Equity Markets Round Up: March 2019

• GlobalequitieshadavolatilemonthasmarketsreboundedfromthelowsatthebeginningofMarch.TheUSFedmeetingdeliveredadovishoutcomevs.expectations.AlargemajorityofTheFederalOpenMarketCommitteeparticipantsnowexpectnoratehikesthisyearascomparedtoamedianprojectionoftwohikesinDecember;the Fed also slowed down the reduction of its Balance Sheet (to USD 15 BN per month from May, and stopping inSeptember).TheUStreasuryyieldsfellinMarch(the10yearbondyieldwasdown32bpsinthemonth).ThefallinglobalbondyieldspushedinvestmentintoEMs.InAsia-Pacex-JapanCYTDinflowsintoequityhavebeenUSD20Billion.

• Afterabadstarttotheyear,IndianequitymarketswerethebestperformingamongtheEmergingMarket(EM)packinMarch.TheMSCIIndia(USD)indexwasup8.6%inthemonth,whileMSCIEM(USD)indexwasup0.7%.ThiswasdrivenbystrongFPIinflows(NetinflowsofaboutRs.34,000croresduringthemonth),de-escalationingeopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan and also as some opinion polls indicated the possibility of the incumbentgovernmentretainingpower.

• Indomesticflows,Mutualfundsbroketheirstreakofnetinflowsafter31consecutivemonths.MFssoldRs.7626croresinequitieswhileInsurancecompaniesaboutRs.8400croresofequitiesinMarch.

• Inindustrynews,consumerdemandforautomobilesremainedsoftinMarch.Inventoryfortwo-wheelercompaniesparticularlyremainshigh.Anecdotally,evenconsumerstaplescompanieshavementionedofamoderationingrowth.Cementstocksralliedduringthemonthascementpriceswereupinmostgeographies.Cementvolumegrowthhasbeenabout7-8%inFY19drivenbyinfrastructurespendsandhousingdemand.

Equity Market Outlook

• Themarketsareexpectedtobevolatileintherunuptotheelectionsandtheresults.Weexpectmarketmomentumto be sustained at least till the elections after there may be short term moves depending on the government formation.ThemacroeconomicsituationforFY20especiallyonthefiscalsideseemstobesomewhatconcerningastaxrevenueswillhavetogrowsubstantiallyinanenvironmentofrelativelymodestgrowth.Weexpectthatthegovernmentmayimplementthee-waybillsandinvoicematchingtoplugleakagesintheGSTsystem.

• Looking beyond short term volatility, earnings growth for theNifty 50 companies are expected to improvesubstantially in FY 20 however, as it is driven largely by corporate facing banks, whose fundamentals are improving. Constructionmaterials and pharmaceuticals are also expected to show decent growth. Earningsgrowthinconsumerstaplesisexpectedbesteady.

• InitsMarchmeetingtheUSFOMCdecidedtokeepthefederalfundsrateunchangedat2.25-2.5%andsignaleditsintenttokeepratesunchangedthroughCY2019.MedianprojectionssuggestthattheFedseesonlyoneratehikein2020till2021.PostthistherewassteepfallinUStreasuryyieldsatthelongendwithflatteningoftheyieldcurve.ThetenUStreasuryyieldendedthemontha2.41,31bpslowerthanpreviousmonth.

• FebWPIdatareleasecameat2.93%,tadhigherthanthepreviousreadingof2.76%.CPIforFebcameat2.57%comparedto1.97%inpreviousmonth.

• JanIndustrialproduction(IIP)growthcameat1.7%comparedto2.6%forpreviousmonth.

• FiscaldatareleasedfortheperiodApriltoFebruary2019showsthatat8.51lakhcroresdeficit,itstandsat134.2%ofthefullyeartarget.

Yield To Maturity -TheYieldtoMaturityortheYTMistherateofreturnanticipatedonabondifhelduntilmaturity.YTMisexpressedasanannualrate.TheYTMfactorsinthebond’scurrentmarketprice,parvalue,couponinterestrateandtimetomaturity.

SIP -SIPorsystematicinvestmentplanworksontheprincipleofmakingperiodicinvestmentsofafixedsum.Itworkssimilartoarecurringbankdeposit.Forinstance,aninvestormayoptforanSlPthatinvests` 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.

NAV -TheNAVorthenetassetvalueisthetotalassetvalueperunitofthemutualfundafterdeductingallrelatedandpermissibleexpenses.TheNAViscalculatedattheendofeverybusinessday.Itisthevalueatwhichtheinvestorentersorexitsthemutualfund.

Benchmark - A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment performance ofmutual funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-YearG-sec.

Sharpe Ratio -TheSharpeRatio, namedafter its founder, theNobel LaureateWilliamSharpe, is ameasureof risk-adjusted returns. It iscalculatedusingstandarddeviationandexcessreturntodeterminerewardperunitofrisk.

Beta -Betaisameasureofaninvestment’svolatilityvis-a-visthemarket.Betaoflessthan1meansthatthesecuritywillbelessvolatilethanthemarket.Abetaofgreaterthan1impliesthatthesecurity’spricewillbemorevolatilethanthemarket.

AUM - AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund oranyinvestmentfirm.

Holdings -Theholdingsortheportfolioisamutualfund’slatestorupdatedreportedstatementofinvestments/securities.Theseareusuallydisplayedintermsofpercentagetonetassetsortherupeevalueorboth.Theobjectiveistogiveinvestorsanideaofwheretheirmoneyisbeinginvestedbythefundmanager.
