PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Congratulations to Thai Thippawan of Year 12 who has been selected to present a talk at a TEDX even being held
at MLC in early June. Thai was selected from a huge number of applicants. His presentation will be filmed and
reach a global audience on the TED website.
Congratulations also to the senior debating team who defeated Canterbury Girls HS yesterday to become the
Zone Champions.
As the cold weather has finally started can you please make sure that your son is arriving at school in his winter
uniform, complete with school jumper, jacket or blazer. The complexities of the teenage metabolism never
cease to amaze me, and even though some of the boys claim that they are “warm” in shorts we don’t want
them getting sick.

THE TRIANGULAR DOMINO
Mr Tenefrancia 8 Apollo Mathematics Teacher
The photo shows some students of 8 Apollo engaging in a game of classic triangular
domino called Tri-Ominos. The object of the game is to get as many points as possible by
joining matching Tri-Ominos. This game combines strategy, luck and new challenges each
time you play. Students will be skilled at matching numbers wherever possible and will
appreciate the strategy involved in making the best moves for the most points.

CURIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS
A good scientist is a person in whom the childhood quality of perennial curiosity lingers on. Once he gets an answer, he has other questions. — Frederick Seitz
I am a student teacher from the University of Sydney, and it is this same curiosity that I have endeavoured to spark in the young scientists at Ashfield Boys HS for the past few weeks.
In Year 8, students have been conducting experiments to unlock the secrets of the Periodic Table. Students constructed electrical circuits to compare the conductivity of metals and non-metals. They also compared the reactivity of different elements with hydrochloric acid. Most interestingly though, Year 8 observed a demonstration of the highly reactive alkali metal, sodium, reacting with water! The reaction was successful and students were enthralled by the captivating explosion that accompanied it!
Year 10 has also been studying Chemistry, diving into chemical reactions at the atomic level. Students investigated what happens when different metals are mixed with acids, conducting ‘pop tests’ to prove the production of hydrogen gas. Students participated in the classic baking soda and vinegar experiment, working collaboratively to understand what actually happens when a metal carbonate (baking soda) reacts with an acid (vinegar).
In Year 11, students have been going back in time as they study the history of life on Earth. Students examined fossils of prehistoric plants and animals, analysing their features to find out when and where they might have lived. They also investigated chemical clues hidden in stromatolites and Banded Iron Formations in rocks to find out when oxygen became available in Earth’s atmosphere. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the students at Ashfield Boys HS. The Science Faculty has
been very supportive and I have learnt so much along the way. I know the boys’ curiosity and
thirst for knowledge will inspire them as young scientists of tomorrow.

TUTANKHAMUN TOMB AT ASHFIELD BOYS HIGH
James Chatwin History Teacher
The Year 11 Ancient History class recreated a real life scale map of the tomb of the
New Kingdom Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. The students have been studying the
tomb, artefacts associated with the tomb and the body of Tutankhamun himself
during the past several weeks as part of their Ancient History Case Study. This activity
provided students with the opportunity to completely understand the structure,
techniques and technologies associated with the construction of a New Kingdom
Egypt pharaonic tomb.

READY FOR ACTION
On Monday night our Senior Theatresports team headed to PLC Croydon for the first round of the Senior Impro Australia competition. This was a big jump for our Year 10 boys as they were playing a division up and had to compete against Year 11 and 12 teams from local Private and Public Schools. This brave move however allows them to stay together as a team and refine their skills in preparation for next year. The competition was fierce and our boys did well. Their miming, collaboration, ideas and narrative structure have really improved since beginning this sport last year. Unfortunately they did not make the top four and do not get to continue on to the semis, however the boys walked away with valuable input about improving their physicality and movement during performance. Congratulations to George Brooks, Hamish Lewis, Cristian Triulzi-Mcnee, Galen Banfield and Stevan Pekar for an excellent night of Improvisation.

BOYS CAN SEW
Year 8 Design and Technology 4 is studying a
course of study on Textiles and Design for
Semester One. ‘You be my Hands’, is a program
that requires the students to design and construct
a puppet based on an Aboriginal ‘Dreaming’ story.
To date, the class has chosen their stories and
designed their characters. Recently, we have been
focussing on 3 basic embroidery stitches; running
stitch, back stitch and chain stitch. The boys have
enjoyed the challenges that sewing poses for them.
Another requirement is to attach a button to their
puppet. So Mum, next time your son loses a button
on their shirt, tell them they can reattach it
themselves!

CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS CROWNED
Wade Tyler PD/H/PE Teacher
Our senior and junior cross country champions were determined at our recent NWMSA
Cross Country at Macquarie University. Connor A in Year 7 and Edward Z Year 12, who
finished 6th and 8th in their respective age groups, will be cross country champs for 2016.
Edward held his spot in the race from go to whoa, whilst Connor made up many lengths on
the final lap to secure a spot at the upcoming regional carnival. Great work to the whole
team who attended the carnival!

The Ashfield Boys High School Senior Debating Team debated against Canterbury Girls High School in the third round of the NSW Premier's Hume Barbour Debating Competition on Thursday 26 June. The topic was "That the Queen should be the last Australian monarch" and Ashfield debated the negative side of the topic. The team was more focused and concise in their arguments than in previous debates and the result was a victory for Ashfield Boys High School. This result means that Ashfield Boys Senior Debating Team are the Debating Champions for the
Zone 1 Region. This is a massive achievement as it is the first time that Ashfield Boys High School
has competed in the Hume Barbour Debating Competition, having previously competed in the
NSW Premier's Metro Karl Cramp Competition. The Senior Debating Team now face Sydney Boys
High School in an elimination round next week. The winner of that debate will debate at NSW
Parliament House on Friday 3 June. The school is proud of the team's achievements and wish
them luck in the upcoming debate next week.
The Senior Debating Team are:
Thai Thippawan Jonah Dassaklis Murali Chinnappa Thomas Powell Cody Jaikiew
SENIOR DEBATING
The Coding Club will start meeting after school every Tuesday afternoon from 3:10 until 4pm in
G12. Ms Beretin will help boys interested in coding to improve their skills using HTML, CSS,
JavaScript, ActionScript , Scratch, Python and Visual Basic. It does not matter if your son is a
beginner or advanced, as students will work at their own pace to write code. Places are limited
to 24 and will be filled on a first come first served basis.
Learning to write code is a skill that has many benefits beyond being able to program a
computer. It teaches logical and mathematical thinking and also requires students to use their
creativity.
If you would like your son to attend the Coding Club please fill in the application form over and
return this to either Ms Beretin or Miss Jane in the Accounts office.
