Excursions

What a great idea it is to go to Canberra in the middle of winter!

Students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and it was amazing to see them keep on going the whole time we were there, except for after 10:30 at night of course.

Day one started with Mrs Wilson finding her dream home at Cockington Green, a ramble in the countryside at the Arboretum and finding fruit that smelt like vomit (Gingko) and continued with students finding out how to vote and that our Federal member is actually the Deputy Prime Minister. The night concluded with a visit to iPlay where the year 9 boys discovered that for an old man, Mr Quince was still the master of strategy in Lazer Tag.

Tuesday saw a tour of the ANU, Questacon, the feature being the vertical drop, the National Library where Libby was almost sucked up a pipe and the rest of us attacked by book carrying robots, then off to Parliament House where again we learned that our Federal Member of Parliament, Mr Michael McCormack is the Deputy Prime Minister, then off to Mount Stromlo observatory where we saw a Nobel Prize, lifted a 250 kg meteorite (not really well), and investigated the qualities that make a ‘Clean Room’. Sorry parents, I don’t think they took on the lesson very well.

The National Museum had us enthralled with Box Brownies (no Miss Harris, you cannot eat them) and a 3D reality experience of Antartica, a birthday celebration for Leilani, then off to the Art Gallery where we had a very expensive piece of graffiti explained to us. The

National Film and Sound Archive offered a chance to reflect on how Australians were depicted at war in the media.

Again the students lost to Mr Quince at 10 Pin Bowling, though as Thomas Unger will protest, he did have the bumpers up!

On Thursday we were blown away at Telstra (Black Mountain) Tower, toured the War Memorial, and had an interactive experience at the Australian Institute of Sport where Bailey was perhaps too interactive at SportEx and found an immersive experience at Calvary Hospital a fitting way to keep a foot in Canberra for a little while longer.

Would we do it again? Of course we will! We had a great time.

PCS is hosting a Book Fair in Week 5 this term. The fair will begin on Monday 26 August 2019 and conclude on Thursday 29 August 2019. All book orders need to be placed with Miss Barrass by 3pm on Friday 30 August 2019.

Students will be given an opportunity to look through the books in class with Miss Barrass, or at lunchtimes in the hall foyer. They will be able to create a wish-list of books they would like to purchase and take this home to show their parents. If students want to purchase books, they can bring their parent to the Hall Foyer at the end of the day to see Miss Barrass and place an order.

On Monday 26 August 2019, our school will be hosting a dress-up day to begin the Book Fair. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Please remember to bring a gold coin donation. The proceeds of this donation will go towards buying more books for our school Library.

If you have any questions, please call in and see Miss Barrass or phone the school office.

High School News

Northparkes Mine VisitOur Senior students spent the day getting some insight into life beyond school and opportunities that are available in our local community. Northparkes Mines were very accomodating to our students allowing them a behind the scenes look at their operations. Key members from their team including; Roslyn Dalton (Manager Ore Processing), Stacey Kelly

(Manager People, Safety and Environment), Brooke Plunkett (Organisational Development Specialist) and Michelle Rowe (Training Advisor) took time to give our students insight into career opportunities, business culture, finance and recruitment tips as well as a tour of the site.

Our students found this time invaluable both for considering their futures and to use as a case study in their Business Studies exams coming up soon.

Students were also treated to lunch with key people from a range of departments where they were able to ask questions about working at Northparkes.

We also ran into some familiar faces including past student, Ashley Evans who is currently completing a Business Administration Traineeship in the Ore Processing Department and Mr Muller who was excited to see PCS!

We can’t thank to whole team enough for this great experience.
