With reference to the Governing Board Trustee Role Profile in mind, briefly describe why you are applying for this position. I always knew that working for the benefit of others was important to me, but only during the deep soul searching experience I went through in the last several months I realized how this IS a major driving force in my life. Luckily enough, I still had a lot of good friends active in CISV International including Juanca (COL), Sarah (USA), Tuca (BRA), Max and Ico (ITA) who kept me up to speed about the changes and challenges emerged since my last AIM as a participant and IEC candidate in 2010. Hearing their stories I realized how extremely relevant would be to CISV International the skills I had learned in my professional journey.

As I decided to step up again, I have been thinking a lot about the future of the organization as well as the invaluable friendships I established in my 10+ years of involvement at the International level. While I acknowledge the meaningful progresses that CISV International has done, I still see a lot of potential that could be unleashed if we could…

1. …further leverage technologies and financial tools to unburden the international office and the chapters to support their growth, vs. increasing the complexity of our organization

2. …minimize the time and energy volunteers spend trying to explain externally (and internally) who we are and what we do by finding better alignment on what we really stand for (e.g. vision and purpose)

3. …foster innovation in the field of peace education by continuously trying new approaches

Please comment on your ski l ls in the fol lowing areas. In some cases, it may be easier for you to describe your approach or give an example. Enter as much as you like; the boxes will expand. a) Interpersonal skills People that know me can attest that I am a very direct and candid person. I like to build working relationships on top of real personal relationships and I am not afraid of talking about the challenging topics, whether they are complicated financial problems or personal situations.

It's only with such approach that in my professional capacity I could get to know senior management of Fortune 500, gain their trust, and eventually tell them how to completely change their organization and processes after 8 weeks.

CISV certainly jumpstarted the development these skills, starting with the village I participated at in 1993.

b) Listening and communication My CISV experiences both dug the foundation of my listening/communication skills, as well as gave me the courage to seek challenging contexts in which to test them by experimenting new approaches. Every experiment has been fascinating and I cannot help but sharing some of those most meaningful to me: the interaction with the multitude of characters that live in the cosmopolitan NYC, the silent cohabitation with the self-selected set of individuals who would decide got for 10 days to meditate in the desert, strategizing about future businesses with students/classmates getting a graduate business degree, the brainstorming of ideas to save lives with individuals who choose to volunteer in Africa. Each of these experiences gave me a new tool to either listen/communicate or both.

Based on all my experiences, communication can only happen if two preconditions are met:

1. You should establish a positive interpersonal relation with each stakeholder you involve, directly or indirectly, trying to understand where they are coming from.

2. It should be clear who should be involved in what conversation and who shouldn't: all the right stakeholders should be included, NOT ALL the possible stakeholders.

c) Teamwork/ability to work within a team I have never been in a context in which teamwork was not required. At HP the team goal was to write software to simplify the life of life insurance office workers. At BCG it was to design the best processes to manage Fortune 500 companies. In CISV, it is to plant the seed of love for the world into all people getting in touch with the organization.

All of these experiences taught me to flex in order to enable the team to achieve the shared goals. This is the attitude required also in the CISV international governing board.

I certainly cannot hide my excitement to potentially work with some amazing people and old friends. I believe that my friendships and personal networks with multiple Governing Board members as well across CISV worldwide would certainly be a valuable asset to strengthen even more the group around its objectives. d) Leadership CISV has been the strongest influence I ever had in this direction. My trajectory started from the JC experience: while I was mentored into that by the leaders of the Ferrara chapter (thank you Silvia for that), I quickly and autonomously began directing my trajectory to increasingly challenging roles: Local Junior Rep., board member and minicamp leader/staff/director; National Junior Rep. and National board member and JC Trainer; village, YM, step up camp staff/director; IJR and full member of Village and External Communication committees.

All my leadership experiences whether internal or external to CISV, were instrumental to develop my own view on leadership, as well as applying as team leader, mentoring more junior colleagues at HP and BCG. To me leaderships means 3 things:

1. Be an inspiring example

2. Be a stimulus to always further improve oneself

3. Be a facilitator able to "get out of the way" as well as remove obstacles from the group's path, not only it's immediate team.

e) Organization and time management Organizational skills have always been one of my strengths. Without those it would have been impossible for me to run/direct any CISV camp. It would have also been impossible to deliver software on time/budget to HP’s clients or support those CEOs trusting BCG to design and present

their new strategy to their investors on that very specific day of the year...

While doing the above in those demanding professional contexts, I also managed to find time for myself, my friends, my family and volunteering. I kept planning Mosaic activities when working for HP in Milano (2008), I have been and advisor to the JB of the New York chapter (2013), and now is time to commit to do even more. f) Reliability/sense of responsibility Keeping my word is one of my highest priorities, full stop. Commitments for me are sacred, as is friendship. This holds true despite any "relaxed" or "chilled out" attitude you may perceive; and yes, I am I very calm and chilled dude.

