George K. Paoa, singer and pianist whose performance of mellow old Hawaiian, hapa-haole and light jazz music was part of vacationers' romantic memories of Hawaii for more than 40 years, died Monday Apr. 24, 2000 while on a vacation cruise. Paoa, 65, was with his wife, Pua, and 28 other friends and family members aboard the Holland American liner Volendam which left Miami last week for a Panama Canal cruise. He collapsed after taking a one-mile walk around the ship's deck, said his daughter, Alika Kapoi of Maui. The shipboard medical team was unable to revive him. She said he took medication for diabetes and high cholesterol but had no history of heart trouble. Paoa spent most of his professional career as a performer at hotel restaurants and lounges on Maui, including the Peacock restaurant at the former Royal Lahaina at Kaanapali and the Maui Prince at Makena. He has presided at the piano bar at The Lodge at Koele on Lanai for the past seven years. "I used to see people listen to his music and it seemed like they would fall in love again," said Kapoi. "There would be couples that the music meant something to, it put them in a different aura, they looked romantically in love." Paoa grew up on Oahu, a relative of the Kahanamoku family, and graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1952. He was a star quarterback and went onto play football at Pasadena City College.

Steel guitar artist Henry Allen, who has played with Paoa in musical groups for decades, said Paoa became a Honolulu policeman after school. "He worked with the police glee club, that's how he got started. He left the police because of music and was full time in music ever since. Allen composed music for and produced George Paoa's album "Walking in the Sand" in 1994. Two of Paoa's six children, George Kapulenui Paoa Jr. and Kinau Hicks, both professional musicians, sang on the album. Paoa began his career in Waikiki. He played with Martin Denny and was in a trio at an International Market Place nightclub in the 1960s. He and his wife worked for some years on the West Coast in a group called the Kona Coasters. Soon after the opening of the Kaanapali resort, the Paoas moved to Maui and focussed their careers there. Entertainer Jeff Apaka said: "So much love came out of his voice, he was very much of the romantic, hapa-haole era of music. He had the whole room in the palm of his hand, local people as well as visitors, you want to sit all night long and listen to him." Funeral arrangements are pending.

Martin Pence, identified much of his life with the federal court system, died yesterday May 29, 2000 at his home in Maunawili. He was 95. Pence retired only four months ago, on Jan. 31, after nearly four decades as senior U.S. District Judge. He had been sworn in on Oct. 6, 1961, the first federal judge confirmed here after statehood, following his appointment by President John F. Kennedy. Previously, Pence had been a territorial judge and county attorney on the Big Island. At the time of Pence's retirement, Senior District Judge Samuel P. King called him "one of the great judges," a specialist in antitrust issues and the guiding force in creating a separate federal courthouse. "We wanted to name the new courthouse after him, and he wouldn't let us, even though he was responsible for us getting it," King said then. Pence's antitrust cases at one time numbered more than 400, including concrete-pipe manufacturers fixing prices and a pharmaceutical patent-infringement case. He also presided over the bankruptcy phase of court proceeding involving high-profile investment swindler Ronald Rewald. "I've always looked upon him as a mentor and role model, as he has been for many lawyers who worked for him and appeared before him," Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald T.Y. Moon said today. Moon, who clerked for him in 1965, said Pence will be remembered for "his great expertise in the management of his courtroom and his skill as a settlement judge." He leaves a legacy of "his knowledge, wisdom and skills as a lawyer and trial judge," Moon said. Behind a sometimes gruff exterior, Pence had a "terrific sense of humor," Moon said. He also "was a very kind and considerate person. He never intended to make anyone feel uncomfortable." Former Star-Bulletin Editor A.A. Republican Sen. Hiram Fong, then Hawaii's senior U.S. senator, lobbied heavily for a Republican judge, Smyser recalled. In what he described as a tradeoff, Smyser said Fong got his GOP judge in C. Nils Tavares, a former territorial attorney general, while Kennedy and the Democrats got Pence, a Democrat from Hilo. "All our federal judges have been highly respected," Smyser said, noting that Pence "started that tradition." Hailing from Kansas, Pence moved to the Big Island in 1930 to be a claims adjuster. He became a Democratic leader in a largely Republican-controlled judicial system. Last month, Pence celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with his second wife, Eleanor. "He had a deteriorating heart condition, and he was 95," Suzy Hemmings, Pence's youngest daughter, said last night. "But he made it to the year 2000! Charles J. Pietsch III, 57, well-known Honolulu businessman, died Tuesday Apr. 25, 2000 in Vista, Calif. The Honolulu-born Pietsch was a partner in Associates Four and co-owner of Waimea Falls Park, where Waimea Falls Adventure Park is located on a portion of the overall property. Associates Four retains an interest in the adventure park at Waimea and also Sea Life Park in East Honolulu. Pietsch's partner in Associates Four, John Spierling, described him as "very energetic, very forceful and a doer," active in a number of community endeavors. He also served on the boards of Queen's Hospital and Hawaii Pacific University and was very interested in those organizations. "It will be a loss both for the partnership and the community," Spierling said. Pietsch was a Punahou graduate and alumnus of Syracuse University. He also served as an Army officer in Europe. He was in banking with Wells Fargo in California before returning home to Honolulu where he went to work for his father, Charles Pietsch Jr., in Bishop Corp. His father had branched out into subdivision development, home building and apartment building. The elder Pietsch also built three hotels in Hawaii, including the Kahala Hilton, now known as the Kahala Mandarin Oriental. Additionally, the enterprising father had rescued Sea Life Park and taken it out of bankruptcy, also acquiring Waimea Falls Park. Son Charles III became involved in these ventures. Charles III was president of the Waimea Arboretum Foundation and also chaired the Historic Hawaii Foundation. He was a trustee of the

