TERM 4 ISSUE 19

Page 2: Term 4 4

Once again our mammoth production is ready to entertain a positive audience. We hope to see everyone at the Christian Family Centre next Wednesday (December 11th). It is important to consider the following points: The current forecast for next Wednesday is 20°! Hopefully it

won’t warm up too much! Smoking is not permitted on the CFC property. Parents

cannot smoke outside the building or, in the carpark. Parents choosing to check on their children during the

performance just add to the chaos and disruption in the back hall. Last year it resulted in students being late on stage. Please enjoy the performance and just collect your child at the end of the show.

We ask that families enjoy the whole performance so that our older students have a ‘full house’ to appreciate their hard work and effort.

Don’t forget the other smaller band performing on the same night is Bon Jovi at Football Park. We don’t know what impact this might have on traffic around the CFC. Please consider arriving early.

Students arrive at 6:30pm and then enter the back hall. Staff supervision commences at this point. (All students have been shown where to meet.)

Students have also been told what they can take into the hall.(A drink bottle of water is important).

Auditorium doors open at 6:40pm. Food or drink cannot be taken into the auditorium. All KPPS students stay in the back hall. It is not fair if a few

students are collected and taken into the auditorium to watch the performance.

Governing Council members act as ushers on the night. At the end of the performance just one parent collects a

student from the back hall. We have just 40 balcony tickets still available. Please

collect your tickets ASAP. DVDs are still available for purchase. Money and forms

must be sent to the front office by 9am Tuesday. Permission forms should have been returned for your child

to travel by bus or vehicle to rehearsals either next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Kidman Celebrates 2013 is a fast paced variety show. Congratulations to our staff, students and Kayla Kearney our choreographer for a number of items. We also thank the parents and family members who have assisted in many ways to make Kidman Celebrates a memorable experience for our students.

Why do we do it? So that our students have an opportunity to

experience the performing arts and get to share what has

been learnt in a professional environment to an appreciative

audience. Besides performing skills an event like this builds

confidence, self-esteem and of course is a great way to end

the school year! Congratulations everyone.

Today, change is a regular part of our lives, a door closing means that another can open and thus create new and exciting challenges.

In 2013 we took on many new challenges at KPPS some were successful whilst a few didn’t meet our expectations. In 2014 our aim is to build on the foundations that we started to develop this year. Our goal is to continue the journey to ensure KPPS is a dynamic and innovative learning environment for our school.

If a new principal had been appointed to the school for 2014 then we would be preparing for change. Instead, I was reappointed, that means support for current programs and procedures and the general direction our school is heading. But, it doesn’t mean (as principal) I can relax and put my feet up. In 2014 we need to combine our passion and energy to continue to develop and grow our great school. I am looking forward to new adventures and excitement as we strengthen our community and become inspired to build on the strengths of our great school.

Enjoy the summer vacation. I look forward to working with our community in 2014.

John Clarke Principal

Thankyou to our 2014 student leaders for providing a variety of activities, events and support to our student body in 2013. We hope that Kayla, Tilly, Daniel and Nathan have enjoyed the experience and further use their leadership skills and abilities at both high school and in the wider community.

We welcome community members to use our grounds during

the holidays. It assists with security. If you see any

inappropriate behaviour at school or, vandalism, please

report it to the police on 131444. Don’t hesitate calling. Your

call might be enough to stop significant damage to our

school.

Once again we have a large number of families who have

completed their time at KPPS on Friday! We hope that all

families leaving our community have enjoyed their

association with our school. Thankyou for your contributions

and best wishes for the future.

Party Day is Thursday next week! Subway orders close at 1pm Monday. No late orders will be accepted at the school. They will have to be hand delivered to Subway.

