TERM 1 Week 4 Principal’s Report Swimming Carnival Success Best of luck to our students competing at the Zone Swimming Carnival tomorrow. Following our own school carnival last week, I received an email from one of the parents who attended. Rather than provide my own re-cap of the event, I thought I’d just include hers. Thank you to Mr Cox and the team for organising another quality swimming carnival. What a fantastic day yesterday was! I wanted to congratulate you and your team on yesterday’s event. I watched child after child feeling confident and safe enough to just jump in and have a go, knowing they probably wouldn’t win or would be lucky to just make it. They did it to help their teams and then to see the support they got from the other children was nothing short of heart-warming. My father and I watched all day and saw some of the best sportsmanship we’ve ever seen. My father doesn’t usually say much but he commented a lot yesterday. There was many races where we watched the winners, still in the pool, cheering on their mates to finish… It also cements my confidence in Floraville Public school and I am convinced that my children are in the right environment which is helping to shape them into exceptional young people. Thank you and congratulations again for a most wonderful day yesterday.” School Band I was fortunate to visit a band rehearsal for the Majors on Monday afternoon and was very impressed with the timing and quality of this year’s band. With a full contingent of musicians and some strong bass instrumentalists carrying the band along, the pieces were tight and punchy. A great start to the year for our 2020 Majors’ band. Best Start Reports This week, kindergarten students will receive their Best Start reports. Having completed an individual assessment with their class teacher, the reports provide a baseline of each child’s academic ability at the start of the year, and support the teacher in catering for each child’s learning needs. Parents will be invited to discuss the report with the teacher at parent- teacher interviews, later this term. Band Captains: Elisha Sparrow, Isabella Billingham, Robbie Freeman

Scripture and Ethics 2020 School Scripture (SRE) and Ethics (SEE) will commence in the coming weeks, with lessons running for 30 minutes each Friday morning. Currently, Christian Scripture (non-denominational) is available for all students in Years K-6, while Ethics is only available for students in Years 1, 3 and 4. Bahai Scripture is also available this year. Students who do not attend SRE or SEE participate in alternate activities. Further information, including links to the approved curriculum, and information on how to volunteer or undertake training, can be found by following the links on the school website. https://floraville-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/learning-at-our-school/religion-and-ethics Finally Many thanks to the special guests who joined us for our Leaders’ Induction on Monday. With badges of office presented to our captains, prefects, house captains and band captains, the ceremony provided a worthy acknowledgement of our new student leaders. Simon Mulready Principal

Images SPORT NEWS Swimming All the very best to our Floraville students who qualified for the Eastlakes Swimming Carnival this week. The carnival will be held at Charlestown Swimming Pool this Thursday and Friday. We look forward to hearing about great sportsmanship and personal bests. Primary Sporting Teams Many of the Floraville sporting teams have placed sign-up sheets on the Sports noticeboard (near the canteen). It is important that students sign up as soon as possible and listen to the daily notices in class. Zone Cricket Trials Well done to Tom White, Max Lonergan and Myles Sharman who were selected to represent Floraville Public School at the East Lake Macquarie Zone cricket trials. The boys had a BALL and had to contend against an impressive FIELD of applicants. Congratulations to Tom White, who has been selected for the Hunter Zone Cricket Trials on the March 6. Mr (Brett Lee) McSweeny and Mr (Glen McGrath) Baker

This week’s virtue is PERSEVERANCE: Perseverance is being steadfast and persistent. You commit to your goals and overcome obstacles, no matter how long it takes. When you persevere, you don't give up...you keep going. Like a strong ship in a storm, you don't become battered or blown off course. You just ride the waves.

LIBRARY NEWS

Literacy Pro The majority of students in primary classes as well as some Year 2 students have completed their initial Literacy Pro test. This means that all students can now begin (unless they are amazing and had already started) reading regularly at home and completing quizzes on these books at home. It is highly recommended that all students read for at least 20 minutes per day.

Overdue Books Invoices for books borrowed in 2019 and not returned were sent home this week. Of course, the best option for everyone is that the books be returned. However, if they are lost or damaged, payment can be made at the school office so the books can be replaced. OTHER SCHOOL NEWS School Photos 2020 Our school photo days are 16, 17 March this year. Please ensure your child is in full school uniform (no sports uniform) on both days. All school photos are to be ordered online. No envelopes will be sent home. To view packages and to place your order please visit www.newcastleschoolportraits.com and enter our school specific code: 200372. UNIFORM SHOP Uniform Shop Open Wednesdays from 2.30-3.15pm. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE UNIFORM SHOP. CANTEEN NEWS Just a reminder to children that if they are ordering lasagne, macaroni n cheese, bolognese or milkshakes they need to come up to the canteen at the beginning of 1st break to pick them up. Printed copies of the canteen roster are at the canteen ready for pick up. There has also been a copy posted to the canteen Facebook page.
