Athletics Carnival

We were blessed to have a perfect day for our Athletics Carnival last Friday, and it was a huge success.

Our magnificent organising team, led by Mrs Bean and Mrs Chia, had thought of every organisational structure and safety aspect required to ensure all our students were able to participate, and the level of enthusiasm from students was infectious - I don’t think I have ever seen a carnival with such a high level of participation. The day would not have been a success without the huge number of volunteers who assisted time keeping, setting up, supplying cakes, barbecuing and packing and cleaning up. Our parent volunteers, who assisted as time-keepers, were outstanding. This was a huge team effort with students, teachers, support staff and parents working together to create a fantastic day.

Thank you to our many parents who assisted with our events and to all those families who came and supported students as spectators throughout the day. We look forward to announcing the winning house and to watching our students at the District Carnivals on the 29th & 31st of August.

Visible Learning

Staff attended Visible Learning professional development on Day One this term. We will be looking at how to implement and increase student learning across the whole school over the next few years. One of the key concepts which will be introduced in Mathematics and English is how students show their understanding of learning through learning intentions and success criteria. As we implement these strategies we will try and keep parents informed through our newsletter, so you will be able to share the language of learning with your children.

Returning Notes for Excursions and Incursions

Due to the time it takes to process notes and payments, we are asking all notes and payments to be returned 3 working days before the incursion or excursion takes place. This will ensure the office staff and teachers have enough time to complete the organisation requirements and ensure the safety and integrity of the event. Please ensure you support Wilberforce staff by returning notes and payment by the due date which will be on the bottom of every note.

• If a permission note and payment is not returned by the due date, students WILL NOT be able to attend the event. If you are having trouble paying for an excursion/incursion, please contact the office or myself prior to the due date.

• Notes are available on the website and SkoolBag App with a list of notes in each newsletter. Please ensure you check these sites for the notes relevant to your child.

Reports Survey

As part of a review of our assessment and reporting procedures, we are interested in hearing your opinions about our current reports. If you could complete the survey link below, it would be greatly appreciated and hopefully result in a more accurate and detailed report for your child. This survey is anonymous.

SRC and the Green Smoothie Project

The SRC has been working towards implementing the great Smoothie Challenge. This term, each class will create a smoothie recipe which will be made on Tuesdays at recess. 50c will buy both smoothies and students will get the chance to vote for their favourite each week. The eventual aim will be to have the two best smoothie recipes added to our canteen menu. Our first smoothies designed by 5/6H and 3/4R will be available next Tuesday at recess.

Our Semester 2 SRC representatives will be inducted on the 17th of August. I look forward to working with these students this semester and to hearing their opinions about our school.

Traffic around School

Last term I raised some safety concerns around picking up students after school. Unfortunately, there has been another this term. Please be tolerant and understanding towards other drivers around our school, and I thank all the parents and carers who are cautious drivers within our school zone.

Term 3 Staffing

Congratulations to Miss Dossaer and Mrs Brien who both had baby girls in the holidays. I would like to welcome Mrs Boyd and Mrs Douglas both of whom will both be working one day a week RFF. Miss Bates will be taking ICT RFF until week 6 while Mr Anthoney is on long service leave. Mr Quealey will continue to relieve as our GA until the end of Term 3 and we appreciate all his hard work, especially prior to the carnival last week.

Properties

Painters came in the holidays to paint the ceiling of the boy’s toilets and the ICT and Learning support classrooms. Funding for this came from the Department of Education. Mr Ranger and Mr Anthoney also worked very hard in their holidays designing and fitting shelving to the sports storeroom. I would like to thank them on behalf of the teachers and students as this will make equipment much more accessible and therefore increase learning in PD\H\PE.

The Share My Space initiative was a success, and we hope all those families who used our facilities in the holidays enjoyed the experience.

Thank you

Graham Wilkins

Principal

• To all those parents, grandparents and visitors, volunteers and helpers who supported our Athletics Carnival.

• To Mrs Chapple for efforts organising and coordinating TEN and the accumulation of our NESA data. • To Mr Ranger and Mr Anthoney for their volunteer work over the holidays installing the shelving. • To Mrs Tierney for organising Gymnastics. • To Ms Maunder for organising the Book Fair.

STAGE NEWS

Early Stage 1

Welcome back to Term 3! It’s hard to believe we are already half way through the year, but we know that time flies when we’re having fun! This term Kindergarten will be continuing to enjoy learning, especially in our Science unit on ‘Living Things’ where we will be hosting a chicken hatching program and visiting Taronga Zoo! We will learn how to read and interpret digital and paper maps using iPads, Google Earth and treasure hunts in Geography lessons. Our TEN journey will continue as we build number knowledge in various practical games. In English, we will explore quality texts and write personal responses with increasingly interesting vocabulary. We will continue to learn sight words and phonemes to assist us when reading and decoding unknown words. In Art, we will use mixed-media to create attractive animal artworks. We are also excited to participate in weekly Gymnastics lessons where we will learn forward rolls, monkey bar movements and safe landings. What an exciting learning adventure we have in stall!

