Welcome to 2012 at Marden Senior College. These last months have been a busy period for everyone so it is a good time to take a moment and reflect on the year so far.College CommunityMany of you are new to the College. When I was newly arrived people helped me settle in by being friendly, encouraging, and generous in sharing experiences. I trust you too have experienced this warmth and level of support, particularly in refining your study goals for this year and beyond.Every year the Marden Senior College is made up of people from a variety of places and with different personal goals. As a College we welcome all our new and continuing students and offer best wishes for your studies at Marden. It is great to be able to welcome faces new to the MSC staff team as well: Stephen Inglis (Assistant Principal Curriculum and Professional Learning) and Vimal Patel teacher of Physics and Mathematics . Thanks go to everyone for supporting new colleagues, and helping settle students into courses and on track towards their personal success.College successesThere have been many notable events already in 2012. SACE results and SATAC offers saw significant successes for many students from last year. At the SACE Merit Ceremony at Government House 26 students were awarded. The Registered Training Organisation Graduation ceremony was attended by the Minister for Education and Child Development, students and many supporters. Overall 219 people graduated including the 1000th graduate since the inception of the RTO. Graduates praised the work of College trainers. Congratulations go

to all students now on the next leg of their learning journey, particularly those recognised at the recent Celebration of Student Achievement event.Other successful activities highlight the range of services and talents at the College. Orientation days and College Forums gave many new students a chance to meet their teachers and settle in. Elections are complete for the Student Government Association and student reps have joined the Governing Council. The 2012 Fringe Photography exhibition demonstrated the depth of creative talent here. Harmony Day and the recent successful Trash and Treasure day, BBQ and Wednesday Bread days also show strong commitment to community involvement.College facilitiesFacilities continue to be improved. Students are now using the new Students Services area and the re-furbished toilets. More on-site works are planned and it means parking for visitors and staff is tight. Students are reminded of the ample parking spaces off lower Portrush Road.As part of the College Strategic Plan input is encouraged on how the College facilities can better serve student needs into the future while being as environmentally responsible and sustainable as possible. Students are invited to contribute to the further development of the College community and facilities. If you see opportunities to make improvements forward them to members of the Student Government Association, your teachers or make a time to discuss them with me.As a college our focus is the education, training and well-being of students. It is the interests of all of us and the responsibility of all members of Marden Senior College to contribute to maintaining a welcoming, safe adult community where the best personal achievement is possible. Education is a partnership and communication is the key.The challenge for us is to work together as achievement focussed partners. Share your thinking. Make the most of the support and services offered at the College to help you along your own ‘pathway to success’.

MEET THE COUNSELLORS

The graduation ceremony for the Open Access College and Marden Senior College Registered Training Organisation was held at the Payneham Library Complex on 10 February and attended by approximately 230 guests. Grace Portolesi, The Minister for Education and Child Development spoke about the importance of vocational training for South Australia’s development and acknowledged the excellent training provided by our RTO. The guest speaker, Sue Hickey, outlined the history and growth of the RTO. Sue’s role as a member of the RTO executive since its establishment, her role as Assistant Principal (Curriculum) at Marden Senior College together with her role as both a trainer and student of the RTO provided a valuable insight into the role of the OAC/MSC registered training organisation as a quality deliverer of qualifications in Business, Community Services, Visual Arts and Media. Sue also explained the increased recognition of VET training in the SACE and the multiple pathways that were now available.219 students graduated in 2011 and this was a significant increase from 2010 when 158 students graduated. 67 graduates were able to attend the ceremony. The presentation of the RTO’s 1000th certificate was an important milestone. The formal presentation was followed by afternoon tea where trainers, students and guests were able to share and celebrate achievements.

The 2012 SGA representatives are very excited about winning their positions this year. We are looking forward to organising many fun events this year. We would like to thank everyone for their contribution regarding the harmony day barbeque and trash and treasure. We raised over $570.70 for the SGA, which we shall put to good use for students. We would like to state now, that there WILL be a formal happening at some point this year. The amount of feedback from students regarding the prospect of a formal was staggering. We are in the process of organising themes, dates, prices, and the location of the event itself. If you have any suggestions regarding the formal or events in general, do not be afraid to approach any of us and voice your suggestions. We all look forward to your suggestions and involvement in events during the year.SGA 2012Jean Jones (Co-President), Michael Coburn (Co-President), Sruthi Pujara (Secretary), Nicole Pipinis (Marketing Officer), Ahmed Ali Abdi (Treasurer), Alex Moran, Scott O’Dea, Luke Morris, Jamie Matthews-Batanas, Jemal Mussa, Blaise Cheshi, and Rebecca Kormoch.

