Our long term experience with the use of cables in tensile fabric structures has given us first-hand experience in the selection and performance of cable systems in practice.

The applications for these cable systems include bridge cables, structural bracing, stays, balustrades and handrails, curtains, shelving, canopies, hangers, platforms, staircases, roof supports, shop fittings, trellising and rigging.

Product quality and standards

Tensile Cables supplies a wide range of locally manufactured and imported cables and fittings. Our range of fittings are designed for use with 1.5mm up to 16mm diameter cable. We spe-cialise in the supply of swaged as well as crimped fittings.

• All of our stainless steel cables are produced in accordance with BSMA29 standards by one of the world’s leading cable manufacturers • We use the highest quality Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel components• Our cable and fittings are quality control tested in South Africa • Stainless Steel has a high corrosion resistance and it’s easy to clean with a low maintenance cost• Our range of fittings are designed to be elegant and aesthetically pleasing and have been designed for optimal strength to ensure safety

Technical information

There are a variety of anchorage systems, which can be used with Tensile Cables swaged fittings, for fixing into masonry, concrete, steel and timber – i.e. expanding anchors, epoxy or cement grouted threaded inserts and threaded items for fixing into timber.

Cable tensioning is achieved by means of threaded end fittings using a nut to tension the cable up against a plate or post, or by using right & left hand threaded components which tension into fixed substrates.

When selecting a cable system, the design force must be determined to ensure safety stan-dards are met. Tensile Cables Engineers are able to assist you in determining this.

To determine the actual design force in a cable system, one has to sum the pre-tensioning force and the subsequent applied forces to get the total design force. Note that forces applied perpendicularly to a tensioned straight cable create very high forces in the cable. Before you select a cable assembly, determine the total design force which the cable must be able to withstand. Then apply a safety factor to ensure that the cable can safely carry the total design force. The required safety factors can be determined using SANS 10160 “Loading” and SABS 0162 “Steel”.

Once this figure has been determined, refer to the breaking strengths in kN for the cable and the fitting being used on each end of the cable. When doing your calculations, determine which of the components in the cable system has the lowest breaking strength in kN and use this in your calculation.

Attaching cables to fittings

The method used to attach fittings to the cable will affect the breaking strength of the system. Below is an indication of different attachment methods.

While Hydraulic Roller Swaging is the preferred method of attaching swaged fittings to cable and achieves the full breaking strength, it is not always convenient for the installation. There-fore appropriate safety factors need to be incorporated into the design when other methods are used.

Swaging

Tensile Cables specialises in the use of Swaged Fittings. The fittings are pressed onto the cable using a Hydraulic Roller Swaging Machine or a Hand Swaging Tool which was specially designed by Tensile Cables.

Hydraulic Roller swagingTensile Cables can provide this service in our workshop for 3mm up to 16 mm cables, if swag-ing can be completed off site.

Swaged fittings are also suitable for swaging with a hand swaging tool when 3mm, 4mm or 5mm fittings are used. We have designed a hand swaging tool that can be easily transported to site, and thus used for on-site swaging of fittings onto cables. Our hand swaging tool is available for sale or hire.

Crimping

The term ‘crimped’ fittings refers to ferrules that are pressed onto the cable when the cable is folded back on itself and pushed through the ferrule. This type of system utilises nickel plated copper ferrules with Stainless Steel thimbles for fixing the ends of flexible cables. We have hand crimping tools for 1.5mm, 3mm, 4mm & 5mm cables. Our hand crimping tool is avail-able for sale or hire.

Maintenance of cable systems

The cable systems on all load bearing structuresshould be inspected and maintained at regular intervals, i.e. Questions to ask yourself:- Are all cables still taut? - Are all lock nuts, threads and pins tight and intact? - Is there any build up of corrosive residues on the cable or fittings?

In highly corrosive environments, cleaning the fittings will extend the lifetime of your cable system. The lifetime of the cable system depends upon the standard of general maintenance, however as a general rule, a qualified inspector should inspect a load bearing structure after 10-15 years. The frequency of the cleaning routine depends on the specific conditions, but as a rule of thumb, all stainless areas should be cleaned at similar intervals as cleaning windows in the environment.
