Monday 27 April 2015 On The Waves

From the Principal

Mr Greg Smith

Our year 12 students completed their half yearly ex-

ams at the end of term 1. They will have received

results and some valuable feedback that will set

them in the right direction in this final stage of their

Higher School Certificate. The rest of the school will

be focusing on half yearly assessments. These are

held in the following weeks:

Years 7, 8 and 11 in week 5 (commencing 18th

May)

Years 9 and 10 in week 6 (commencing 25th

May)

As I indicated last week, NAPLAN exams commence

for Years 7 and 9 on Tuesday 12th May 2015.

Year 10 into 11 subject selections begin in the next

few weeks. Information booklets about curriculum

choices have been prepared for year 10 students.

Students should be considering which subjects they

may be interested in and start seeking advice from

class teachers and the careers adviser. The DEC has

an information page which provides links and advice

for students at

http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-

and-study/planning-for-the-future/year-10-

subject-selection

BOSTES has their advice page at:

https://studentsonline.bos.nsw.edu.au/go/

seniorstudy/hsc_subject_selection/

The school will also run an information evening on

May 12 at 6.00pm.

Our swimmers performed very strongly at the NSW

combined high schools swimming championships.

Well done to the team of Ciara Landon, Christine

Bacala, Zoe Taylor West and Bindi Ware. These stu-

dents were striving for their personal best and we

commend them on their pursuit of excellence in their

chosen sporting endeavour. I would also like to rec-

ognise the efforts and achievements of Rachel Press-

er in synchronised swimming and Max North in lawn

bowls. I believe more about each of the students

mentioned will be outlined in the sports section of

this newsletter.

Our 2015-2017 draft school plan will be finalised

this week. We welcome any members of our school

community who would like to have some input into it,

to attend a planning meeting to be held in our con-

ference room on Wednesday 29th April from 3.00pm

to 4.30pm. After that the completed document will

be posted onto our website, along with our annual

school report. Both of these documents will be pub-

lished on the school internet site by the end of the

week.

The vast majority of our students have completed the

Tell Them From Me surveys in term 1. This has pro-

vided us with good base-line data as we go into the

implementation of our new plan, and will help us

monitor our progress over the next three years. Par-

ents and staff will be asked to complete their version

of the survey in term 3.

We commemorated the 100th anniversary of ANZAC

day last week and once again I believe everyone was

impressed with the solemn, respectful nature of the

ceremony. We had a record attendance at Saturday’s

ANZAC march with almost forty students and a dozen

staff participating. Christopher Walkden from Year

10 was one of four Tweed students who read his pro-

ject about the meaning of ANZAC day. It was well de-

livered and I’m sure Chris’ understanding of the AN-

ZAC legend and the meaning of remembrance reso-

nated with the large crowd assembled.

CAREERS NEWS

Term 2 is well under way. All students seem to be working hard which is pleasing to see. This is busy term for

me with a lot of workshops and careers adviser events to attend. It is extremely important for me to attend

these sessions so that I can receive all of the most up to date information on course, scholarships, applica-

tions and general careers information. As the information passes my desk, I will certainly pass it on to stu-

dents and families. Year 10 subjects selections is a major focus over the next few weeks, and my senior Grif-

fith University classes have their first Biology Labs and Exercise Science Labs coming up in the middle of this

term also.

My office has been busy with students asking for assistance to get their resumes together, as they wish to

start looking for part-time work. This is a great start and I am more than happy to help. If you would like your

child to get a resume, or update their current one, please encourage them to come and see me, or send me

an email [email protected] . All students that have part time work should have a tax file

number, and these can be obtained now at Australia Post.

Also, I would love to hear about your child and if they are achieving in any aspects or areas outside of school.

Whether they are accomplishing great feats on the sporting field, or in navy cadets or on the musical stage,

please let me know, as I would love to recognise their efforts.

Have a great fortnight.

Jess Dreyer
