Term 3 Issue No. 4 September, 2015 It is time for the boarders to have a holiday! Energy levels are low following a hectic term of study and sport and other co-curricular activities. A number of boarders have had sporting commitments at home and I have admired their commitment to their studies despite being tired from weekends of travel and netball and football. Once again I am extremely pleased with the academic results the boarders have achieved in their reports but much still needs to be done with final exams on the horizon. SUSAN KUKESTE Susan, Coordinator of Girls Boarding, has decided to complete her time at Sacred Heart College at the end of the year and commence a new chapter in her life. I would like to sincerely thank Susan for her 4 years as a leader in our boarding community and in particular, thank her for willingness to instigate change in the girls boarding community. Susan is a woman of deep faith and this was evident in her care for the girls. Thank you, Susan. CAITLIN BROWN It is with great pleasure that I announce to our boarding community that Caitlin Brown has been appointed as the new Coordinator of Girl's Boarding. Caitlin is an old scholar of Sacred Heart College and she has a deep understanding of the Marist Charism. She recently spent a number of weeks volunteering in a Marist school in Fiji. She is studying to become a secondary teacher and is a Team Leader for Edmund Rice camps for Marginalised Youth. I have no doubt that Caitlin will continue to be an outstanding leader in our community. LEAVE At the beginning of Term 4, I will be attending the biannual Marist Boarding Conference. SHC hosted this conference 2 years ago. I will return to our community for the last days of year 12 classes and the Year 12 Boarders Graduation Dinner. Following the dinner I will be going on Long Service Leave for the remainder of the year. Susan Kukeste (mobile 0448 493 667) and Jason Dam (mobile 0400 824 490) will be responsible for the day to day operation of the boarding community and the Principal, Steve Byrne, has asked recently retired Head of Boarding at Rostrevor College, Peter Oswald, to be on call to assist Susan and Jason if needed. Andrea and I wish all boarding families a happy and safe holiday break.

HENRY & RICHARD WHITING BURSARY Each year the Whiting family donates a Bursary in the memory of their loved family members, Henry and Richard. Each Year 10 boarder is encouraged to apply and then members of the family interview a number of applicants. Recently Nick and John Whiting conducted these interviews, together with Shane Hennessy, and we are pleased to announce the 2015 recipients: Kade Morris of Kingscote, Gemma Thomas of Roxby Downs, and Molly Noonan of Caltowie North.

FIELD DAYS On 18-19 September, Barb Stephenson and Julie Hext attended the Riverland Field Days in Barmera. Many old scholars visited the College booth, and there was also a lot of interest from prospective families for future enrolment. Next week will see Shane Hennessy and Barb Stephenson attending the Yorke Peninsula Field Days in Paskeville from Tuesday 29 September to Thursday 1 October inclusive. If you know of any families who would like to discuss future enrolment at the College, please invite them to come along.

BOARDER PARENT ASSOCIATION Please note that the next Boarder Parent Association meeting scheduled for Sunday, 11 October at 4.30pm, has now been cancelled due to Br Jordan Redden’s 70th anniversary as a Marist Brother celebration being held that day. The next meeting will be at the beginning of 2016 school year for new families and continuing families on Monday, 1 February 2016, commencing at 4.00pm prior to the Beginning of Year Boarder Mass at 5.00pm. It was lovely to see families from the south-east and other parts of South Australia attend the annual Boarder Parent Weekend Away in Robe on 22 & 23 August. Accommodation was provided at The Calendonian Inn, with an enjoyable Saturday dinner and breakfast on Sunday morning. Following breakfast, a tour of Robe together with morning cuppa/cake at Mahalia Coffee factory was led by Cathy Hinge. At the conclusion of the tour, 12.00pm Mass was attended at St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Many thanks to Cathy and Alan Hinge from Mundulla for organising the weekend away this year. Jo & Andrew Allchurch from Tothill Creek, Jenni & Leo Redden from Riverton, Kirsty & Mick Grady from Naracoorte, Cathy & Alan Hinge from Mundulla, Kate & Adrian McCabe from Salter Springs, and Barb & Neville Stephenson attended the weekend.

KUBLAI KHAN The Year 11 and 12 boarders had an evening out last week going to Kublai Khan, a Mongolian restaurant at Parkside. Each year the boarders are treated to this meal by our catering company, Scholarest. We thank Scholarest for organising the night. The Year 10 and junior boarders will have their meal in early Term 4.

ANNUAL BOARDERS NETBALL GAME Each year the “new” boarders play the “old” boarders in netball. 2015 resulted in the “old” boarders beating the “new” boarders 39-19.

HOT BREAKFAST Our wonderful chef, Michael, has introduced regular hot breakfast for the boarders this term. It would be silly not to say that the boarders have thoroughly enjoyed eggs & bacon plus other delicious morning delicacies this term!
