MULTICULTURAL DAY
7/8H CREATING SUSPENSE
YOUTH FRONTIERS
Congratulations to Mr Broadhead and his College team (pictured) in the Buckley Shield. STATE WINNERS – need I say more!!!
More wonderful events – congratulations to all who made Multicultural Day such a wonderful event. This is a highlight on our calendar every year, and every year it gets better. It was especially wonderful to see so many parents and a big thankyou to those who enabled many of us to sample their food.
Congratulations to Liam McRandal and Awhina Hita (pictured) whose writing about the Creating Chances program has been selected for publishing in ‘thebigsmoke.com.au’. The Big Smoke’s Next Gen program was established to provide young people with an opportunity to write about something they feel strongly about under the guidance of a mentor and then have that article published on the site. This was a fabulous effort and we are very proud of Awhina and Liam. The selectors wrote of the very difficult choice they had to select winners because of the overwhelming number of quality submissions.

In Terms 2 and 3, eight students from CCSC participated in the Youth Frontiers mentoring program.
The program gives young people an opportunity to build life
skills and self-confidence through working collaboratively with their mentors to undertake a community project that
makes a positive difference in their local community.
Deeana and Jessica (Year 9) chose to raise money for the Starlight Children's Foundation. They also spent a morning
at the "Starlight Express Room" at Westmead Children's Hospital, working with the children who visit the room for a
much-needed break from normal hospital routine.

COOKING CORNER
Year 9 and 10 Food Technology students recently completed the Mystery Box Challenge where they were required to use a minimum of
three ingredients from the 'mystery box' but were also able to add their own ingredients to
plan, create and present a dish.
All the students did really well and the dishes presented were of a high quality and
very delicious. Well done master chefs!
Our 7/8H students enjoyed experimenting with different variations of nachos -
traditional, vegetarian and nachos with olives and fetta were just some of the
different types presented.
Isikeli from Year 10 also made a delicious pastry triangle.
The Mystery Box

This term, Year 8 classes have been exploring the question “How do composers create suspense?”
Some fabulous work has been produced by students in
7/8H as they have explored suspense in writing and images.
Some sentences from our suspense writing:
A dark shadow ran towards the window. The wind blew cold on the endless rows of trees.
I was quivering in fear. I can feel the shadow’s spiritual rush glide across my
arm. As my body was almost completely submerged, I took
my last breath. Is this the end?
As I froze in horror, I heard a mysterious noise. As I was leaving, I heard a whisper. It said, “I told you
not to go down the alley.” At this moment, I can’t breathe.
“It comes out at night,” is what my sister said.
A wordle with our most commonly used suspense words:
Year 8
Experimenting with 'suspense' in images..

Shalvey Campus students attended an enrichment day at Bidwill Campus in Week 8 to gain knowledge and experience of a working farm.
Students participated in activities, including: - Meeting and interacting with the animals, including walking the calf and sheep - How to manage the calf, bird and cow whilst being fed - Gaining practical experience using the equipment on the farm - Driving the tractor - Planting chrysanthemums
They also sampled different herbs and vegetables that had been grown on the farm.
As you can see in the photos, our students had a great time on the day!

In Week 7 of this term. students were introduced to the concept of 'specificity' as a training principle when running on bush tracks and trails.
After completing a healthy shop, students enjoyed a lunch time master chef session which focused on foods to fuel an endurance athlete and promote recovery. Students finished the day with a yoga session
at Tunnel View Lookout where students developed an understanding of 'active recovery'.
It was a brilliant day with our students who ticked off more achievements on the journey towards their end goal race.
Run Beyond Skills Day
Running Science - Proud supporters of The Run Beyond Project
On 22 September, students visited the Running Science store in Rozelle where they received a pair of shoes and socks after being professionally fitted.
Thank you to Running Science for their support of our students and The Run Beyond Project.
Our students are now ready for their goal race - a 10km park run in Lawson on Sunday, 24 September. We wish them all the best! Updates to follow in our next newsletter.

This year Chifley College Shalvey Campus hosted its second annual Multicultural Day to celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of our
students, staff and community.
The theme for this year was "harmony and acceptance". The aim of the day is to promote tolerance, understanding and
appreciation of a range of cultures.
On the day, staff and students: Dress in culturally significant clothing, colours, flags etc.
Engage in cultural workshops and activities including sport, art and history
Participate in a flag ceremony which recognises all of the many different nations/cultures represented in our student cohort
Perform and watch a concert featuring culturally significant music and dance items.
With more than thirty different nationalities represented within the school, it is very important to embrace our diversity.
A special thank you to some of our parents/carers, Mr Jubilee, Cathyann and family, Mrs Gafo Faavevela, Mrs Leuelu and Mrs Bui Tulevu for their
contribution to the day, including working with our performers and providing food for our cultural food stalls.

Congratulations to the Chifley College Buckley Shield team who won the grand final on Wednesday 13 September

CLONTARF
SHALVEY
ACADEMY
In the last few weeks our boys have participated in the Ross Kelly Cup, NFL College Game, Clontarf Health Check Day and Clontarf after school activities.
Ross Kelly Cup - The boys stayed at Cockatoo Island for two nights and made friends with boys from many other Clontarf academies. We were lucky to have special guest speaker Stan Grant, an Aboriginal journalist, talk about the different issues he had growing up and how it has
shaped him to be the person he is today. After two busy days at the tournament, the boys finished off with a game of laser tag at Fox Studios against Mt Druitt Academy.
Health Check Day - Clontarf has a focus on the health and the overall wellbeing of the young
men in our academies. To help support the early detection, diagnosis and intervention for common and treatable conditions, the Clontarf Foundation worked with our local health provider,
Western Sydney Mt Druitt Health Clinic to deliver a free health check to our young men.
College Football Game - The college football game was a winner for the boys who had never witnessed an American football game before. The boys were lucky enough to be involved in the
pre-game activities and also meet the players from Stanford University and Rice University. It was an amazing experience for our boys.
We look forward to another busy, but exciting term with
the boys in Term 4.

FROM THE
FRONT OFFICE
Have your contact details or phone numbers changed?
Have you have moved or changed your residential or postal address?
Are your emergency contact details up to date?
A Change of Details form can be found at the back of this newsletter or on our school app. Please complete and have your student return the form to the front office, or a simple phone
call to the office is acceptable.
If you have a student wishing to attend Shalvey Campus in 2018 and you have not yet notified us of your intention,
please contact the office as quickly as possible so we can arrange for enrolment paperwork to be issued to you.
It is important you have returned enrolment forms to us
so you do not miss important information regarding Year 7 Orientation next term.
It is important that all student information and records are kept up to date. This is particularly vital in the case of emergency where the school needs
to contact a student's parents or caregivers.
We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school.
It is important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops.
Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma
and diabetes and other health care related issues should be provided to the school by parents. This will greatly assist our
school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing.