PAULINE MCCARTHY: For most of us, Pauline has been our Art and English as a Second Language teacher for the last 5 years but Pauline arrived in 2000 to run our South Asian Village program. ‘The Village’ was a unique program; there was nothing else like it in Australia. Every day Pauline and her specially trained staff ran a unique program that annually provided the opportunity for over 5,000 South Australian students to practically experience life in a South Asian village. Some of our community would have remembered building the mud brick houses many years ago. The Village was a partnership with Global Education. Pauline was made a life member of their association and, in ‘The Village’, entertained, politicians, celebrities and numerous special guests. We even had Jane Reilly arrive by helicopter for a visit! Pauline created an environment where the program became an integral of the school with our students engaged in the maintenance of the garden beds, buildings and set up of the program. This award winning program only stopped when it became a financial burden to the school. The closure of ‘The Village’ meant Pauline needed a new job and that’s where we utilised her skills as an exhibiting artist. We have been proud of the growth of our students’ artistic skills, our outstanding art exhibitions (that have been copied by other schools) and of course, the artwork displayed around our school. If you participated in a KPPS Open Morning then chances are, you were intrigued by the stories and linking of art to history and global understanding as Pauline explained how she teaches art. Pauline’s contributions to our school have been unique and we thank her for the difference she has made to the learning of our students. We wish Pauline the very best in her next life adventures.

ALINA JELONEK – Alina thinks she just quietly works in a back room of our school! Starting way back in 1991 Alina provided classroom support and then office support. Around 12 years ago she then ‘stepped up’ to be Administration Manager.

This quickly catapulted her into the ‘backbone’ role of our school. Especially to her functions of working with staff, parents, students, support agencies and service providers. Alina has done it all, and due to that, has evolved into being the ‘local guru’. If any other school admin officer has had a question, then they call Alina!

Our school employs 27 support staff. It is Alina who provides their support, ensures everyone is paid and generally deals with the mess created by other agencies. Annually our auditors provide glowing feedback of the financial procedures maintained at our school by Alina. Sometimes we don’t know how Alina fits it all in as her office has a revolving door of people wanting advice, direction support and feedback in relation to a diverse range of issues.

Our school is successful and organised due to the skills,

knowledge and experience of Alina. It will be very different

here in 2014. We hope that Alina enjoys the next chapter in

her life and continues along an exciting and social journey.

SUPPORTING OUTSTANDING EDUCATION AT KPPS!

KARALYN JONES – We thank Karalyn for her contribution as our ICT coordinator for the last two years. Karalyn has contributed to our ICT journey, led our involvement in the Microsoft ‘Partners in Learning’ program and the development of 21st Century skills at KPPS. In 2014 Karalyn takes on a new challenge at the Open Access College.

ALEX STOJANOVIC – A special thankyou to Alex for setting up a creative, fun and interesting learning environment for our ‘brand new’ reception students in terms three and four. P4 has been colourful and fun place to visit with students happily engaged in their first year of schooling. We appreciate Alex’s dedication and enthusiasm to positively support our students.

THUI BUI – We have been very lucky to have Thui available to quickly fill the vacancy created by Marina Lekkas pushing the boundaries at sports day. We have appreciated Thui’s flexibility, her willingness to collaborate and plan with Marina and most importantly, ensure continuity of learning for our students in U6.

CHRISTINE SCHEER – We thank Christine for her support in our library this term. Christine has provided opportunities for Lois to do a massive stocktake of our resources, supported Resource Based Learning with classes and assisted with our JP literacy programs. We appreciate Christine’s support.

SSO CHANGES

SSOs are a vital part of a school community. They are the

team that often build closer relationships with students and

thus, have the opportunity to provide counselling and support

that is not always possible by a classroom teacher. Regretfully,

we say thankyou and farewell to the following team of SSO’s :

Thankyou to this dynamic team for the dedication, enthusiasm

and passion for supporting our students. Your contributions

have been appreciated.

