Payola and Oh claim titles at 50th Avvenire tournament<< The Spaniard was in no mood for concessionsthough, racing to a 6-2 6-3 win to pick up her first 16& Under Tennis Europe Junior Tour title, havingpreviously excelled at both the 12 and 14 & underage groups.

Payola’s victory came in her first appearance onthe Tennis Europe Junior Tour since winning theSanchez-Casal Cup in Barcelona almost two yearsago, and she becomes the fifth Spanish girl to tri-umph at the event. “Winning here is fantastic,” shesaid after the match. “I also won the Under 14 tour-nament in Rome, and I feel great playing in Italy.”

In the boys’ final, top seed Chan-Yeong Oh foughtback from the loss of the first set to overcomereigning Tennis Europe Junior Masters championMate Valkusz of Hungary 3-6 6-3 6-0. The luck ofthe draw saw Oh have to defeat Italian players infour of his five matches, but made up for it by team-ing with home player Enrico Dalla Valle (his singlessemi-final victim) to win the doubles title onSaturday.

Oh etched his name into the record books in somestyle, become the first Asian player ever to win theboys’ championship at Avvenire, as well as the firstplayer in seven years to win both singles and dou-bles. “I am very pleased with this success,” he said,“I won in a beautiful setting and in a beautiful city.”

The week also saw some strong performancesfrom the visiting ITF Touring Teams from Europe

and South America, who were able to test their levelagainst many of the world’s top players in the agegroup. The COSAT Team did particularly well in theboys’ doubles, where Andres Ciurletti & Juan Otegui(ARG) reached the final, falling 0-6 4-6 to Dalla Valleand Oh. Inci Ogut (TUR) and Eliza Omirou (CYP)starred for the Tennis Europe team, beating homepair Martina Pratesi & Lucrezia Stefanini to claim thegirls’ doubles title.

Since the first edition in 1965, the Avvenire event hascome to be regarded as one of the world’s toughest16 & Under tournaments. Former championsinclude Grand Slam champions and world #1sincluding Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Juan Martín delPotro, Conchita Martinez and Martina Hingis.

Girls doubles runners-up Martina Pratesi & Lucrezia Stefanini(ITA) and winners Inci Ogut (TUR) and Eliza Omirou (CYP)

In the Spotlight: Giorgio di PietroWe spoke to the tournament director of Avvenire,Giorgio di Pietro, to find out the keys to the contin-ued success of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’soldest event.

Why do you think that this tournament has lasted solong?

The tournament has been growing since day one,and it became very prestigious; not only for theplayers but also for the members of the club.Without their support it would be impossible tostage the event, because it’s not always possible tobalance the expenses. But everybody recognisesthe importance of the event. Many of our memberscome every day to go around the courts and dis-cover new talents and to see the quality of players, which is of course very high. And this enthusiasmhas been maintained from one generation to thenext.

How did you come to be involved in the tournament?

Well, I have been a member of the club for 40 yearsnow. I have been quite active and am a member ofthe board. Each board member has a role accordingto what they like to do, so apart from this tourna-ment, I am in charge of all the competitions of theclub, and also the teams.

Category 1 tournaments have a lot of requirements. As an organiser, how do you manage these?

Yes, these events are very expensive, particularlythe hospitality. And if you think about all of the othercosts; staff, transport, promotional materials, it alladds up. We can meet some of these costs throughsponsorship and small contributions from the localauthorities, but it is very difficult to balance every-thing. But in my opinion if there is a shortfall, say of25%, then you have to consider that this is made >>

In the Spotlight: Giorgio di Pietro<< up for by the value and recognition that the clubreceives for hosting a prestigious tournament likethis. You can’t really hope to make a profit from a jun-ior tournament, and for this reason not many last aslong as Avvenire has. For example, I know the organ-isers of another junior event in Italy, and six or sevenyears ago they decided to stop and instead offer aprofessional event. They told me that they find it eas-ier to manage the tournament – even when having topay the prize money - because more sponsors areready to work with them. So it is a challenge.

How many people work for the tournament?