Stage 1

Welcome back for Term 3! The teachers have planned a full term of worthwhile learning activities. We encourage the students to take responsibility to learn and progress as much as they can. Reading groups continue to be an important focus in the morning sessions. In writing, the students are practising the skills appropriate to their levels whilst gaining experience in writing for a variety of purposes. Public speaking topics for the term have been listed in homework books. TEN (Targeting Early Numeracy) groups continue in Mathematics and the topics of time, area, 3D space and mass will also be covered. Our Geography topic is 'Features of Places' and an excursion to Longneck Lagoon will complement this unit. Term 3 art activities link to this topic also. The fundamental movement skills being practised during sport are dodge, kick, two-handed strike and leap. In Personal Development and Health, the unit 'Growing Good Friends' will be explored as consolidation of the Life Education visit in Term 2. Child Protection lessons will be taught this term. These mandatory lessons are an important priority as they help children to identify dangerous or uncomfortable situations and to seek help from a trustworthy adult. The four main topics to be covered are relationships and trust, warning signals, safe/ unsafe situations and No, Go, Tell.

Stage 2

Welcome back to yet another busy and exciting term. This term Stage 2 will be continuing on their Soundwaves journey, by focusing on transferring their learned spelling words and strategies into their own writing. In Geography lessons we will be learning about The Earth’s Environment, and what we can do to protect it. Our Science unit this term is Earth and Space. During Art we will be learning all about the famous artist Kandinsky. In PDHPE lessons students in Stage 2 will participate in Child Protection lessons. These lessons help children to identify dangerous or uncomfortable situations and to seek help from trustworthy adults. Some lessons may involve talking about private parts of the body. The Child Protection lessons have been developed by the Department of Education and they are an important priority for schools. We trust that you will support your child's participation in the program. Please contact the school if you have any questions. It is mandatory for all NSW DoE schools to teach Child Protection lessons. Delivery of these lessons will be via the classroom teacher. This year’s topics will include:

Term 3 Week 2: Rights and Responsibilities/Abuse of power-Bribes and Threats

Term 3 Week 3: Bullying

Term 3 Week 4: Recognising Abuse: Physical and Sexual

Term 3 Week 5: Feelings and Warning Signals

Term 3 Week 6: Feel Think Act: No, Go-Assertiveness

Stage 3

During Term 3, Stage 3 will be learning about Asia in Geography. We will be exploring many of the countries in this region and study some of their traditional cultures. The students will be working on a project, with most of this being completed at school. If you have any posters, travel brochures or items that represent an Asian country, they would be greatly appreciated for classroom use, and be well looked after.

This term is starting off as a big sporting term. Having completed a successful Athletics Carnival, last Friday, we look forward to the Field Events, this week. Next Friday, 10th August, many Stage 3 students will be participating in the Milo Cup Cricket Gala Day. Gymnastics lesson have commenced and all the students are participating well and enjoying the challenges of this program.

In Science, the students will be studying the topic, ‘Electricity’. The students will conduct experiments and investigate the many uses of electricity.

Thank you to all the students who participated in our annual Year 6 fundraising theme day. Everyone looked great in their pyjamas. We raised $1455.00 to contribute to the Year 6 gift for the school.

LIBRARY

Book Fair

The Book Fair will be running at school from Monday 6th until Wednesday, 8th August. Children and parents will have the opportunity to purchase books and novelty items from the School Library before and after school. The school receives a commission in either books or cash as a result of this venture. All materials for sale are supplied by Scholastic who provides our Book Club.

Children previewed books today and brought home a “Wish List” of titles of books and their prices that they found interesting and may ask to purchase. During Library time all classes have been told that they should do some small jobs around the house to earn the money and that most of the books at Book Fair will be purchased for the Library for them to borrow at a later date.

On the reverse side of the wish list there is a slip for credit card purchases if you choose to use this method of payment. We will have an EFTPOS machine available at the Book Fair.

Purchases from the Book Fair can be made on:

Monday 6th August – 9am to 10am; 3pm to 4pm

Tuesday, 7th August – 9am to 9:30am; 3pm to 4pm

Wednesday 8th August – 9am to 9:30am; 3pm to 4pm

If your family would like to donate a book to the Library, a book plate will be added inside the book acknowledging your donation.

Thank you to the parent volunteers who have offered to assist with setting up and sales. We look forward to a successful Book Fair.

Book Character Dress Up

To coincide with Open Day, we will be holding a ‘Book Character celebration’ next Tuesday, 7th August. Children are encouraged to dress as their favourite book character. To enter the draw for prizes, students need to bring either a copy or a picture of the book with their character in it. There is no gold coin donation for this day.
