With the two wins, the Volunteers finished the week with a 3-1 record, including a mid-week triumph on the road at Western Carolina in UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh’s first return to Cullowhee, N.C., since taking over the reins at Rocky Top. After falling behind 8-7 after three innings against the Catamounts, the Big Orange scored 11 unanswered runs to pick up an 18-8 win. Freshman Nick Blount earned his second career victory with 4.2 sparkling innings of relief, allowing just one hit during his time on the mound. The win was especially sweet for Raleigh who served as the head coach at Western Carolina for eight seasons from 2000-07 after playing for the Catamounts from 1988-91. During his stint as the skipper at WCU, Raleigh amassed a record of 257-209, reaching the NCAA Tournament twice, winning two Southern Conference regular-season cham- pionships and claiming a SoCon tournament title. Following their trip to the mountains, the Vols returned home to Knoxville to host a three-game set against 15th-ranked Vanderbilt. After UT dropped the opener, 10-1, on Friday night, the second game of the series was postponed on Saturday due to heavy rain in the area. With two seven-inning games on tap for Sunday, Tennessee cruised through most of the first game, riding the right arm of senior Stephen McCray to a one-run lead in the final inning of regulation. A solo home run tied the game, but sophomore Matt Ramsey and junior Blake Forsythe saved the day in extra innings. Ramsey came on in relief to retire all 11 Commodores that he faced, before Forsythe launched a two-out, two-strike, two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th to give UT a 4-2 victory. Just hours later, the Big Orange entered the seventh in the exact opposite situation, trailing by one with two outs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. A two-strike single by P.J. Polk started a streak in which five consecutive Vols reached base before Vandy’s Drew Hayes hit UT senior Cody Grisham in the shoulder with a 2-2 curveball with the bases loaded to force in the winning run as Tennessee won 4-3. With the three wins on the week, Tennessee improves to 21-20 on the season and 6-12 in Southeastern Conference play, two games out of the eighth and final spot for the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. SCOUTING BELMONT Belmont enters Tuesday’s contest with a 19-23 overall record, including a 7-11 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference action. The Bruins actually opened the season with 10 consecutive victories, but are just 9-23 since then and were swept on the road at Florida Gulf Coast this past weekend. Sophomore outfileder Dylan Craig paces the team’s offensive attack with a .375 batting average, while junior Nate Woods and senior Packy Elkins top the team in the home run category with 16 and 11 longballs, respectively. Woods also has a team-high 61 RBIs. The Bruins will send sophomore right-hander Garrett Fanchier to the mound against the Vols. The Lebanon, Tenn., native is 1-1 with a 10.73 ERA in 13 appearances, including two starts. SERIES HISTORY Tuesday’s game will be the eighth all-time encounter between Tennessee and Belmont. The Volunteers currently lead 4-3 all-time, with all seven previous contests taking place in Knoxville. The Big Orange claimed a 16-4 victory against the Bruins last season after dropping a 5-3 decision in 2008. ALL-TIME MEETINGS April 14, 2009 Tennessee 16, Belmont 4 Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his second season at Tennessee after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons.

While at Tennessee, Raleigh has had seven players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in 2009, highlighted by first-round pick Kentrail Davis. In 18 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 39 MLB draft picks and

56 professional players. That number will undoubtedly continue to grow as 2009 third-round selection Bryan Morgado made the decision to return to Knoxville for a chance to continue to grow under Raleigh’s leadership during his junior campaign.

During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference champion-ships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times.

His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.”

In 18 collegiate seasons, Raleigh has coached 56 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including 13 players who were drafted in the top-10 rounds and seven who have advanced onto Major League rosters.

In those 18 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (67 percent).

Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Cal (12), Emma Grace (10) and Carley (3).

Turn up The VOLume “Tennessee has everything. It’s the state

school, the flagship school. We can recruit this state, and there are enough good players in this state to win a national championship. We’ve got to build this program from the inside out, and that’s what we plan on doing.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“When you make a crazy play like that, say when you are younger, you’re like ‘Man, what if there was a TV camera around? That could end up on SportsCenter.’ Luckily they dug through it and found a video, and I was just sitting there on my couch. It was weird seeing me and then LeBron. It was crazy.”

