Term 2 Week 2 7 May 2018

Welcome to Week 2! Our first week of school was filled with a number of sporting events including our school’s Cross Country Carnival. It was perfect weather for this event and student behaviour was just as good. It was great to see students competing to the best of their ability and cheering on their friends. Thank you to Miss Caban, Mrs Hurley and Mrs Girdham for organising the event and to all the parent helpers that assisted on the day. Well done team!

Our softball team was narrowly defeated by Warnervale in the PSSA competition. Ms Coafield and Adam Foa'i- Auimatagi were extremely impressed with the team’s effort and sportsmanship.

We also had Lachlan, Bodie and Ella participate in the combined Tuggerah Lakes / Wallarah PSSA touch trials and Isabelle W who competed in the Sydney North Soccer Trials at Hornsby. These students participated to the best of their ability and should be very proud of their efforts.

Life Skills Program This week all students will have the opportunity to engage in a fundamental movement program that focuses on physical, social, emotional and self-regulating strategies to enhance / encourage wellbeing, resilience and lifelong learning. Facilitators from the Life Skills Group will deliver this 8 week program (45 minutes per week per class) in consultation with TPS teachers.

We are excited to be implementing this program and look forward to the positive benefits that it will bring to both students and staff. To ensure all students have access to this program it will be delivered at the school’s expense.

For students to be eligible to participate in this program they need to return their permission note. If you have any questions in relation to this program, please don’t hesitate to ask. Intention to Apply: Year 5 Opportunity Class 2019 If you would like to have your child considered for a Year 5 opportunity class (OC) entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. Please note OC classes are external of TPS.

If you are interested you will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply and additional information are now available. Please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

The application website opens on 1 May 2018 and closes on Friday, 18 May 2018. No late applications will be accepted.

NAPLAN Next week the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. This year some schools are trialling NAPLAN on a digital format but TPS will be sitting the traditional paper test this year which is the same as years gone by.

The results of the tests will provide important information to our school about what each student can do and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 15 – 17 May 2018 and are as follows:

Tues 15 May

Wed 16 May Thurs 17 May

Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). Writing Test

Reading Test Numeracy Test

On Friday 18 May, a ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or are absent on a test day.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consultation with the school principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with me if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Additional information about NAPLAN will be sent home this term and can be found at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support.

P&C Meeting The P&C meeting will be on Wednesday, 16 May at 6:30pm in the OOSH building. All parents are welcome to attend! Look forward to seeing you there!

From the Principal

Groups start straight away so please come along if you can. We have Maths groups together on Wednesday afternoons at 2.15pm. Tuesday groups will change to 9.30am due to Scripture and Ethics classes this term.

We will be continuing to learn about ‘People live in Places’ in our Geography unit which will culminate in a ‘Local Area Walk’ down Cadonia Road, past the shops and along the lake front to observe environmental features, both natural and man-made. A note about this will be sent home nearer to the date. Parents will be welcome to join us.

Sport will still be on Thursday morning and children will learn skills for the Athletics Carnival in Term 3. We all enjoyed participating in the Cross Country, showing great sportsmanship.

So as you can see we will be very busy this term again. If you have any questions or problems, please remember to feel free to discuss things with us. Sue Hurley and Lee Girdham KT Welcome back to all the K-Terrific families. We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and your children are refreshed and ready to go!

Scripture and Ethics begins this term and will be held each Tuesday from 9-9.30am. All students attend Scripture lessons unless you completed the ethics note or notify us in writing otherwise.

The Life Skills Program will also commence this Tuesday. This program focusses on physical, social, emotional and self-regulating strategies and skills. I will work with a facilitator to cultivate wellbeing, resilience and lifelong learning. Students will participate in games, mindfulness and other fun activities over the next 8 weeks. Permission notes need to be returned by tomorrow.

Please remember that blue folders and Home Readers must come to school every day and Toto cards are due back each Monday. It’s great to see so many students participating in our sight word program. Please practise, practise, practise. These are all words that your child will come across in their guided reading books and once known will make reading an easier process.