Hawaii Maritime Center and owner of a valuable stamp collection. Funeral services are pending.

Saul Price dies. Satellite imagery and radar-based forecasts are what weather watchers have come to expect, but when Saul Price was an official weather researcher in Hawaii, it was hands-on meshing of mathematics and maps. Price retired in 1992 after 47 years with the National Weather Service. A year later, he said in an interview, "It's a terrible time to leave meteorology" as new technology brings accuracy to storm tracking and rainfall predicting. He spent 42 years in Hawaii, a resource not only for news reporters preparing weather stories but for government agencies and agriculture and other businesses. Price and Edith, his wife of 52 years, moved to Sarasota, Fla., after his retirement. He died yesterday Sept 28, 2000 at the age of 83. "Back when he started, there was no such thing as satellites," said Richard Hagemeyer, National Weather Service Pacific Regional director. "Communications were relatively sparse, the data we had available didn't begin to compare with today. We sat with pen in hand and analyzed maps here. "We now get volumes of data generated in Washington." Price had many opportunities to experience the thrill of new technology during his career. He was on the team at a Kaena Point station monitoring output from the first Tyros weather satellite launched on April 1, 1960. He said later when meteorologists saw those first photographs, they were so excited they wanted to publish them immediately. Forecasters previously had to rely on scattered observations from ships and islands for Pacific forecasts. In 1957, he was assigned to the Mauna Loa Observatory, where measurement of atmospheric carbon dioxide reveals global warming and climate changes. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also was a research associate at the University of Hawaii Geophysics Institute. Hagemeyer said: "Over the years, Saul created a wealth of knowledge. He had a lot of jobs, starting as hydrologist at the old forecast office. He was the first climatologist for Hawaii. In later years, he was staff meteorologist for a number of years. "He was our institutional memory," said Hagemeyer. "He could answer a spectrum of questions about Hawaii weather. When somebody needed information that most people had forgotten, Saul had the answer. He was very quiet, very thorough ... a marvelous person and one of most gentle souls I've known." The Prices were members of Temple Emanu-El, said Ida Ringel, a friend. "Saul would like

to talk about the weather. He was very bright, but quiet, not effusive. He was a sweet, likable person." Price was born in New York and was a graduate of New York City College. He is survived by his wife, Edith H.; son Robert of Honolulu and daughter Jacqueline Baumberger of Switzerland. Patricia Klein Putman, former UH associate dean, dies. Patricia Klein Putman, former associate dean of legal and legislative affairs at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and longtime human rights supporter, died Dec. 5, 2000 in Honolulu. She was 76. Putman moved to Honolulu in 1959 after graduating from the University of California’s Boalt School of Law, where she was one of seven women in the class of 180. Her first job was as the attorney for the state Legislative Reference Bureau. In July 1972, she moved to the UH medical school and was instrumental in the conversion of the school from a two- to four-year program, said

former Dean Terence Rogers. Rogers met Putman and her husband, Edison, while the three were college students in California. "She was extremely bright and feisty, but didn’t get into fights for the hell of it. She really knew the law," said Rogers. "Like any big organization, there was a potential trouble all the time, and she cooled them. We didn’t have any whiz-bang legal problems largely because she was there." In addition to her work at the school, Putman was involved in many community efforts. She is called the architect of Hawaii’s Prepaid Health Care Act of 1974, which mandated health care for private sector workers. The bill was the first of its kind in the nation. Putman worked to establish legislation that called for review and mediation of alleged malpractice to eliminate frivolous suits and forestall expensive litigation. She also helped draft legislation to recognize women’s changing roles and she assisted in the formation of the Rape Crisis Prevention Center, the forerunner of domestic violence programs here. Putman retired in 1984. Putman is survived by her husband, Edison; son, Edison K.; daughter, Jennifer; brothers, Ervine and Lawrence Klein. Lawrence Klein was awarded a Nobel Prize in economics in 1980. No services are planned. The family asks that contributions be made to the University of Hawaii Foundation for the John A.