— UT Outfielder Chris Fritts

“I think we’ve done a good job of building a foundation that we need to build, but obvi-ously, with that comes the end product. The end product for us is winning some games, and I think we’re poised to do that. I think what we had to do was go through the right process and we have gone through those proper channels. I feel excited about this season. We’ve got a tremendous team. We’re more athletic, more physical, we’re deeper, we’re better. You com-bine that with the way we ended last year, the momentum we had, I feel like we’re going to have a great year, I really do.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“The renovations that have been made to the stadium are unbelievable. It’s a place we can call home now. Coming to the park every day, I feel really at home and proud to be a part of this team and this university. This is probably the most talented team I’ve been a part of at Tennessee. Our depth is just tremendous and everywhere on the field is a strong point.”

— Junior Catcher Blake Forsythe

“I’ve been a fan my entire life and I will be even when I leave this university. It’s always going to be home to me. No matter if I’m here playing or watching younger guys several years down the road, I will always want to see UT do well and hopefully we can really turn it around and become one of the premier programs in the country, starting this year.”

— Junior First Baseman Cody Hawn

““Bryan Morgado is one of the best pitchers, certainly in our league, but maybe in the coun-try. He’s a kid that’s throwing 90 left-handed, he’s got three pitches -- the matchup for us was a legit (pitcher), one of the best guys in the league.”

u Raleigh led an offensive juggernaut in 2007 that ranked fifth nationally in runs per game (8.4), sixth nationally in home runs per game (1.4), scoring (8.4) and slugging percentage (.517), seventh in doubles per game (2.39) and 11th in batting average (.323).

u Raleigh’s 2008 UT squad hit 67 home runs in just 56 games, the fifth-highest single-season total in program history.

u The Vols improved upon that number in Raleigh’s second season, blasting out 87 home runs in 55 games, good for the second-best single-season total in UT history.

u Despite fielding a lineup that regularly included six or more underclassmen in 2009, UT improved its RPI by 31 positions from the previous season, moving from 89 to 58.

u Under Raleigh’s guidance, first-year Vol Cody Hawn became just the 10th player in UT history to claim the team Triple Crown with a .364 batting average, 22 home runs and 81 RBIs.

NOTEWORTHYQUICK HITSuThrough April 18, UT sophomore Zach

Osborne ranked as the 22nd hardest player to strike out in the NCAA. He is currently averaging just one punchout every 16.89 at-bats. He has gone down on strikes just nine times all season.uJunior Josh Liles seems to have found

the extra-base button recently, as five of his eight extra-base hits this season came in an eight game stretch from April 3-16. He had at least one hit in each of those eight contests as well.uIn his first 10 starts of 2010, senior Stephen

McCray has already induced 75 groundball outs while giving up 57 flyouts in at team-high 63.0 innings, good for a 1.32 groundout/flyout ratio. In comparison, McCray’s G/F ratio last season was 0.75, as he recorded just 44 groundouts in 52.1 total innings of work.uDespite the fact that it dropped its first

seven conference games, Tennessee was close in each one, as it has been either tied or within one run in either the seventh or eighth inning in all but one contest. Unfortunately, the Big Orange allowed 23 runs in the final three innings of those first seven games, as opposed to just 26 in frames one through six.uIncluding his two seasons at North

Carolina, Tennessee junior and Knoxville native Rob Catapano has started 12 collegiate games. The team he has started for has won all 12 contests, including all five of the games he has started this season for the Big Orange.uScoring the initial run of the game has

been a key to victory for Tennessee this sea-son as it is 12-3 when it cracks the scoreboard first. When they allow their opponent to do so, however, the Vols are just 9-17 with four of those wins coming on walk-off hits in the final inning.uUT scored 40 runs in its season-opening

sweep over Xavier, the most since it tallied 47 in a three-game set against Radford in 2005.uThe 25 runs scored by Tennessee against

Presbyterian College on April 1 marked the eighth-highest single-game run total in school history. The team saw its collective batting average rise 11 points on the night.

WELCOME TO THE VOLUNTEER FAMILY! At 12:43 a.m. on Monday, April 19, Tennessee

Head Coach Todd Raleigh and his wife Stephanie, welcomed Todd Anthony Raleigh, Jr., to the Volunteer baseball family. He will be known as “T” and measured in at 9.1 pounds and 21 inches at birth.

TALE OF TWO HALVESIt has been a tale of two halves this year

for Tennessee. Through the first 28 games of a 56-game schedule, it was all about starting pitching as Bryan Morgado, Steven Gruver, Stephen McCray, Rob Catapano, Steve Crnkovich and Aaron Tullo combined to post a 3.98 ERA. In comparison the ERA for Tennessee starters at the end of the 2009 campaign was 6.29. While they were doing the job on the mound, the Vol offense got off to a bit of a rough start, hitting just .280 as a team.

