View the linked Excel table: Fuel Running Costs (RACV)
Theory/NotesFuel Rates are calculated in: • km per Litre (km/L) or • Litres per km (L/km) or • Litres per 100km
(L/100km)
![Page 13: Term 3 Week 1-3; FSDr1,2,3 – Chapter 13 – Focus Study – Maths in Driving](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062720/568132d5550346895d9998a6/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Ask: How far can it travel in 1L?Answer: 7.4 L / 100 km = = 100 7.4
= 13.5135… km on 1 Litre.So, if I have 48 L of petrol I can travel…Distance = 48 L 13.5135 km
= 648.6 km (about 649 km)
Ask: How much petrol does it take to travel in 1 km?
Answer: 11 L / 100 km = = 11 100 = 0.11 L for 1 km.
So, if I have to travel 640 km I need…Distance = 640 km 0.11 L
= 70.4 L

How far does the car travel before I put my foot on the brake?D = S TD = 60 km/h 2.5 secondsPROBLEM – THE UNITS ARE ALL DIFFERENT (eg Hours vs Seconds)How many metres are in 1 km?1 km = 1000 metres, so 60 km/h is…60 km / h = 60 000 m / h.How many seconds are in 1 hour?60 60 = 3600 seconds!\ 60 km/h… Speed in metres per second is: 60 000 m / 3600 s… {calculate
this…}Speed (in m/s) = 16.7 m/sNOW D = S x T = 16.7 m/s 2.5 secondsD = 41.7 metresThis is the distance I travel BEFORE I even realise there is a problem that I need to brake for. It is called the reaction-time distance.

How far does the car travel before I put my foot on the brake?D = S TD = 70 km/h 2.5 secondsPROBLEM – THE UNITS ARE ALL DIFFERENT (eg Hours vs Seconds)How many metres are in 1 km?70 km / h = 70 000 m / h.How many seconds are in 1 hour?60 60 = 3600 seconds!\ 70 km/h… Speed in metres per second is: 70 000 m / 3600 s… {calculate
this…}Speed (in m/s) = 19.4 m/sNOW D = 19.4 m/s 2.5 secondsD = 48.6 metresWhen I use the brakes how much distance is there until I stop (in dry conditions)?Use d = 0.01v2 from your text/notes (for this formula you can keep the velocity in km/h)
d = 0.01 702 = 49
TOTAL DISTANCE = 48.6 metres + 49 metres = 97.6 metres!
