In the afternoon, ICT Services will be visiting our school to deliver some expert training on the use of Office 365 (O365). The O365 platform looks very exciting. All staff and students can access this software free of charge via their Learnlink address. O365 enables students and teachers to communicate easily on task expectations, progress and timelines. A couple of our staff members are already using O365 successfully with their secondary classes. The workshop planned for the Student Free Day is designed to familiarise everybody and provide some extension support for those already using the software. Our staff meeting in Week 7 will be dedicated to the One Child One Plan project. Burra Early Learning Centre staff will be joining Burra Community School staff for a 90 minute training session facilitated by Project Officer Louise Barker.

The One Child One Plan project supports the integration of the current Negotiated Education Plan (NEP), Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Individual Learning Plan (ILP) into a single learning plan through an online module by 2021.

Whilst the plan can be used for all children and students, the priority groups for this project are: children in preschool with high support

needs students with verified disability children and young people under the

Guardianship of the Chief Executive, Department for Child Protection

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students

On Friday March 7 we are holding our first whole school assembly for the year. During this assembly we will be welcoming our newest Reception students and inducting our student leaders. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Have a great fortnight! Kim

FROM THE WELLBEING COORDINATOR

This week is another very busy week here at Burra Community School. On Friday we have our Leadership Induction Assembly. This is where our Prefects, SRC and House Captains are recognised as leaders of our school. Being a leader is a very important life skill, which is also a fantastic platform for future aspirations and opportunities. I commend and congratulate these students on their efforts so far in 2019 and wish them all the best for the remainder of the school year. We have been fortunate enough to secure Dan van Holst Pellekaan MP as our guest speaker. Dan is passionate about education and leadership, and will be speaking about his leadership journey in regional areas. Also included in Friday’s assembly is our Buddy Bear presentation. This initiative was introduced several years ago where the Year 12 students present the Receptions with purple care bears. The Reception and Year 12 student then become ‘buddies’ for the year, which involves regular reading times, sports day guidance and support in other areas of schooling. The care bears are provided by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, which is an organisation who provide support and education on keeping children safe. To coincide with this we are having a ‘Splash of Purple’ day on Thursday to promote awareness. Students are required to wear something purple on the day. On Tuesday we also had the Port Adelaide Football Club visit our school in an engaging presentation for all students. This enabled students to gain an understanding on the life and sacrifices professional sportspeople must make to reach the top of their field. Within Pastoral Care lessons our secondary students have been learning about social interaction skills and requirements when interacting with people of different ages. This involved our Year 9 group reading and working with our Receptions in a one on one setting. This enabled students to show maturity, leadership and understanding of their Reception student’s needs. All students then ate lunch together and the friendships have evolved into the schoolyard. The feedback from this initiative has been excellent and is a process we hope to regularly continue. We have also had a circus visit, SAPSASA events, Year 5-7 girl’s football trainings and athletics practice in the lead up to our Sports Day next Friday. Fingers crossed for a 2019 Riggs clean sweep.

Matt Norman, Wellbeing Coordinator

PLEASE NOTE

Monday 25th March is a

INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING On Tuesday 26th February, we had six swimmers travel to Adelaide as part of the Lower North Zone Swimming Team. Combining with Eudunda, Riverton and Horizon the students competed against rival schools at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre and represented our school in a fantastic fashion. All of our students swam with great intensity and gave each race an awesome effort. Overall, the Lower North team finished sixth out of ten schools, which was quite a commendable effort. Well done to Tasha Parsons, Kate Edwards, Issy Bray, Tilly Nicholls, Jordan Van Gasteren and Jordan Schloithe for their participation, effort and selection in the team.

SAPSASA SWIMMING On Monday 25th of February, students from Burra Community School swam in the SAPSASA District Swimming Carnival at The Valleys Lifestyle Centre in Clare. Students swam in various events including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Burra had a fantastic afternoon with five of our swimmers being invited to attend the SAPSASA Swimming Championships in Adelaide. Congratulations to Lucas Thamm, Emmylou Cooper, Bree Tiver, Olivia Clarke and Alice Tiver. Overall, Burra placed 2nd in the Handicap pennant and 3rd in the Championship pennant. All of our swimmers represented the school with pride and had a great try at all of the events they participated in.

CIRCUS CHALLENGE

On Friday 22nd February, Demi and Melissa from Circus Challenge came to our school to perform and teach us a variety of circus tricks. They began the day with a whole-school performance, showcasing many tricks using different equipment including hula-hoops and a diablo. The performance was very entertaining, as we got to watch Mr Veitch try to ‘floss’ and Mr Inglis perform some ballet moves. At the end all the teachers got up to do a hula-hoop competition. Many students also got to participate in various acts throughout the performance. Demi and Melissa then conducted workshops throughout the day where we got to learn some of the tricks. We learnt to juggle and performed some tricky acts using spinning plates. We really enjoyed the day and hope that Circus Challenge comes back to visit Burra Community School soon!

I enjoyed spinning the plates. I really liked having a go at juggling. Lakyn We liked being able to interact with them and be able to experience different and fun opportunities of a circus. Issy and Tilly I really liked the hula-hooping and the workshop.

Ellie We enjoyed watching the teachers participate!

Year 12 girls The circus was awesome. I really liked the acrobatics. Miguel

CHRISTMAS TREE COMPETITION Congratulations to the Receptions from 2018 (now BIG Year 1s)! These students won the Christmas Tree Competition run by the Burra Christmas Fair. Their tree - "The sELFie Tree" - was a pallet tree that displayed 18 gorgeous elves. They received a prize of $30 which we decided to put back into our school canteen. Each child received a jelly and a zooper dooper! A win-win for everyone involved. A big thank-you to Jo Van Gasteren at the canteen for accommodating our large order of jelly, and the Burra Community Fair for the generous prize. The smiles say it all!

SPORTS COMMITTEE MEETING During Week 5, the Sports Committee met to discuss a busy term 1 of sporting events and activities. Feedback regarding the Burra Community School Swimming carnival, Interschool swimming and SAPSASA swimming was very positive, particularly in relation to student participation, effort and behaviour. Parent involvement and help during these events with a range of duties was also heavily praised. During the meeting, guidelines around swimming strokes and disqualifications were discussed, along with some minor changes to lane timing and House Captains elections. With the athletics carnival fast approaching on Friday the 15th of March (Week 7), we will again be running some events prior to this day. - The 3000m will be on Thursday 7th March

(week 6) during the first lesson of the day, for competitors in the under 10 age group and above.

- Javelin will be happening for the under 14 to open age groups on Friday 8th March (week 6) at lunch time.

- The 1500m will be on Wednesday 13th March (week 7) during the first lesson of the day for competitors in the under 10 age group and above.

The athletics carnival will be another great opportunity for students to engage in healthy competition with their peers, working hard for their respective house teams. Like all school sport events, staff and parent volunteer help is greatly appreciated and ensures things run smoothly and successfully. If you would be willing to assist in some way during the athletics carnival it would be greatly appreciated if you could inform me via email. My email address is [email protected].