GRANITE ISLAND 2012

ORIENTATION DAYS

OTTO & PENNY’S SEWING CENTRE 34 Smith Street Walkerville 5081 Ph: 8342 0533

Environmental Studies and Tourism students accompanied by teachers Michelle Cordera, Jesse Duncan and Peter Allen travelled by bus to Victor Harbor to learn about the plight of the Little Penguins from a tourism and environmental perspective. Forty students braved the blustery winds and the rickety, under repair, causeway to reach the island’s Penguin Rescue Centre.Granite Island’s Little Penguin numbers have been steadily declining since the early 1990’s. Tour guide and research scientist Natalie Gilbert spoke to each group about the research into these small birds. Granite Island is an ideal nesting site for these incredible little birds. The natural crevices between and under granite boulders, as well as constructed nesting sites are ideal for breeding pairs of penguins who come ashore. Penguins choose their burrows in April/May and again in August/September. A clutch of two eggs is laid in winter or spring, two or three days apart. Male and female penguins take turns to incubate their eggs. Hatching success on

Granite Island has been increasing, in a good season three clutches of eggs may be laid. The bad news is that the number of penguins coming to the island to breed is plummeting.Tour guide, Joyce showed us the Island’s Penguin Rescue centre and explained how they were working with local communities and researchers to save injured penguins and gather more information. As researchers, penguin rescue groups, and volunteers seek answers, little penguins look like being locally extinct within a few years.A walk to the western side of the island, to experience the tranquillity of a view to the south, followed by a head wind walk back across to the mainland and lunch on the lawns of the Victor Harbor foreshore. Students will be using their field experience and their research skills to find out why.

VISIT BY ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF SA

On Friday 24 February, I had the pleasure of attending the University of Adelaide’s annual presentation to scholarships winners. Renae Chidlow was nominated by Marden Senior College to receive the prestigious Principal’s Scholarship at the end of 2011. The scholarship is valued at $5000 and students need to receive an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 90 and accept an offer to study at the University of Adelaide. Renae was a worthy recipient of this scholarship, having completed her Year 12 schooling at Marden and gaining five ‘A’ grades for her subjects. We wish Renae well as she embarks on her Commerce degree.

Evan Sierros

On Wednesday 21 March, representatives of the University of South Australia and Flinders University visited the College to discuss tertiary study programs, adult entry options, midyear intake and other study pathways available to students. The seminar was held in the Lecture Theatre and was well supported by students eager to hear about options available to them to access university study in the future.

A small group of Marden students attended the Aim For Adelaide workshop on 27 March. This workshop was specifically designed for students who hope to study at Adelaide University in the future. The workshop helped students develop their understandings in a range of key areas including:• Time management and exam preparation• How to write an outstanding essay• Tertiary education adviceFeedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive.Students who attended the workshop said:

On Thursday 15 March, the Stage 1 PLP students visited UniSA’s City East Campus. They were given a tour of the campus and had the opportunity to see how many of the Health Sciences programs operate. Students were able to see the podiatry clinic in operation as well as spend time in the “hospital ward” observing trainee nurses attend to the needs of patients. The aim of the excursion was to open students’ mind to university life, not only from an academic perspective but also in terms of the fun and social side of being a uni student.

STUDENT PATHWAY

My name is Ryan Gore and I am a graduate of Marden Senior College. Whilst attending Marden Senior College I studied geology amongst other subjects. Not long after completing this I was employed by Zonge Engineering as a field assistant which gave me an opportunity gain experience in the industry and to travel to various places around Australia. After a year of full time work I started my university degree at Adelaide University. During the first few years of university I continued to work at Zonge Engineering during summer holidays before I commenced summer vacation work at Fortescue Metals Group as a geologist at the end of my third year. I completed my geology honours degree at the end of 2011. During my final year of study, I was lucky enough to travel to India, New Zealand and Western Australia. I start work as a graduate geologist at Arrow Energy in early February 2012.