Since reaching the midpoint of its slate, however, the strong suit for the Big Orange has switched to offense, as it is hitting at a .318 clip and averaging 8.08 runs per game in its last 13 contests, including five games with double-digit run totals. The pitching, meanwhile, has had a rough go of it though, with the squad ERA dropping to 7.43 in those 13 games.

The one constant all season has been the team’s stellar defensive play. Tennessee cur-rently has the third-best fielding percentage in the SEC with a mark of .975. The Vols have just 39 errors in the first 41 games of the sea-son, including 15 errorless contests.

FORSYTHE, DUFFY STARTING TO HEAT UPAlthough juniors Blake Forsythe and Matt

Duffy both got off to a slow start at the plate this season, they have begun to heat up recently.

Forsythe has hit safely in 15 of the team’s last 20 contests after recording a hit in just eight of the first 20 games of the year. During his six-game hitting streak from March 23-31, Forsythe hit at a .409 clip (9-for-22) with two home runs, a double and five RBIs. Over the last four games, Forsythe has begun to find his home run swing, hitting a longball in three of those contests.

Duffy started to turn things around at the beginning of conference play, during which he is leading the team with a .379 batting average. In the first game of a doubleheader against LSU on March 27, Duffy launched his first home run in a Tennessee uniform. HIs second came at Ole Miss on April 3 and he blasted his third at Mississippi State on April 13. He had 16 in his first two collegiate sea-sons, which he played at Vermont.

SETTING THE TABLETennessee has been tremendously success-

ful at finding ways to get on base to start an inning this season. Through 41 games, the Vols have reached base 152 times in 363 leadoff opportunities, which equates to 41.9 percent of the time.

Just a little more than half of those success-ful chances have come via a hit though, as UT leadoff hitters are batting just .271 (81-for-

299) this season. Instead, the Vols have been working their way on base with 52 leadoff walks and 11 hit-batters.

SO MANY CHOICES...When UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh fills

out his lineup card, he certainly has plenty of options at hand defensively. Already this season, UT has had 16 players combine to play a total of 36 different positions. The list is below:

Cody Grisham (4) - 2B/SS/3B/RFMatt Hamaker (4) - C/1B/3B/LFMatt Duffy (3) - 3B/SS/LFBlake Forsythe (3) - C/1B/3BChris Fritts (3) - LF/CF/RFJosh Liles (3) - LF/CF/RFDrew Steckenrider (3) - LF/CF/RFCody Hawn (2) - 1B/3BAdam King (2) - C/1BKhayyan Norfork (2) - 2B/LFPJ Polk (2) - LF/CFZach Osborne (1) - SSCody Stubbs (1) - 1BCharley Thurber (1) - RFMatt Ramsey (1) - RFAndy Yates (1) - LF

SHUFFLING THE DECKThe same theory applies to the batting order,

as Todd Raleigh has used a total of 40 differ-ent ineups through the first 41 games in an attempt to find the combination that will allow the UT offense to run most efficiently. The Vols used their Opening Day batting order on Feb. 26 at Oregon State but have used a different combination in every game since.

PUTTING THE PEDAL TO THE METAL The Vols have been considerably more

aggressive on the basebaths this season than they have been in either of the first two years of the Raleigh regime.

Through 41 games, Tennessee has already stolen 52 bases, led by 20 from junior P.J. Polk and 11 by Josh Liles. By comparison, the team had just 39 in all of 2009 with Liles leading the way with a squad-best eight. Polk and Liles join Andy Simunic (20) in 2008 as the only players in the last three years to reach double-digits in stolen bases.

RAMSEY AND STECKENRIDER SHOWING OFF THEIR VERSATILITY

Tennessee has a pair of two-way players on its roster this season in sophomore Matt Ramsey and freshman Drew Steckenrider. Both players double as power-arms out of the bullpen with fastballs that routinely sit in the mid-90s, as well as power-hitting outfielders.

Steckenrider has seen more action on the mound than at the plate during his rookie campaign, as he has struck out eight batters in six innings of work. His only hit of the season came in his first collegiate at bat, when he lined a home run over the right-field fence at Lindsey Nelson Stadium against Xavier on Feb. 19.

Ramsey, meanwhile, has provided a spark offensively for the Vols since first being inster-ted into the lineup against LSU on March 27.

Since then, he is hitting .389 with 21 hits, 10 of them for extra bases, including four round-trippers. The Knoxville native also doubles as the team’s closer, having picked up two wins and a pair of saves in 16 appearances. He has 27 punchouts in 21.1 innings and an ERA of 3.80.