I am committed to this approach across all aspects of my life with great conviction, reinforced by the results I achieved. It enabled me to manage and execute upon multi-million dollar contracts for my employers. It created enough trust for CISV parents to allow me to be their “surrogate”, as leader, staff and camp director multiple times. I think at this last example as really the most significant endorsement I ever had as a person. g) Cultural sensitivity I have been lucky enough to have lived so many intercultural experiences and I know that most people in the world are in a very different place. Starting with the village I participated to 1993, CISV gave me the chance of learning about a number of places, cultures and people that much older people won't have even dreamed of. This was even more evident as I explored the world without CISV's safety net. I lived in Italy, California, Spain, and New York. I travelled in most of Europe, South East Asia, Australia, Central and South America, Middle East, and Africa.

Among all experiences, living, studying, volunteering, and working in New York City has been certainly one of the most valuable. Just being there means to learn how to practically deal daily with tens of different nationalities, cultural backgrounds, socio-economic contexts, sexual preferences, and spiritual practices.

This exploration enabled me to identify two concepts that now shape my perception of "cultural sensitivity", and maybe they will be interesting/helpful to you too:

1. Eastern spiritual practices (Buddhism) are very aligned with the open and peaceful view that CISV has of the world: I became Buddhist a few months ago and now I do meditate every day.

2. Languages shape emotions and more general the way we think: I began to miss speaking Italian and Spanish as when I do those actions I am a different person and feel different emotions.

h) Ability to think analytically, exercise sound judgement and make decisions This it has has been my job description for a long time. Initially I did that in the technology space, then in the strategy-consulting world. It is the main promise of management consulting firms such as BCG and McKinsey. I indeed successfully dealt with multiple complex problems for BCG clients, identified all problems’ subcomponents, relevant stakeholders, understood their perspectives, collected and analyzed the data, then synthesized fact based recommendations and promoted them within the client organizations.

In this process two things are key to remember:

1. When you make a decision, the work is just getting started: without appropriate action plan, timeline, resources, indicators AND some action (e.g. pilot tests) all the work will be wasted. It would also be wasted if we want to make a recommendation so perfect that we would never stop working on it, or we want really everybody to be able to give some input…

Page 6: Teo (Matteo Zanella) Governing Board Candidate Documents - CISV International 2014

in the strategy consulting world it is called “analysis-paralysis”.

2. It’s only by doing that you really learn what’s the right solution: things can look great on paper, but as you try to implement them, they might not work. Also, as the environment changes all the time (e.g. external forces, technology innovation, economic trends, internal strengths and maturity of the organization, etc.), the right solution changes over time as well

i) Anything else you would like to share It is a very exciting time for me because multiple forces converging in my life: my professional experiences, my passion for the organization and its mission, the great challenges and time of change for CISV, and the presence of several good friends in key parts of the organization (not only the Governing Board).

I am ready to contribute again to CISV, giving everything that I got: my energy, my skills, all my networks, and more. An example of the type of contacts I could bring to the table through my BCG and MBA networks, is the Nobel Peace Price Mohamed Yunus. I recently met his collaborator Hans Reitz (successful social entrepreneur) who mentioned how interested is Prof. Yunus would be very interested in talking to youth about social entrepreneurship. Hans is also very interested in organizing special youth activities in Germany as part of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall celebration.

Finally, a very important note about this election: while any election should focus on identifying the individuals that could “do the job”, I believe that it’s even more true for CISV today. CISV is going through a major change and only individuals with the skills to carry on the current priorities can help this process. I urge you all to think hard about each candidate and try to evaluate who of those individuals will be able to best face the upcoming.

This form is to be completed by the referee and sent directly to the CISV International Office at [email protected] no later than 15 May in the year of the election. Full name of candidate: Matteo Zanella How long have you known the candidate and in what capacity? I supervised Matteo Zanella at BCG in New York. We worked together for 6 months on a very complex organizational review for a very large international financial institution. We collaborated on other efforts after this project, with me always seeking Matteo out for joint projects Using the scale below, please comment on the applicant in the following areas:

Outstanding / High / Acceptable / Below Average Interpersonal skills Outstanding Listening and communication skills High Teamwork/ability to work within a team: Outstanding Organization and time management Outstanding Reliability/sense of responsibility Outstanding Cultural sensitivity Outstanding Ability to think analytically, exercise sound judgement and make decisions: Outstanding Have you seen the Governing Board Trustee Role Profile, which describes the position for this the candidate is applying? Yes, he shared it with me. Would you recommend this individual as a Governing Board Trustee of CISV International?

