PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to week 9!
A huge thank you to staff this week on the effort
and time you are putting in to ensure all students are
ready and able to access learning from wherever
they may be. Your child’s teachers will be in touch
as to how they are providing units of work and due
dates/collection of work.
Students will receive either by mail or directly if
they are at school today a letter to explain the
Department of Education’s most recent advice for
families.
All non-essential gatherings for staff on school site
will cease as of today until we are provided
information to the contrary. Examples of this would
include primary assemblies, extended staff
meetings, professional learning face-to-face events.
This will not disadvantage students.
Parents
We understand that this is a challenging and
worrying time for your children, please take the
time to speak with and reassure your child. Please
see the following information that may be helpful
for you in doing this.
https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/coronavirus-how-
talk-child.html
Find Out What Your Child Already Knows
Ask questions geared to your child's age
level. For older kids, you might ask, "Are people in
school talking about coronavirus? What are they
saying?" For younger children, you could say,
"Have you heard grownups talking about a new
sickness that's going around?" This gives you a
chance to learn how much kids know — and to find
out if they are hearing the wrong information.
Follow your child's lead. Some kids may want to
spend time talking. However, if your kids do not
seem interested or do not ask a lot of questions,
that's OK.
Offer Comfort — and Honesty.
Focus on helping your child feel safe, but be
truthful. Do not offer more detail than your child is
interested in. For example, if kids ask about school
closings, address their questions. But if the topic
doesn't come up, there's no need to raise it unless it
happens.
If your child asks about something and you don't
know the answer, say so. Use the question as a
chance to find out together. Check the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for
up-to-date, reliable information about coronavirus
(COVID-19). That way, you have the facts and kids
do not see headlines about deaths and other scary
information.
Speak calmly and reassuringly. Explain that most
people who get sick feel like they have a cold or the
flu. Kids pick up on it when parents worry. So when
you talk about coronavirus and the news, use a calm
voice and try not to seem upset.
Give kids space to share their fears. It is natural
for kids to worry, "Could I be next? Could that
happen to me?" Let your child know that kids do
not seem to get as sick as adults do. Let them know
they can always come to you for answers or to talk
about what scares them.
Know when they need guidance. Be aware of how
your kids get news and information, especially older
kids who go online. Point them to age-appropriate
content so they do not end up finding news shows
or outlets that scare them or have incorrect
information.
Help Kids Feel in Control
Give your child specific things they can do to feel
in control. Teach kids that getting lots of sleep
and washing their hands well and often, can help
them stay strong and well. Explain that regular hand
washing also helps stop viruses from spreading to
others. Be a good role model and let your kids see
you washing your hands often!
Talk about all the things that are happening to
keep people safe and healthy. Young kids might
be reassured to know that hospitals and doctors are
prepared to treat people who get sick. Older kids
might be comforted to know that scientists are
working to develop a vaccine. These talks
also prepare kids for changes in their normal routine
if schools or childcare centres close in the future.
Put news stories in context. If they ask, explain
that death from the virus is still rare, despite what
TERM 1 2020– WEEK 9
Page | 3
they might hear. Watch the news with your kids so
you can filter what they hear.
Kids and teens often worry more about family
and friends than themselves. For example, if kids
hear that older people are more likely to be
seriously ill, they might worry about their
grandparents. Letting them call or Skype with older
relatives can help them feel reassured about loved
ones.
Let your kids know that it is normal to feel
stressed out at times. Everyone does. Recognizing
these feelings and knowing that stressful times pass
and life gets back to normal can help children build
resilience.
Keep the Conversation Going
Keep checking in with your child. Use talking
about coronavirus as a way to help kids learn about
their bodies, like how the immune system fights off
disease.
Talk about current events with your kids
often. It is important to help them think through
stories they hear about. Ask questions: What do you
think about these events? How do you think these
things happen? Such questions also encourage
conversation about non-news topics.

Year 3/4
Hi Everyone,
Just letting you all know that I have arranged work
packages that will go out to students today. Included
in these packages will be instructions on what to do
and when, as well as drop off and picking up
information, so the students can receive new work
and other work can be collected and marked.
Students have received homework this week and I
encourage those who have it to finish it. Please refer
to the homework grid glued in the front of their
homework books for the set tasks that need to be
completed. This week we are focusing on the 5xs
tables for Year 3 and 8xs tables for the Year 4
students. Mathletics activities to be completed are
on Patterns and Algebra and Chance. Students
Mathletics usernames and passwords have been
glued in their homework books.
Mathletics is a part of our weekly routine and I
encourage students to complete as many activities
on here as they can over the time they are at home.
I have also had students paste into their homework
books their typing club user names and passwords.
They should continue to work through these tasks
when they can.
I will be contacting the students via their school
emails daily
If you have questions or concerns please contact me
via the school office.
Thank you.

