular attendance is essential to ensure a consistent learning program and good progress. Please access the link below providing information for parents and carers about the importance of regular attendance. This has been translated into several community languages too.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2018 If your child turns five before July 31, 2018, they are eligible to enrol for Kindergarten next year. Please contact the school office for an enrolment form. Mrs Kathryn Methven Principal School Uniforms A reminder to all families that we have transitioned to Summer Uniform to commence Term 4. Please support our School’s Uniform Policy by ensuring your child is wearing their correct school uniform.

Voluntary School Contributions It’s not too late to make a payment for Voluntary School Contributions. Payment is $30 for one child, $50 for two children or $60 for three or more children. This money goes towards resources for your child’s education. Payment can be made in cash at the school office or via our school’s website through the Make a Payment tab. We have a few students who are allergic to nuts

and one student who is highly allergic, which could be life threatening.

Please Do Not put Peanut Butter or Nutella on your child's sandwiches or send nuts to

school

Absence from School If your child has been absent from school due to sickness etc, please write a note to your child’s class teacher stating the date and reason for the absence. It is a Department requirement that all absences from school are explained. The School App also has an Absent Note function.

Isabella KR Lauren 6/5B

Remember to look out for the problem of the week in every newsletter. Problems will vary in the degree of difficulty from week to week. Write your answer with your name and class on a piece of paper. Place this in the ‘Problem of the Week’ box located in the office by 3pm on the following Wednesday. The first correct answers drawn out of the box for K-2 and 3-6 will be our Problem Solving Award Recipients. Be sure to include your working on your answer sheet. Good luck everyone!

Problem K-2 There were 3 marbles on a table. 2 rolled off onto the floor. What fraction of the marbles were left on the table?

Use a forward slash ( / ) to separate the numerator and denominator.

Problem 3-6 Tim and his friends are ordering a pizza. They want one vegetable topping and one meat topping. The vegetable toppings are broccoli, onions, mushrooms and olives. The meat toppings are pepperoni, chicken, mince and salami. Given these choices, how many different combinations can Tim and his friends create?

Student Sunglasses for Sale As part of a P & C initiative, we are selling sunglasses. We take sun safety seriously and implement a range of strategies to protect our students from the damaging effects of the sun. We promote, ‘HAT ON PLAY ON’ and encourage the students to wear sunscreen. During the warmer months the P & C will be providing sunscreen for all classes. The children’s sunglasses can be purchased from the office for $10.