I would enthusiastically recommend Matteo Zanella for membership on the Governing Board of

CISV International. I have seen him excel in client engagements, communication, and overall

problem solving. He leverages his expertise and puts in whatever time and effort is necessary to

reach the best possible outcome. I am certain these traits would significantly contribute to the

growth and development of your organization.

Matteo stood out in our group for his leadership and professionalism. He has the ability to think

ahead to gain insight into an overall problem, and proactively identify and address potential

issues. His resourcefulness and tenacity in looking for potential solutions made him a key

contributor to the team. Matteo follows a very practical approach to work. He thinks about the

process several weeks ahead, which allows him to address both content and process issues pro-

actively. Because he had thought through these processes, often before anybody else on the team

did, we were able to deliver on the project despite the very tight timeline. Matteo is also able to

Page 9: Teo (Matteo Zanella) Governing Board Candidate Documents - CISV International 2014

handle many tasks at the same time, having a very high level of output, while simultaneously

being highly reliable and staying on schedule. For example, he ran preparation for several

workshops simultaneously, and at the same time found time to provide guidance to the client on

initiatives we no longer formally supported

Matteo is a very confident communicator comfortably engaging with clients at any level. He is also

able to respectfully and professionally push back when necessary in conversations both with the

client and more senior managers. He both has a well-developed point of view, based on both fact

and reason. Matteo also actively listens and evolves his perspective based on others'

contributions. His strength in communication goes beyond conversations and really develops

relationships. He consistently demonstrated outstanding client interaction skills, maintaining a

high level of engagement and establishing very strong relationships with a large number of clients,

including senior ones. In particular, he was able to have excellent rapport with senior managers at

a time when their attention was monopolized by other events in the organization, and was able to

get the input he needed to keep our project on track while maintaining the relationship. Matteo

achieved this by clearly explaining objectives of our effort to the clients, making the clients feel

valued for their contributions, using their time efficiently and energetically following up on

outstanding issues.

Most of all, Matteo is an excellent collaborator, both within a team and with clients. He has a very

energetic "can do" attitude that both served the client, and created positive energy across the

team in both formal and casual settings. No matter what his own work load was, he always found

time to support his team members whenever needed. His team contribution was outstanding, and

was a key factor in our success. Matteo also brings a high level of professionalism along with his

positive attitude. He is reliable and timely, gets things done whatever that takes with no need for

the manager to regularly check in. He is always prepared with thoughtful questions and ideas, and

is willing to adjust expectations and the product to get the outcome exactly right for the client.

Any other comments: I am confident that Matteo would be an excellent member of your board. He would bring energy,

thoughtfulness, detailed analysis, and strong self-motivation to the work. He would work well with

any combination of people, helping them reach their highest potential as a team. In particular, I

am certain he would help the governing board develop strong relationships across the

organization and in outreach to other groups.

I met Matteo (Teo) at the International Board Meeting in Cincinnati in 2001. I got to know

him best while he was IJR, from 2003 – 2005.

Have you seen the Governing Board Trustee Role Profile, which describes the position for

this the candidate is applying?

Yes.

Would you recommend this individual as a Governing Board Trustee of CISV

International?

I am pleased to see that after a few years away from CISV, Matteo Zanella is motivated to

join the Governing Board. He returns with fresh perspectives, particularly informed by his

work in the business and technology communities. He can carry this willingness to use

technology as a tool for inclusion into the Governing Board, to strengthen CISV as a

cohesive community of like-minded people, working together to impact the world. This is

not only helpful, but essential in our new managing structure that could easily lose the

connection to volunteers and chapters without care for communication and use of

technological tools.

Matteo spent many years as a very involved junior, including serving as IJR. As IJR, Matteo

helped connect regions through technological innovations like JB Pedia, and expanded the

IJB team to include more voices. This was particularly important during the year that AIM

was held in Israel, to develop juniors and the international Junior Branch community when

not all juniors could attend the IJBC and AIM. While it is always valuable to have new

people in CISV, it is also comforting to have volunteers at a high level who have grown

through CISV and integrated it into their lives.

Matteo’s comfort with financial and business matters can help CISV plan ahead for

financial stability and growth. In my many years working to start new CISV National

Associations and grow chapters, the need for financial support has been a common

thread. Matteo’s ability to work with data and the business community, and connect this

to CISV values, will help us maximize our resources and professionalism. This is also an

important step in our goal of promoting diversity. With a better financial future, CISV can

work to bridge cultural differences brought about by socioeconomic limitations as well as

those stemming from national differences.

Any other comments:

If you meet Matteo, you will find him to be relaxed and friendly, willing to listen, and

always ready with a new idea or solution to a problem that will get results. I think he

would be a valuable addition to the Governing Board team.