Usually we have four or five girls working in the play-ers’ desk, plus a couple of drivers who support thetransportation team, as the players all arrive in bus. It’s great experience for them, because they areyoung and get to use their languages and learn someskills. Then obviously there is me, the referee and thepeople who normally work within the club, whoseattention is focused on the tournament throughoutthis week.

How much preparation goes in to each event?

After the end of the tournament there is some work, collecting the materials, evaluating and giving feed-back to sponsors and so on. But then we take a goodbreak. Everything starts when we get confirmationfrom the federation of the next date, and the factsheet to fill in, which comes towards the end of theyear. We try to maintain contact with our sponsors aswell, but the big efforts usually start around February.

The list of former players of this tournament is veryimpressive. Has the tournament ever tried to headhuntplayers and convince them to play?

Yes, years ago thiswould happen, but notnormally with playersdirectly, more withtheir federations. Noweverything is doneonline by the playerbut we used to have toconvince federationsto send their players. Iremember manyyears ago the USTAdid not want to send asquad and our presi-dent at the time triedto persuade them.Eventually JenniferCapriati came – we

had a very good relationship with her and her family –and she won. We still have a battle sometimes to con-vince players to play. Some federations believe thattheir very best players of this age should be playingthe junior Grand Slams. But the passage to profes-sional tennis is getting harder and harder, so tourna-ments like this one are very valuable for a player.

The club has big plans for expansion in the comingyears. Can you tell us about that?

Yes, a few years ago we won a bidding process to cre-ate a new tennis museum in Italy. So we are workingwith the local authority on the construction of a newbuilding. In fact the Milan public authority is the ownerof the club, and we have a renewable 20-year lease. Ithas been a long road to get this far, with a lot of paperwork, but finally we have the green light and things aremoving, as you can see [construction has alreadybegun, with a large crater currently occupying thespace next to the club, where the foundations arebeing laid]. We plan to be finished in the first monthsof next year, to coincide with Expo in Milan, whichstarts in April. So it should all be ready by the next edi-tion of Avvenire.

The museum sounds particularly exciting. What will itcontain?

Well, the building will have several facilities, includinga state of the art gym. The top floor will be a museumof 900m2. We are very excited about the museum.Obviously it will be filled with historical artifacts andexhibits, but we are taking care to make it as appeal-ing as possible for the young generation, using the lat-est technology to make it an interactive experience.Through touchscreens and video walls, the visitor willchoose what he or she is interested in seeing.

Typically you go to amuseum once, butwe want to ensurethat people come andvisit us time andagain. It’s a very excit-ing project for us, andwe will cover allaspects; the history ofthis tournament, ofthe club, of Italian ten-nis, and tennis in gen-eral. Hopefully we willhave something onTennis Europe too!

Roland Garros 2014

12 Issue 119 > June 2014

The second Grand Slam event of the season was atriumph for European players, who walked away withall but one of the professional and junior titles onoffer.

Sunday’s highly anticipated men’s final saw the toptwo players in the world renew their already leg-endary rivalry. Novak Djokovic was desperate to winthe only Grand Slam title to elude him, while RafaelNadal was equally keen to salvage what had been –at least by his exceptional standards - a disappoint-ing clay court season so far, as well as to makeamends for the crushing disappointment of his lossin the Australian Open final in January.

Early in the match, an upset seemed possible asDjokovic took a nine-game first set and looked readyto capitalise on his momentum. But Rafa eventuallyedged a particularly hard-fought second set andnever looked back, running out a 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-4 winin three and a half hours of play in which both playershad seemed to be affected by the hot conditions.

Nadal’s statistics continue to defy logic; the win is hisfifth consecutive Roland Garros title and ninth over-all. He becomes the first man to win a Grand Slam inten successive years and edges closer to catchingRoger Federer’s record tally of Grand Slam titles, levelling with Pete Sampras at 14. The win is his 45thcareer clay court title, and moves him one behind all-time leader Guillermo Vilas.

The women’s tournament saw a series of earlyshocks, with the top three seeds all having exited bythe middle of the first week for the first time in thehistory of the event, each losing to a promising upand comer making their Slam breakthrough.Arguably the most impressive was GarbiñeMuguruza’s 6-2 6-2 second round demolition ofdefending champion Serena Williams, which the 19-year old Spaniard followed by reaching the quarterfi-nals before giving Maria Sharapova a three-setscare.

