A huge thank you to all of our parents and your children, our students, who were thrown into the challenge of working together at home whilst we were in isolation during Terms 1 and 2.This opportunity launched the staff into setting up a new learning challenge through our online learning platform. What a great success for staff developing new ways of teaching and learning for students through a technological platform. It is of course wonderful to have our students back at school in our classrooms. We are still continuing the learning through technology. I feel we have developed stronger connections with you, our parents in supporting your children’s learning. We will continue to keep “Learning Together” and moving forward at South. Teaching and Learning Tales - Helen McCubbin 1H Mrs McCubbin is a master teacher. Her exemplary ability to mould young minds and hearts into life-long learners makes her the perfect teacher to shine a spotlight on during Education Week 2020. The love Mrs McCubbin has for learning, and for all the little humans in her care, is so strong you can feel it when you step inside her classroom. Mrs McCubbin’s journey at Dubbo South Public School has deep roots. She was born in Dubbo and attended this school as a child. “I have many happy memories from my childhood in this school. It inspires me to create happy memories for my students,” she said. Mrs McCubbin was not immediately drawn to teaching, as she began her professional career as an Occupational Therapist. Mrs McCubbin felt the pull of education after taking a few years out of the workforce to be a mother. “Teaching drew me in. I was fortunate to have had two amazing pre-service mentor teachers, and I wanted to be just like them.” Mrs McCubbin has been weaving learning magic in this school’s classrooms for more than two decades. “I love this school.” While her work is a clearly a labour of love, it is certainly not as easy as Mrs McCubbin makes it look. “Teaching is hard work, but I want to make life better for my students.” “It is precious to observe a child learn how to read or write. I just love it when I hear them say, “I can write. I’m a writer.” It is those moments that make teaching wonderful.” “I can remember as a student being scared of making mistakes. I do not want my students to feel this way. I want them to enjoy all aspects of learning, especially the challenging parts before they realise they have grown.” From the moment her students see Mrs McCubbin and listen to her distinctive voice they stand taller and smile. Mrs McCubbin warmly welcomes all her students into her colourful classroom and moves seamlessly from moments of genuine relationship building, to connecting real world learning opportunities to explicit teaching. The children and her “learn together” as she uses her big heart, mighty intellect and captivating personality to engage her students in building proficiency in their spelling. Her instructions and explanations are crystal clear, while her swift and specific feedback cues

simultaneously encourage and accelerate the students’ learning. Her room is filled to the brim with concentration, care and joy. It is for this reason Mrs McCubbin is a rare gem in our school’s teaching community. Student Voices: Billy Reynen, 7 years old – “Mrs McCubbin helps me learn writing. I like being in her class.” Marley Playsted, 7 years old – “Learning with Mrs McCubbin makes me happy.” Zeek Volivakarua, 6 years old – “Mrs McCubbin has taught me about halves and quarters.” Daniel Herd, 6 years old – “Mrs McCubbin makes it easy for me to learn hard things, like spelling.” Katelynn Manning, 6 years old – “Mrs McCubbin teaches us how to write well.” Kobi Mackie, 7 years old – “Mrs McCubbin is funny. She makes me laugh.”

5/6P Thinking While Moving in Maths 5/6P have been lucky enough to have Miss P come showcase her knowledge and expertise in mathematics and Thinking While Moving in Maths. The students have enjoyed the new educational activities they have learnt and they have quickly started to ask Miss Kent to use them daily. Thank you Miss P, we can’t wait to have you again!

Lost Property Children will inevitably lose or misplace things. If they are labelled, we are able to return them to their owners. Items without names are placed in a Lost Property Box. Students are able to check the box for missing items. All unclaimed items of school uniform are laundered and placed on sale through the clothing pool. Other clothing is donated to charity.

Safe, responsible and respectful use of digital technology. Our children and young people have grown up with digital technology and it is woven into their lives. During COVID -19 many young people are using digital technology more often to learn and to socialise. Supporting children and young people to use technology in a safe, respectful and responsible manner allows for more active online learning that can increase student engagement and participation. It also supports access to a broader range of content and learning resources that can supplement students’ learning experiences. Being safe online is a shared responsibility for students, teachers, parents, carers and the broader community. It is important that families can communicate with their children about how to use digital technology in safe, responsible and respectful ways. Here are some key reminders for children and young people of how to stay safe online: • Protect personal information, including name,

address, school, email address, telephone number, pictures and other personal details.

• Never share user names or passwords and only use your own

• Ask a teacher or other responsible adult for help if anyone online asks for personal information, wants to meet or offers money or gifts.

• Let a teacher or other responsible adult know immediately if anything online that is suspicious, harmful or inappropriate.

• Never hack, disable or bypass any hardware or software security, including any virus protection, spam and filter