This Friday, May 11 staff will be holding a Mother’s Day Breakfast. It would be lovely to see lots of Mum’s and Nan’s attend the breakfast. RSVPs were due back at school yesterday, unfortunately no late RSVPs will be accepted.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask me or let me know. Have a wonderful week.

Heather Towns Early Stage 1/Stage 1 K/1D Welcome back to Term 2.

I hope everyone had a lovely break and some special time together with your family.

Already this term, Tuggerawong PS students have had a fantastic start by participating in our Cross Country Carnival.

K-2 students will be attending Scripture lessons this term from 9.00am – 9.30 am each Tuesday.

Tuesday is our Library day, please bring in a Library bag, so students can borrow a book and work towards completing their Premiers Reading Challenge.

Life Skills will also be on Tuesday for K1D and Sport will be on Thursday afternoon so please remember to send student in sports uniform, including a hat.

We will continue to teach our core PBL expectations of respectful, responsible and personal best. Students can receive Toto’s for this positive behaviour and participate in the end of term Reward Day.

Friday, 11 May is a special Mother’s Day breakfast starting at 8.00 am and we look forward to sharing this event with the many families at Tuggerawong PS.

Could I please ask if students could donate any whiteboard markers or glue sticks that would be greatly appreciated as we are already getting low on these items.

If you would like any other information or like to discuss your child’s learning please come and have a chat or make an appointment through the office for a convenient time. Have a fabulous fortnight

Mrs Doust

Stage 1 1/2R Welcome back! I hope everyone is well rested and ready for another busy term! I am excited to see what Term 2 has in stall for us. Well done to everyone who participated in Cross Country last Friday. You all put in a fantastic effort!

Just a reminder to return your child’s Life Skills Program note before tomorrow if you haven’t done so already. This is a valuable program for students and I would not like anyone to miss out. Our class will start the program this Wednesday in the last 45 minutes of the day in the hall.

Ethics and Scripture lessons begin this Tuesday from 9am.

Last week in writing, we discussed student writing goals and how we are going to achieve them this term. We read The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson. Students were to choose their favourite character, describe it using adjectives and tell me why it was their favourite. There were some fantastic writing samples. Here are a couple

My favourite character is the whale. He took the snail out to sea. The whale was white and grey. He is big. I think the whale is nice. Kayden

My favourite character is the whale from the Snail and the Whale because he was kind. He has a white and grey tummy. The whale is as big as a truck. Scarlett

My favourite character is the whale because he is a nice friend to the snail. Olivia

We are also learning how to write an information report. Year 2’s have been super helpful this week, helping our Year 1’s with their reports. We chose to write about whales because we already knew so much about them from our story we read last week.

In Maths last week, we revised our teen and ty numbers. I think we have those down pat now! Students were also learning about place value when revising our teen numbers. This week we are looking at addition. Year 1 will be focusing on numbers 1-50 and using number combinations to help us solve addition problems quickly. Year 2 will be counting by hundreds and using a range of strategies to help them solve addition problems.

This Wednesday our P&C will be running our Mother’s Day stall. Please send your child’s money in an envelope with their name clearly labelled. During the day, they will get a chance to purchase a gift. Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful mums for Sunday!

If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to come and see me!

Have a wonderful week!! Mrs Rainford 2S Welcome back!

We hope you enjoyed the holidays with your children and don’t miss them too much now they are back at school.

What a fantastic return to school I had!! I am so pleased that things are slowly returning to normal and I am back in the classroom. The 2S students are once again an incredible bunch of little people and both Miss Smith and I feel very lucky. They made my first couple of days back in the classroom an absolute pleasure and are to be congratulated on their beautiful behaviour.

Page 5: Term 2 Week 2 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · 5/7/2018  · must come to school every dayand Toto cards are due back each Monday. It’s great to see so many students participating

This term will see myself on class from Monday through to Wednesday and Miss Smith on Thursday and Friday. I know that the students really enjoy having Miss Smith as their teacher and have also responded very well to my return to the classroom. Miss Smith and I are in contact each day so as to ensure a seamless transition from the beginning to the end of the week.