Indeed Sharapova was forced to three sets in each ofher last four matches, but never more spectacularlyso than against Simona Halep, who produced someinspired play in what was her first Grand Slam final. After conceding the first set 6-4 and an early break inthe second, Halep enjoyed a golden half hour, even-tually levelling after a tense tie break in which herRussian opponent gifted some uncharacteristicerrors as the finish line loomed.

Sharapova later paid tribute to the Romanian, whowill now rise to #3 in the world, saying that the match

had been the toughest of the nine Grand Slam finalsshe had played. After sinking to her knees to kiss thecourt after match point, she expressed her delightand bewilderment that Roland Garros would turnout to be her most successful Slam at this point inher career, saying “If somebody had told me atsome stage in my career that I'd have more RolandGarros titles than any other Grand Slam, I'd proba-bly go get drunk.”

Doubles

Julien Benneteau & Edouard Roger-Vasselin thrilleda partisan home crowd by beating Marcel Granollers& Marc Lopez to take the men’s doubles title. Havingbeaten the Bryan brothers earlier in the week, theSpanish pair was heavily favoured to win their firstGrand Slam title, having previously won the WorldTour Finals in 2012, but went down in straight sets tothe French pair to the delight of the Philippe Chatriercrowd.

The world’s top pair, Hseih Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, became the only non-European players to takehome the Parisian silverware with a 6-4 6-1 win over2012 champions Sara Errani & Roberta Vinci of Italy. The Taipei/Chinese pair cement their recently-attained #1 status, though the Italians may be ableto reclaim the top spot with a good performance atWimbledon next month.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) and Jean-Julien Roger(NED) fought back from a set down to claim themixed doubles title over Julia Goerges (GER) &Nenad Zimonjic (SRB). The win marked a first GrandSlam title for Rojer, while Groeneveld claimed theWimbledon title in 2009 alongside Mark Knowles.

Rafael Nadal became the first player ever to win the sameGrand Slam title nine times.

Juniors

The junior competitions saw the reigning European 16& Under champions confirm their potential with a per-fect transition to junior Grand Slam tennis. DaryaKasatkina fought back from a set down to oust topseed Ivana Jorovic of Serbia in what she said would beher final match as a junior.

Andrey Rublev has been busy of late, winning his firstITF Pro Circuit title the week prior to Roland Garros, and he continued his good form by reversing a loss toformer Tennis Europe Junior Masters championJaume Munar Clar of Spain earlier this year. Both 17-year olds were appearing in their first Junior Slamfinals, and Rublev achieves the notable feat of becom-ing the first Russian boy to win in Paris since 1966.

The girls doubles showed that the future for Romanianremains bright beyond the immediate success ofSimona Halep as Ioana Ducu and Ioana Rosca edgedpast Catherine Cartan Bellis of the USA last year’sEuropean 14 & Under silver medallist MarketaVondrousova (CZE) in a 20-point champion’s tiebreak.

The boys doubles gave the home crowds somethingto cheer as Benjamin Bonzi and Quentin Halys teamedup to beat Lucas Miedler (AUT) & Akira Santillan(AUS) for the loss of just six games.

It will be interesting to analyse the significance ofresults at this year’s French Open throughout the restof the year. Many talented players, including much-heralded names such as Taylor Townsend, KristinaMladenovic and Ernests Gulbis, enjoyed potentiallycareer changing performances, but as the Tourmakes its annual sudden change to grass, maintainingthat form is an extra challenge. At the top of the tree, and with comparatively few points to defend in the

coming months, Sharapova now looks set to joinHalep in pressuring Serena Williams for the top spotby the end of the year.

On the men’s side, Andy Murray’s return to the Parissemi-finals, and the recruitment of new coach AmelieMauresmo will boost his confidence as he attemptsto defend his Wimbledon title, while few would betagainst a 43rd chapter in the story of Nadal vs.Djokovic being written in the coming weeks.
