PRO-ACTIVE PROGRAMS TEACH IMPORTANT SOCIAL SKILLS This term, Chloe and Mr Southgate are working with students in Years 3 and 4 to introduce and consolidate important social skills. Chloe is implementing ‘Girls’ Group’ in Year 3, where girls are able to explore issues such as friendship, personal strength, finding a voice and working together. Meanwhile, Mr Southgate is leading the boys through the highly successful ‘Rock and Water’ program, which is designed to help boys understand respectful ways of relating to others, personal power and building trust. Both programs were implemented very successfully at Uki last year, and are proving very beneficial again this year.

SUPER POWERS ON DISPLAY AT UKI We had a lot of fun last week with our superhero / book character parade to celebrate Education Week. There was such a variety of creative ideas on display from all the students and teachers, showing the world that we love reading! Following the parade, we had a special

time reading together with special visitors or friends. A huge thanks goes to Mrs Spiller for organising the event as well as running the book fair. Later in the day, Mrs Trevaskis (aka Indianna Jones), showed that she is truly a superhero when she demonstrated how to crack a whip. Along the way we discovered that this was the answer to the ‘Puzzle Corner’ question from last week’s newsletter, which was, ‘What was the first man-made object to break the sound barrier?’ Answer: a whip. Thanks, Mrs Trevaskis! See inside for more photographs.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Friday started very early for Mrs Mills, Mr Southgate, Mr Williams, Mrs Armour, Chloe, the P&C crew and many other assistants who were preparing the field at Murwillumbah High School for the District Athletics Carnival. It was a stunning day and we are very proud of the effort demonstrated by each and every competitor. Thank you so much to the parents who volunteered their time at the catering tent and helped to pack up. Well done to Mrs Mills and Mr Southgate who organised the whole event! Special congratulations to the athletes who have progressed to the Far North Coast level of competition in Byron Bay later in the month.

WE LOVE SCIENCE! In case you missed the Facebook post, 2K made catapults in Science last week using paddle pop sticks, rubber bands, egg cartons and a ping-pong ball. Apart from having a huge amount of fun, students learnt a lot about the forces of push and pull. Here’s what two students thought of the activity:

OUR EKIDNA PROGRAM BENEFITS EVERYONE The school’s wellbeing program is called the EKIDNA program, which stands for Every KID Now Achieves. The idea is that positive dispositions and behaviours are explicitly taught and acknowledged. One way we acknowledge students who are doing the right thing is with our ‘fast and frequent’ ‘Parade Tickets’ (so named because the collective noun for echidnas is a ‘parade’). Whenever a student is given a Parade Ticket, they put it into a special container. One name from each container is drawn each week at assembly, with the lucky recipient receiving a $1 canteen voucher. Then all the week’s tickets are tipped into a large tub. When the tub is full, everyone in the school has a little treat, such as extra play time or some free time in class. The SRC will meet this week to decide what the reward will be this time, as we filled the tub at last week’s assembly! Well done, everyone!

Bottle Drive and Cake Stall Complete!

Throughout Term 2, Latoya and I from 5/6O completed a

project where we came up with creative ways to raise

enough money to sponsor a child in need. The aim was to

raise $50 a month for two months. We invited the

community to donate bottles for a bottle drive and held a

cake stall at school.

We were very successful with the project and in total

raised more than we expected with $180 in total which

has been donated to World Vision.

Latoya and I would like to thank everyone in the

community who helped us achieve our goal by supporting

our fund raising efforts. Thank you. Gabi - Year 6

DISTRICT ATHLETICS

competition, 7 of our students have successfully advanced

to the Far North Coast Carnival in Byron on the 23rd of

August. Congratulations and good luck to:

Eva (200m) Casey (100m)

Sari (100m) Murry (200m)

Natalia (Long jump) Ryan (Shot Put and Discus)

Ben (Shot Put and High Jump).

SPECIAL SWIMMING SCHEME

Places are filling up fast for our Special Swimming Scheme, which will run for 2 weeks commencing on Monday 26 August. We have 50 places allocated for students travelling in with Mrs Kendrick and Mr Southgate for the 10 day intensive learn to swim training. The purpose is to build swimming skills and water confidence with trained swimming coaches for a 45 minute lesson every day. The target group for this activity is students in Years 2 and 3, but also for non-swimmers in Years 4-6. Every student in Grades 2 and 3 received a note last week, with extra notes made available to interested students in grades 4/5/6.

Please contact the school office for further details or to request a note to be sent home if you would like your child to participate. We will once again cover the cost of the bus travel to and from the pool for this event between the school and our P&C, which makes participation very affordable for families. For 2019, the total cost for participants will only be $37 to cover the pool entry. So get those notes and your payment in quickly to secure one of the final places.

Please fill in the volunteer note that has been in the last newsletters. Any time you can spare is greatly appreciated and a huge benefit for our school community.