We have a few things starting up this week: • Our Ethics and Scripture lessons begin again for

this term on a Tuesday. • We also begin our resilience program this week,

which was detailed in the yellow note that came home last Wednesday.

• Our Mother’s Day Stall is to be held this Wednesday and Thursday!! If you would like your child to purchase something special, please ensure they have their money in a safe place such as a wallet or purse so as it does not get lost on the way to school.

• Don’t forget our Mother’s Day Breakfast this Friday, which is always a huge success and is a great opportunity to bring our fantastic little school community together. It also gives your child a sense of pride in their school when they see the people they look up to and love enjoying spending time with them there.

I was really impressed with the number of students who are participating in our Home Reading program and completing their homework each week. A little bit of time at home spent on these activities each night helps them to establish the much needed study routines they will require in the later years of Primary School and certainly once they enter High School.

Have a great week! Mrs Sturgess and Miss Smith:o) Stage 1/2 2/3F Hello Parents and Friends and welcome to Term 2!

2/3F started the term refreshed and ready to learn. They have adapted well to our changed routines and are particularly excited with what they will be learning about over the next few weeks.

Students in Year 3 are preparing for NAPLAN by completing practise activities. They have been loving them so much that even Year 2 have asked to join in.

In English, students will be studying books by Aaron Blabey and learning to write Narratives and Informative texts.

In Maths, students have been revising and extending on a range of strategies to better understand addition and subtraction problems. They have also been enjoying completing tasks through Study Ladder on the iPads.

In History, students will be completing a research task based on how family traditions change over time while in Technology, they will be telling a story through the use of comic strips.

It has been a very busy and exciting start to the term and I look forward to sharing more updates on what our wonderful students are achieving. Mrs Fares

Stage 2 3D Welcome back to Term 2!

We have had an extremely busy first week back with lots of learning taking place.

We have been learning all about and using one of our Super 6 Strategies – Summarising. Students have enjoyed putting into their own words what they have read in literacy groups.

In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction and how to solve word problems.

Well done to all 3D who participated in Cross Country. You all put in a super effort and we are proud of you. Congratulations to those students who have made it to the next level. Thank you to our parents who assisted and supported student on the day!

If you have any questions or concerns please contact us.

Have a fabulous fortnight! Kate Day and Kerri Houison 4C What an exciting and busy first week it has been in 4C.

This week I have enjoyed learning jump and split strategy in maths because it helps me add numbers quicker and is lots of fun Olivia We have learnt easy strategies when adding numbers this week. Miss Caban also showed us different words we may see in worded addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions Todd

I have really enjoyed writing a persuasive text about why cats are the best pet. I also have had lots of fun doing some Mother’s Day activities Keira

I am really enjoying learning about different types of celebrations in history. We have also been doing fun activities in groups for literacy Caitlyn

We all have been practising hard to get our pen license so we can use pen in our books, everyone is doing really well Cooper

A huge thankyou to those parents who came and assisted at our Cross Country Carnival on Friday!

Looking forward to a wonderful remainder of Term 2. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Miss Caban Stage 2/3 4/5N Welcome back to another busy and productive term! 4/5N have hit the ground running, getting straight into working hard in all subjects. Some things we have been focusing on this week include fractions and decimals, using high modality words in our persuasive writing and the Australian Constitution. Students were interested to hear about how the Constitution was formed and enjoyed discussing the reasons why it is important for a democracy to have one. Ask them all about it, they had great ideas!

Year 5 will be participating in NAPLAN during week 3 so we have been practising in class to ensure students feel ready.

After lunch each day we take 10 minutes to calm down and refocus. Some days this involves silent reading and on others we participate in a mindfulness activity such as

Page 6: Term 2 Week 2 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · 5/7/2018  · must come to school every dayand Toto cards are due back each Monday. It’s great to see so many students participating

meditation or breathing exercises. I find this is a great way to refocus energy from the playground and helps students to concentrate.