Year 5/6 Online Learning Year 5/6 will be utilising both Google Classroom
and workbooks in order to continue to our learning
journey from home. I will be posting daily tasks and
assignments and giving due dates for every task. We
have been learning a lot about Google Classroom,
Google Docs and Google Slides over the past term.
Students are familiar with this learning platform and
have been using it regularly both in class and for
homework. I will be uploading daily videos,
YouTube clips, and links to assist in learning.
Research tasks and assignments will also be added
as the week progresses. Please check our Google
Classroom regularly and keep your LSCWC,
Spelling Conventions, Maths Plus book and red
workbook in your school bag. Only take out it out
when completing tasks.
It would be great if you could return all books by
Friday 3rd April for marking. If not we can make
other arrangements. Please read the introduction
letter on Google Classroom and contact the school
if you have any questions. Encourage your children
to read, help with the housework, cook with you,
play board games, keep active in your back yards or
on the farm and help out where possible.
This is a new and exciting platform and I am
looking forward to learning with you all!

SECONDARY NEWS
Welcome to Week 9.
A reminder to students - As the COVID 19
situation develops, students are reminded to be
mindful of others. Please ensure that you are
practicing sound hygiene and ensure that you are
not participating in behaviours that cause angst to
both your classmates and to younger students.
Parents, please ensure that you return the slip from
the letter, which has been handed to any students
who were at school today. All other letters have
been posted out in the mail today.
Excursion Cancellations A number of sporting excursions have been
cancelled or postponed. Students, Parents and Care
providers are asked to check the newsletter and
Facebook page for updates on scheduled excursions
and activities.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students have been participating in different sports
to start the year. They have been participating in
basketball, league tag, tennis and they have started a
unit of athletics in javelin.
As a whole, the group has been enthusiastic and
willing to participate.
SPORT, LIFESTYLE and RECREATION
Students have been working on lifestyle factors.
They have just completed an assessment task on the
topic and it was pleasing to see the amount of effort
applied in these tasks.
In practical lessons, they have been playing a
number of modified sports showing a sufficient skill
level.

SLR and PE Secondary Teacher
YEARS 7/8 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT AND
HEALTH
In Stage 4 Physical Development and Health,
students have been analysing risks in a range of
situations. They have examined how these risks
affect their health and wellbeing and are gaining an
understanding of how they can reduce the impact of
these on their lives. They are currently completing
an assessment task based on the risks associated
with sun exposure.
YEARS 9/10 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
AND HEALTH
In Stage 5 Physical Development and Health,
students have been gaining an understanding of
their personal strengths and how they can use these
to benefit themselves. Students have also been
shifting their thoughts to see challenges as
opportunities for growth and learning. Students are
currently completing an assessment task where they
will reflect on their own strengths and aim towards
utilising these in their future endeavours.
YEARS 9/10 PASS
Students studying Stage 5 Physical Activity and
Sports Studies have had a focus on Outdoor
Recreation this term. In this topic students learn
about the types of outdoor recreation available and
develop an understanding of the skills and
knowledge needed. Usually, at the end of the topic
we would go on an overnight hike to allow students
to demonstrate these skills. This may still occur, but
it will be later in the year.

AGRICULTURE IN ACTION
Wanted – Cans & Bottles
As part of our fundraising for the Agriculture
program, we will be collecting the 10c return cans
and bottles. No need to sort them, as we will do
this! Cans and bottles can be dropped in to the
Agriculture plot area where there are two bins
labelled Cans and Plastic Bottles and Glass Bottles.
Show Team Practices Due to the escalation of the COVID 19 situation, all
cattle show team practices are cancelled until
otherwise advised. This is disappointing for our
students; however, it is necessary to enable the
situation to be brought under control.
Mr Davison and Miss Shankelton would like to
congratulate our students on their efforts so far with
the cattle - they look amazing and once shows are
back on deck and students are able to attend it will
not take much to make our cattle show ready.
Natasha Shankelton
Agriculture Teacher
SPORT
All sporting events cancelled until further notice.
Cassie Hinchley