2014 CLASSES – What’s happening?

Class placement letters will be sent home Thursday next week. To meet community needs and to try a different approach to support school programs and ultimately student learning outcomes we have created a slightly different structure for 2014. The new single intake of reception students also helps our planning and structure. Once again we have said ‘no’ to a number of enrolment requests from outside our ‘Priority Enrolment Zone’.

Many hours have been spent trying to get a good balance across all classes. It is important to remember that parents cannot request or ‘demand’ specific teachers (or not have teachers). In our changing world we have had new students arrive, students leave, students return and we know there are still potential changes that might occur in 2014.

Students will have an opportunity to visit their new class at the end of next week. It isn’t helpful if parents wait around at school until this happens.

If there is a significant issue with the placement of your child in 2014 then the only process to follow is the following: 1. Collect a form from the front office 2. Return the form by 2:10pm Friday to the front office 3. All requests will be considered from Tuesday

December 17th.

We will make contact from this date. As a part of the process we look for clear swaps from the requests presented. Consideration still needs to be given to friendship groups for other students, balanced classes and requests from other families suggesting certain students should not be placed together. CURRENT 2014 CLASSES – A number of changes have been made for 2014. Some teachers are still dependent on staffing approval. The following does not take into consideration other school responsibilities and part-time status. A key component of our planning is to develop strong staff curriculum teams for planning, unit development and consistency in teaching across all classrooms. OSHC NEWS

At Kidman Park PS OSHC this Christmas we would like to give to those less fortunate. We would like to ask our participants and families to make a $1 donation, which will allow us to purchase a gift for the Kmart Wishing Tree for a child who is less fortunate. Once we have collected all the donations we will work together to choose a gift to give to a child in order to make her/his Christmas a little bit brighter. Thanks for helping make a difference. INCREASE IN FEES Our Out of School Hours Care is a non-profit business owned by Governing Council and the fees that we receive are all used to run the KPPS OSHC Program. We have always endeavoured to keep our fees as low as possible and will continue to do so. However even with small changes in fees made this year the service is not covering expenses sufficiently to run a quality program while covering staff wages and other operating expenses. Therefore, in order to continue to provide our high quality level of care, our Governing Council has approved an increase in fees effective week 1, Term 1, 2014. Our new fees will be as follows: FEES PER SESSION

It is important to highlight that the Child Care Benefit and Rebates apply to the total cost of every session. EXCURSIONS KPPS – VAC CARE will be going on an excursion to the Aviation Museum on Friday 20/12/2013, where children will have opportunity to sit in the cabin of the Dakota C47 and behind the controls of the Aero Commander. Also jump in the back of the Wessex Helicopter. Cost per child is $ 20.

KPPS – VAC CARE will be going on an excursion to the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre on Friday 17/1/2014 where children will have an opportunity to swim in wide variety of pools, ride the exciting water slides and play in the splash pool. Cost per child is $20. LAST NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR It is hard to believe that our year is about to finish. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have contributed to the operation of our Service in 2013. Admin staff, educators, volunteers, members of the Management Committee and Governing Council, parents, teachers, children, etc, etc, have all made possible that we can offer our service to the community. I wish you all a safe Christmas and a terrific 2014.

KANGA CRICKET

A quick update as to how the boys are going so far with Kanga Cricket: Season to date the boys are undefeated and really playing well as a group. We’ve seen some strong improvements in their teamwork and in particular their running between wickets which is drawing high praise from the other club coaches. As a team the boys are working together really well and enjoying helping each other improve each other’s game. Week 2: KPPS 417 v Henley Beach 271. Sean 48 runs, Stirling 35 runs. Charlie 3/10, Sam 3/19. A great run-out by Matthew. Week 3: KPPS 347 v Star of the Sea 272. Stirling 28 runs, Charlie 21 runs, Tyson 13 runs. Sean 2/0, Daniel 1/12. A great catch by Tate. Week 4: KPPS337 v Nazareth 300. Sean 34 runs, Tyson 26 runs, Matthew 6 runs, Daniel 9 runs,

Tate 6 runs. Stirling 2/4. A wonderful catch by Sam.

