An Ordinary Reflection God Is Calling

Alice Camille reflects on the first reading from Genesis this Sunday in This Transforming Word with these thoughts:

God called to the Man: “Where are you?”He said, “I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. And I hid.”God calls, and Adam hides. Something has gone wrong with a relationship that used to be deeply intimate. Pretty soon this becomes the pattern for all relationships that develop holes. A family member, friend, colleague comes looking for us. And we find a place to hid.

We hide from others when we’re ashamed of our circum-stances. And we hide when we have secrets we have no in-tention of sharing. We disappear when we’ve become some-one unrecognizable. We go on the run when we are afraid of being found out.

But if we go on the lam when God comes calling, that won’t be the end of the matter. God will come looking for us, and the Creator of every hiding place knows full well where to look. Sooner or later, we’re going to have that conversation with our First Friend. Might as well be now.

Is there something you need to say to God, or per-haps that God has been trying to say to you?

DABBING WITH THE PEN! Do you enjoy reading and hearing poetry shared? Are you looking for some time to savor a good story or chuckle over someone’s thoughts about everyday life? Have you ever read something that led

you to write down your thoughts on what you understood about the author’s message

or what feelings got your attention? We are gathering friends, neighbors, new people, young and old to enjoy each other’s company and share one another’s writings. It is not a class on writing, nor a place to critique anyone’s ideas. It is simply a time to listen, share, offer an image, and feel encouraged. Our next gathering date will be Monday, June 11 at 6:30 PM in the rectory on Or-chard Street. We had a great evening the first time, join us as we gather again!

This week we celebrate the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua. We usually associate St. Anthony with prayers for intercession when we have lost something. But St. Anthony was also a compelling preach-er. And his message was often against greed and for charity towards the poor. That earned

him the title of “Friend of the Poor.” Your challenge this week is to be a friend of the poor in your community. What can you doindividually, as a family, as a group of friendsto help someone in poverty? Choose a corporal work of mercy and respond by feeding the hungry, giv-ing drink to the thirsty, or sheltering the homeless!

Summertime

“Summertime and the living is easy.” That’s what the favorite old song says. The living may

be easy, but often the giving is not. Summer collec-tions often drop significantly in our parish because of vacation travel, sports schedules and other activities that cause parishioners to attend Mass in other parish-es. If you would like to make your giving easy and con-sistent this summer, please consider our electronic giv-ing option. If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe and secure way of giving, please contact the parish office 5703446159 or check out our website at stjnparish.weshareonline.org.

FESTIVALFUNDCOLLECTION

Please help if you can to help defray the everrising costs of Festival expenses. Thank you.

Second collection this weekend June 9/10

STJN: SOCIAL JUSTICE NOW The FOOD Pantry serves MANY people in our local ar-ea. Collecting food items on “2nd Sunday Food Sun-day” helps give the pantry a boost, but donations are ALWAYS welcome! Baskets are located in the back of both churches or items may be brought to the parish office throughout the week. The pantry is open on Tues-day afternoons from 13pm, and is sponsored by Catholic Social Services. Needed: Peanut butter, jellies, rice, canned beans and vegetables, dry milk, canned meats, pasta, sauce, cereal etc.. PLEASE check expiration dates on food items!!

C.I.C. Dinner: Once a month our parish is committed to providing a meal for those at C.I.C. C.I.C offers a hot meal, a place to shower and a place of safety. The 3rd Saturday of every month is our day to pro-vide a meal. Signup boards are available in the back of both churches or call Terry 4301690 or Ann 6143633. Our June date is Saturday June 16th. With many family celebrations happening this time of year, if you have “extra” food from your celebrations, consider donating food to either C.I.C or to St. Francis Soup Kitchen.

Gardeners: We are looking for a few people who like to garden and would be willing to help plant some of our summer flowers! We have hydrangeas and beautiful Ger-ber daisies that need to be planted in the next week as well as the “Spring” flowers that need to be cut back. If you can help, please call Sister Suzie as soon as possible. Both church properties need to be done. A great oppor-tunity to offer your time!

V O L U N T E E R S N E E D E D: Wehave a need for volunteers to help with cleaning the church. Help with sweeping entrance ways, dusting the sanctuary, straightening the books, and picking up any trash in the pews, etc. One can volunteer as an individual or a group. Please contact

Father Michael as soon as possible.

CREA T I V E GARDEN ING :

We don’t have a community garden, but we have a GREAT creative way to grow food! Has that peeked your interest? This is a project that can be done by adults, teens, families everyone! Now do we have your curiosity? If we all do a little bit, WE can help make a differ-ence feeding the hungry in our area. It takes ONE LARGE gardening pot, soil, plants and love! Contact Sister Suzie and see how you can help feed others!

Prayer Shawl “Hands of Hope”

Ministry. Thank you to all who have

requested these gifts of love and pray-ers! They make great gifts for Father’s Day or to honor a graduate. As our young people head off to college, a prayer shawl can be a source of comfort. To all of our knitters, you are awesome. We appreciate your willingness to continue creating these special blankets which are so appreciated. New summer projects are being discussed, next meeting is June 20th.

LEADERSHIP JUNE 10, 2018

TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

After serving faithfully in St. John Neumann Parish, Fr. John Ruth is being transferred by Bishop Bambera to St. Patrick’s Parish in Scranton. This has been Fr. John’s sec-ond time serving in South Scranton. He served previously as chaplain at Mercy Hospital and lived in residence at the then Nativity Parish. He is in his 10th year of serving as Associate Pastor, with primary ministry to bring the Hispanic/Latino community together. He has encouraged a wonderful group of men and women ministers in many capacities. We wish him the best in his new venture and look forward to continuing the vision of becoming a unit-ed parish “building a deeper spirituality through loving neighbor and witnessing the Gospel to the world”

Joining myself, Sr. Suzie, and Deacon Al on our ministeri-al team will be Fr. Ryan Glenn. Fr. Ryan was ordained this Saturday by Bishop Bambera. He is from St. Jude’s Parish in Mountaintop where his grandparents eventually migrated to from Cuba. He will celebrate his First Mass at St. Jude’s and will also offer a special mass with his el-derly grandparents. After college, Ryan went to Notre Dame to pursue a degree in lay ecclesial ministry, while there he began to discern a vocation to the priesthood. He writes on the Vocations Facebook page: “My experi-ences at Notre Dame allowed me to see the necessity of collaboration in ministry among lay and ordained minis-ters.” Fr. Ryan is 29 years old and is very excited about serving in a parish. I am sure we will welcome him com-pletely. It is indeed an honor to be asked as a parish, to mentor a newly ordained priest and nurture his gifts and talents.

On my 25th Anniversary of Priesthood, I served at Miseri-cordia. We put together a book-let of my favorite readings from “a few authors of life.” This poem was included by William Stafford and I still love it.

The Way It Is There’s a thread you follow. It comes among

things that change. But it doesn’t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread.

You are all the thread that I have attempted to keep hold of, even as I unfold. Your winding together in my life has enabled me to remain grounded and peaceful. There is only one response in my heart to this single thread en-twined with all your love and that is gratitude. Thank you for showing me who to follow, for teaching me how to explain this thread of love, and for helping me not to get too lost. I am deeply touched by the life that has un-folded during these last 40 years, and all the people who have become my thread.

I was very much moved by the outpouring of support and joy that happened on last Sunday. The mass was a shin-ing example of what being Eucharist and Church is all about! The celebration that followed was touching, fun, joyous, and another great sign of Church. Thank you to all the planners and all the partyers! I am very excited about where the Spirit is leading us!