This term we will be participating in a resilience program called Life Skills. This is a high quality program that will be extremely beneficial to all students. Please return your signed permission note promptly so your child can be included in this invaluable program. 4/5N will be participating each Wednesday from Week 2. Students should wear sports uniform on this day.

Our Stage 2 and Stage 3 camps are fast approaching! Please ensure you are making the required payments and don’t hesitate to talk to me about payment concerns or enquiries.

All in all it’s been a great start to the term. Mrs Megan New Stage 3 5/6C Welcome to Term 2! I can only hope that the holidays have given you some good time to rest and rejuvenate with family and friends. This term there is a lot to be grateful about.

In History we are focusing on finalizing our ‘Australia as a Nation’ unit. This will link in closely with our new text study for this term, ‘My Place’. Both units explore the history of our Nation and take us back to what Australia was like in it’s beginnings and to where we are now.

I am excited to test out our writing and numeracy focused groups when our NAPLAN examinations come around in Week 3. Mrs. Collins and myself have been focusing on upskilling our Year 5 students by increasing our band achievement in the NAPLAN results, aligning with our school plan.

Our Canberra excursion will be here before we know it! I highly encourage our carer’s to make regular payments or make their initial payment to ensure your child’s attendance. It will approach very fast!

Please keep your eyes and ears open for Year 6 Farewell meetings coming soon! We will begin to plan and set aside roles and responsibilities in preparation for the coming festivities!

It is wonderful to see all the students back and ready to commence Term 2.

See with open eyes. Ms Coafield 5/6M Term 2 is already busy. We have already had our school Cross Country and 2 PSSA trials; with 13 of our students gaining a place in the Zone Cross Country and 3 students at PSSA trials. Zone notes will be out by this Wednesday, with Zone on Friday, 2 May.

The ICAS Digital Technology Assessments are on this Tuesday and we are again well represented.

I hope that all of the mothers will be joining us on Friday so that we can give you a small ‘Thank You’ for all of your efforts, by supplying a coffee and a croissant at our Mother’s Day Breakfast.

Don’t forget that the Canberra excursion is coming up early in Term 3. The next payment is due this Wednesday. Brian McNally

Primary Cross Country 2018 Well done to everyone that competed in the Cross Country on Friday. We were very proud to see everyone giving it a go and trying their best.

A special thanks to all of the parents that helped out on the day. We could not run these events without your support.

Our students are going to be hearing and talking a lot about resilience. You can help them by being informed and having some strategies up your sleeve when helping them to meet every day and unexpected challenges. We have noticed that many of our students struggle when it comes to dealing with every day challenges at school with their learning and social situations. By working together with families, we can help them to grow the skills and strategies they need to build resilience.

One way of explaining the concept of resilience is to imagine a plane encountering turbulence mid-flight. The turbulence, or poor weather, represents adversity. Different planes will respond to poor weather conditions in different ways, in the same way different children respond to the same adversity in different ways.

The ability of the plane to get through the poor weather and reach its destination depends on: • the pilot(the child) • the co-pilot(the child’s family, friends, teachers and

health professionals) • the type of plane (the child’s individual

characteristics such as age and temperament)

LET’S TALK ABOUT RESILIENCE

SPORT

Page 7: Term 2 Week 2 - tuggerawon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · 5/7/2018  · must come to school every dayand Toto cards are due back each Monday. It’s great to see so many students participating

• the equipment available to the pilot, co-pilots and ground crew

• the severity and duration of the poor weather.

We can all help children become more resilient and the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask other adults such as carers and grandparents to help. Building children’s resilience is everyone’s business, and it’s never too early or too late to get started.

As a parent, carer, or significant adult, you can help to develop essential skills, habits and attitudes for building resilience at home by helping your child to: • build good relationships with others including adults

and peers • build their independence • learn to identify, express and manage their emotions • build their confidence by taking on personal

challenges There are some simple things you can do to build your child’s resilience in these areas.

Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common response to difficult events.