On Sunday 1st December I competed in the State Relay Championships at Santos Stadium. This competition is a team event for both track and field. I represented my club, Woodville Little Ath-letics, in the field events of shot put and high jump and my team mate Kate did the discus and long jump. Our combined score of 90 points won us the gold medal in the state for under 10 girls. Last year

we won the silver medal in the same competition. So we are very proud of our achievement this year. By Carla Room 12.

Dear Parents and Carers, If you are considering becoming a part of the Governing Council but not sure of the commitment required, or whether 'it is your thing', we're trying something new next year.

The 2013 council is meeting on the 6th of February 2014 (Thursday of week 2) with an open invitation for anyone considering joining to come along and meet the committee, ask questions, and find out what the role of Governing Council is all about prior to the AGM. We'll have some wine and nibbles on the night to help keep it informal.

The AGM will be held straight after Acquaintance Night so you can decide after attending the week 2 meeting if it is really is for you or not. A bit like the 'try before you buy' concept! Keep a look out for more information early next term, and also the information in this newsletter. Have a great break and a very Merry Christmas.

From 2013 Governing Council.

こんにちはKonnichiwa,

Did you know that last week almost every student had the

chance to make おにぎりonigiri in our lessons?

おにぎりOnigiri are the Japanese version of a sandwich –

filled with tasty savoury foods and ideal to take on picnics. Ask your child what some of the popular Japanese fillings are –

some are not to my taste! Maybe you could make おにぎりonigiri in the summer holidays! Here are some of the successful おにぎりonigiri that our

wonderful students made ……

Pauline McCarthy

Ms Pauline has been the Art NIT teacher and the ESL Coordinator

at Kidman Park for 12 years, starting in 2001, but sadly she is

leaving Kidman Park for retirement.

Before she came to Kidman Park, she played in multiple bands,

worked part-time in theatres and played cricket. She enjoys

travelling, and has been to many exotic places such as

Afghanistan, East Timor, Spain and Tibet.

She also spent some time in the South-Asian village. She used one

of the houses as a storage room, with a stove which she often

used to cook.

As a child, Pauline attended Elizabeth North Primary and Elizabeth

High School. She has been an art teacher at this school for merely

5 or 6 years, but she has been an artist for most of her life.

Pauline adores teaching ESL, because the kids come with

enthusiasm and richness from their backgrounds, and they form

groups to help each other

and interact.

Her best moments at Kidman

Park were teaching the

students and, of course,

Kidman Park’s very own Art

Exhibition. She especially liked

this year’s Exhibition, which

was hosted by Nova 91.9’s

very own Dylan Lewis from

the Lewis and Lowe morning

show.

ANNIE Y and OLIVA R interviewed Pauline and Alina on their careers . . . .

Alina Jelonek

Alina Jelonek has been working at KPPS for over 20 years now,

starting in 1991, first as Secretary to the principal and her children

also used to attend KPPS. She has been part of many activities in

the Kidman park community, such as judging KPPS MasterChef as

Gary Mehigan, and working in various classrooms.

Alina attended St Aloysius and her long time ambition was to get

a Diploma in Teaching. But then when that dream came true,

she had to wait for mid-year intake, as she was only 16 years old.

After getting married and having her now grown-up children, she

was again, very fortunate to get part time work as teacher aide

at Seaton North Primary School. It came to the time when Seaton

North Primary had to close. She got new occupations, in charge

of financing and administrative work.

Then her teaching career led her to Kidman Park Primary, where

she began as a part-time teacher’s aide in the younger classes.

She then moved up as secretary. Throughout her career she

worked with three principals: Peter Hansberry, Meryl Davidson

and now our current school principal, John Clarke. In 2003 she

completed a Diploma in Government and Cert IV in Finance and

was appointed to Admin/Finance Manager.