Against Mississippi State on April 16, Ramsey recorded a rare feat, hitting a home run and notching a save in a 15-13 win over the Bulldogs. He became the first UT player to accomplish the feat since Jeff Lockwood did it against MTSU on March 11, 2008.

POLK GARNERS CONFERENCE, NATIONAL HONORS AFTER STELLAR WEEK

Following a week in which he hit .524 while leading Tennessee to a 4-1 record March 30-April 4, junior P.J. Polk was honored with a pair of accolades, claiming Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball newspaper in addition to his second Southeastern Conference Player of the Week award this season.

Polk finished the week with a team-high 11 hits in 24 at-bats to pace the Volunteers to mid-week triumphs over Tennessee Tech and Presbyterian College and back-to-back victo-ries on the road against No. 11 Ole Miss to lead UT to its first SEC series victory of the season. A 5-9 outfielder, he also paced the squad with nine runs while blasting out four longballs, including the first two home run performance of his career against the Rebels on Saturday.

In all, the Murfreesboro, Tenn., native had four home runs on the week to give him a team-leading six on the year. He had at least one hit in all five games to extend his season-long hitting streak to 10 games, moving him within one of his career-long streak of 11 games. Polk slugged at an incredible 1.095 rate while posting an on-base percentage of .615 as he walked four times and was hit by a pitch once. He also stole two bases in two attempts to increase his team-high total to 14 on the year.

THURBER NAMED “CARE”ACTER STAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sophomore outfielder Charley Thurber has been selected as UT’s CAREacter Star Athlete of the Week. The CAREacter Program is based on a five-point star system that includes the basic traits of a true champion, whether on or off the field. Those traits are attitude, char-acter, grades, community service and perfor-mance.

A 6-4 left-hander from Elmira, N.Y., Thurber has appeared in 20 games, starting 14 in right field. He is hitting .234 with three home runs and 15 RBIs, has stolen a pair of bases and scored nine runs.

This semester, Thurber is participating in the VOLScholar Program for academic and cit-izenship-building and wears the VOLScholar logo on his uniform as the holder of a 3.0 or better grade-point average. The sophomore has a 3.33 GPA as an arts and sciences major.

Every two weeks one student-athlete is selected as the school’s “Star Athlete of the Week” based on the aforementioned five cri-teria. As a reward for their accomplishments, honorees will be recognized each week

by their local media and presented with a T-shirt and a letter acknowledging them as their county’s “Star Athlete of the Week.” Sophomore pitcher Adam Adkins was UT’s first award winner.

MORGADO CLAIMS SEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES

Following a stellar outing against Connecticut on Saturday, March 13, University of Tennessee junior southpaw Bryan Morgado became the first Volunteer in nearly three years to claim Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. The last UT player to earn the accolades was James Adkins in the 12th week of the 2007 campaign.

Morgado twirled an absolute gem in the Orange and White’s 3-2 victory over the Huskies, claiming his second win of the sea-son with seven shutout innings of one-hit ball. The 6-3 lefty set a season high with nine strikeouts, while surrendering just one hit in the first inning. He then proceeded to sit down 19 of the final 21 batters he faced, including 12 straight at one point. He allowed just one runner, the double in the opening frame, to advance past first base during his seven innings on the mound.

With his nine punch-outs, Morgado moved his career total to 208, passing Luke Hudson (202) and Wyatt Allen (203) for sole possession of ninth place on UT’s all-time strikeout list.

HAMMERIN’ HAMAKERSenior Matt Hamaker had a breakout offen-

sive performance against Eastern Kentucky on March 3, notching the first two home run per-formance of his UT career. The 5-11 Clarksville, Tenn., native had just one home run in his first 31 at-bats as a Vol before blasting two in three plate appearances versus the Colonels.

FRITTS’ DIVING CATCH EARNS SPOT AMONG SPORTSCENTER’S TOP 10 PLAYS OF THE DAY

The diving catch made by University of Tennessee freshman outfielder Chris Fritts in the seventh inning of the Vols’ Feb. 28 game against No. 10 Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., was tabbed No. 9 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 “Plays of the Day” on Monday, March 1.

It was also shown on the show “SportsNation” the following day, when it was voted “More Athletic” than an in-your-face dunk by the Phoenix Suns’ Amar’e Stoudemire. It did not, however, win a vote against a LeBron James alley-oop when it was up for the best play of the week award, but it did garner 39 percent of the vote.

With a runner on first and one out just moments after the Beavers scored their first run of the day on Sunday, OSU’s Carter Bell drove an 0-1 pitch from UT starter Stephen McCray to deep left. Although the ball was slicing away from him, Fritts made a leaping grab, somersaulted on the warning track and gunned it back into shortstop Zach Osborne who was able to relay it to Cody Stubbs at first to double up Parker Berberet to end the inning and the Oregon State threat.

