WORKING WITH PARENTS

Working with Parents

• In the early stages the most impressionable people in a

young child’s life are their parents

• Recruiting Children means recruiting their Mothers

• Most of the popular sports are recruiting at a very young

age and this may start at 4+

In the Director of Tennis Course Peter Farrell refers to the fact that he often hears Coaches and Club Officials

talking about “Dealing with Parents”

This sounds like a chore rather than something positive

Parents are important stake holders at a club

If Parents are not happy that the club is satisfying the

needs of their child then they are more than likely to

take them out of the club

Working with Parents

Recruit sub committees of interested parents to organize

events for juniors and provide training

How can we assist Parents?

Provide a Template Presentation that can be delivered by the Coaches, the Children’s Officers and the Junior Committee representatives

National Player Database

The National Player Database will become a center piece in the months and years to come in the following areas :

– Communication to all club members in relation to Regional , Provincial and National Tennis News

– Central Information System for National Grading System (ITN)

– Branch Run Competitions (Winter League , Summer Cups etc …)

– Provincial and National Junior Ranking

– In time comercial benefits will also be available from the NPD

The NPD will become the central hub for the running and communication of all tennis related activities and I would encourage your club to get involved so the

above projects can proceed

Director of Development

Do we need full size Tennis Courts for grass roots programmes?

The Development Team and the Coaches Association came up with a plan to promote tennis in Primary Schools by introducing Curriculum based Tennis Lessons into the Games Strand of the Primary School’s PE Curriculum

The following has been put in place

We have appointed a Project Coordinator

The Preparation of an on line School Pack available for

download

The Pack

A series of curriculum based lesson plans covering tennis for

all Primary School classes

Video footage of each drill & game

The Lesson Plans show what objectives of the curriculum are

being developed in each lesson so the teachers will be aware

it's related to the PE Curriculum

Assessment cards and certificates have been prepared which

will allow the student to chart their own progress, and are also

directly associated with the PE curriculum

An introductory letter has been produced for the selected

schools outlining coach qualifications, insurance, child

protection & vetting

The Pack

An article regarding the Schools Tennis Initiative has been included in the very popular Teachers Magazine

IN TOUCH MAGAZINE

The Active School Flag

The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in 2009.

It is a non-competitive initiative which seeks to recognise schools (both primary and post primary) that provide quality PE, co-curricular physical activity and sports programmes for their students.

The Literature we developed is uploaded on the Active School Flag Web Site under the NGB Section.

Schools & Coaches involved

strategy to attract new members to our clubs

“Strategy integrated

Why Court Utilisation Is

Important

• Member per court average is 35 in Ulster

• One Club has 170 Members per court

• Successful Clubs have an average of 150 Members per

court

• Under-utilisation weakens Clubs financially and Club

programmes

‘More people, more fun, more income.’

• 80% members play 1 per week and 20% play 3 times per

week.

Increase Club Membership

200 to 300 Extra 100/£12.5k

• Increasing membership is an ongoing need– Circa 15% member lapse each year (exams/university/

golf/move away)- More members, more fun, more income

– Target and plan increase in membership

– Current 20: Yr1 50; Yr2 100; Yr3 150 (plan 150 members per court)/ Measure progress each month

• Mail shot campaign/posters (see following slides for

leaflets and template plan)

– Free Junior coach programme for Club Members, (cup of coffee for

parents); children joining encourages family membership eg Irvinestown

and Downshire

– March/June-Wimbledon/Sept

– Plan an event on Friday night, BBQ /Pizza & fun tournament also Sat & Sun-

something for all ages and spread to avoid wet day failure

• Tiny Tots Programme- 3 to 5 year olds- Larne

• Interfirms League- St Anne’s, Waterford, Tennis Club

-Contribution £10k per year

• Website – Advertising club and PR Campaign (see following slides

for examples of Club Websites)

• Groupon Deal- Windsor Lawn Tennis Club

– Good practice in outreaching to community and increasing

membership (see appendix 1 for template plan)

Club Websites

Cloughey & District Tennis Club Example Irvinestown LawnTennis Club Example

Increase Club Membership

200 to 300 Extra 100/£12.5k

• Club programme requires ongoing review-

– Club nights/coaching programme/league teams/internal

league/social events- Fundraising

• Provide a welcome/introduction

– Cup of coffee

• Reduce leakage in membership by phoning

“lapsed” members

– Ask what’s wrong/encourage return and payment of subs etc

Conclusion

• Plan provides blueprint for development (5 years)

• Each slide can be used to support/focus on your club needs

• See following slide for Sample Club 1 page strategy

• Don’t be overwhelmed- pick a slide/segment/start

• See previous Checklist of Club Roles/Functions

• Ask for help: George Lucas (arrange a Club Visit)

• Largest issue to overcome is recognising what stage your club is at and how best to proceed

• Don’t be afraid to try some aspect and fail

• Remember success is never measured where you start- “it’s where you finish”

• Contact George Lucas on 07802338938 for further information.

Good luck with your plans!

Groupon Deal- Windsor Example

Please find below details of the Groupon Scheme recently entered into by Windsor Lawn Tennis Club in Belfast as a method of good practice in outreaching to the community and recruiting new members.

Windsor Groupon Deal- 76 new members in 48 hours - £2k Profit

• 72 registering plus 4 late registrations accepted. • Groupon displays a different deal every day comprising of a main deal and 3 other small deals. These are sent to the email of everyone who is a member of the website automatically. • The Groupon website works in those opting into the scheme have to give 50% off the normal ‘product’price to be eligible.• Clubs/Sellers can choose to do a 24hr deal or a 48hr deal. • To undertake the longer deal Clubs/Sellers have to give a greater reduction, so the Windsor Club reduced their fee by 61% (£100 3 month membership for £39). • Buyers sign up to the deal and pay for it immediately online.• Buyers then receive a voucher with a code. This voucher and code is printed off and brought to the Club/Seller to show they have paid for it. • Windsor Tennis Club have advised that the age range for the website is mainly 20-45 yr olds, and out of the first 20 buyers who have validated their voucher to date, only 1 was over 45.• In terms of income, Windsor have indicated that they have received 76 x £39 which is £2,964 and had to pay Groupon £792 (72 x £11) so have made approximately £2k profit .• Furthermore, Windsor have the possibility of making a greater profit if some or most of those registering join after their 3 months membership has expired.
