Happy Father’s Day! We hope all fathers, grandfathers and other significant males in the lives of our students had a very happy Father’s Day. Thank you to all the dads, grandads, uncles and special friends who shared a meat pie or a quiche with their children last Thursday morning. Once again, the P&C provided our school with an invaluable opportunity for families to connect with each other while investing in quality time with their children. And what a great way to start the day with a meat pie and tomato sauce. Yum! Of course our bands and choir groups once again entertained us with great enthusiasm and talent. Thank you to Matt the Hat (Band Director) and Mrs Kylie Clift (Choir Teacher) for providing our students with this opportunity to shine. Father’s Day is also a great reminder of the important role father’s play in enhancing the wellbeing and mental health of their children. Children thrive and flourish on feelings of affection that come from caring and supportive families. There is no ‘right’ way to be a father but we do know that fathers being involved in their child’s life through school can benefit both their own and their child’s wellbeing. The ‘Be You’ fact sheet Engaging Fathers explores this topic in more detail.

Our fabulous P&C volunteers, who, without them, the day would not have been possible. Thank you!

Responsible Pet Education Program for K-2 students As part of the Safe Living component of the PDHPE syllabus, K-2 students learnt about responsible pet ownership and safe behaviour around dogs. Charlie, the Cavalier, was an obliging participant in this program and certainly won the hearts of staff and children alike. Thank you to Mrs Tanya Fitzgerald for organising this incursion. The children were involved in role playing, and demonstrating how to approach a strange dog safely while understanding and responding to the dog’s behaviours appropriately.

Meet Nellie, our local Guide Dog in Training! You may notice beautiful Nellie in our school playground most afternoons. She is a guide dog in training, and is learning the important skills of supporting people with disabilities. While we don’t encourage family pets on school grounds, we are very happy to support this important socialisation stage of Nellie’s training. Good luck Nellie!

NSW Department of Education’s Enrolment Policy Attached to this newsletter is a fact sheet for parents with the details of the Department’s new enrolment policy. The changes affect families seeking out of area enrolments. The school’s enrolment committee will be in touch with families who have made out of area applications shortly.

A lot can happen overnight! I’m sure you have all noticed the dramatic improvement to what we can now proudly call the native bird habitat at Asquith Public School. Thanks to the persistence and determination of our Enviro Hub and representative school staff, there has been a dramatic transformation to this garden area located in front of the Library. The tranquillity and natural beauty of this space is now inspiring some plans to create a quiet area for staff and parent groups seeking an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful surroundings. Come along to the P&C Working Bee on Sunday, 15 September to enjoy planting some native ground cover and enhance the beauty of this area even more.

Stage 3 Camp at Milson Island We farewelled a very excited group of Stage 3 students and their teachers on Monday morning as they departed for their two night camp at Milson Island. This camp provides the children with the invaluable opportunity to learn, connect with others and develop resilience outside of the four walls of the classroom. Thank you to all the parents for ensuring everything was packed and that there children were so well-prepared for this experience. A massive thank you to Ms Jane Crawford for organising this camp, along with Mrs Bronwynne Lewis, Mr Martin O’Brien, Mrs Joanne Elmes, Mrs Chloe Roger and Ms Madeline Fletcher. This camp would not be able to happen without the tremendous support of these teachers who have spent time away with their own families to ensure the children have this memorable experience. In saying that, all teachers told me how they excited they were to go on camp as well!

LEARNING SUPPORT NEWS

COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Education for your child is important and regular school attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. If a student misses as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of primary school, they’ll have missed over a year of school. Following an absence from school, parents and carers must ensure they provide the school with a written or verbal explanation. Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. If your child is late to school, a parent must escort them to the office to explain the reason for their lateness. If you are having difficulties with getting your child to attend school or arrive on time, you should contact the school and discuss the issues and ask for help. Further information on Compulsory School Attendance can be found at https://education.nsw.gov.au/student-wellbeing/attendance-behaviour-and-engagement/school-attendance