GRUVER RECOGNIzED AS CB360 PRIMETIME PITCHER OF THE WEEK

After logging seven shutout innings against 10th-ranked Oregon State on Feb. 27, University of Tennessee sophomore southpaw Steven Gruver was named the CollegeBaseball360.com Primetime Pitcher of the Week, the web site announced March 2.

A native of Canfield, Ohio, Gruver picked up the first win of his collegiate career with a sterling performance against the Beavers on Saturday, getting the Volunteers back on track after a 17-1 loss the previous night. The 6-1 lefty threw seven shutout innings, while striking out a career-high nine and allowing only three hits and one walk.

Gruver allowed just two runners to reach second and none to advance to third during his time on the mound. He threw a total of 97 pitches with 65 going for strikes and sat down 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, including 10 straight at one point.

FORSYTHE NAMED TO JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST

Following a stellar sophomore season and a strong start to the 2010 campaign, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced that UT junior catcher Blake Forsythe was named to the Watch List for the 2010 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza.

Fifty-three catchers were nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division one catcher, the list will be updated to include other candi-dates until May 5, 2010.

POLK CLAIMS INITIAL SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS OF 2010 SEASON

After leading Tennessee to its first season-opening series sweep since 2004 with a trio of three-hit performances, junior outfielder P.J. Polk was named the first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week of the 2010 campaign on Feb. 22. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native was 9-for-12 during the open-ing weekend, good for a stellar .750 batting average.

In addition to his nine hits, Polk also walked three times to allow him to reach base safely in 12 of his 16 plate appearances. The 5-9 speedster posted a tremendous 1.083 slug-ging percentage with four doubles and five singles, while also adding a pair of stolen bases, two RBIs, a sacrifice fly, as assist from his position in left field and a team-high seven runs.

The award was the second of Polk’s career, as he also earned the honors in week nine last season after hitting for a .455 average in the Volunteers’ series win on the road against top-ranked LSU.

MORGADO RETURNS FOR JUNIOR SEASON; BACK IN THE ROTATION

A third-round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2009, UT junior Bryan Morgado is one of just two college players drafted in the first three rounds to return to school, joining Arizona State pitcher Josh Spence.

In 2009, the Miami, Fla., native started five games and made 15 appearances out of the bullpen for the Volunteers. He finished the year with a 4-2 record, a 6.36 ERA and two saves, while striking out a team high 75 bat-ters in 52 1/3 innings.

The 6-3 left-hander has returned to the

Tennessee rotation as its Friday night starter in 2010 after spending most of his sophomore campaign pitching out of the bullpen.

UT SCHEDULE RANKED AS 16TH MOST DIFFICULT BY BOYDSWORLD.COM

With a schedule that features a total of 34 games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year, the University of Tennessee baseball schedule has been rated as the 16th-most difficult among 301 NCAA Division I teams, according to BoydsWorld.com.

The Volunteers’ schedule ranks as the third-hardest in the Southeastern Conference, behind only Georgia (No. 8) and Arkansas (No. 15).

VOLS TO HOLD BOOK DRIVE FOR KNOX COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

In addition to hosting the Arby’s Classic May 13-14, Tennessee Baseball held a book drive on bothdays to help support the Knox County Public Library. In all, the Vols helped to collect over 200 books to support the Knox County Public Library and its goal to strive to meet the educational, informational and cultural needs of the local community.

SUMMER LEAGUE SUCCESS FOR VOLSAfter a strong finish to the 2009 season, a

numbe of Vols were able to carry that momen-tum over into summer league action where they put their talents on full display.

Junior Bryan Morgado spent his summer helping to lead the Bourne Braves to their first-ever league championship in the presti-gious Cape Cod League. In the regular season portion of the team’s schedule, he threw 32.1 innings, amassing a 2-1 record with a 3.06 ERA in eight appearances, including six starts.

While Morgado was setting down hitters in Cape Cod, UT sophomore Steven Gruver was dominating the Northwoods League, earning postseason all-star honors. As the undisputed ace of the La Crosse Loggers pitching staff, Gruver put together a stellar 7-1 record and 2.23 ERA in 14 appearances, while leading his team to the championship series.

FORSYTHE SPENDS SUMMER WITH USA COLLEGIATE NATIONAL TEAM

Following a breakout season in 2009, junior catcher Blake Forsythe completed a stint with the USA Collegiate Baseball National Team this summer, where he hit at a .293 clip with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs. He also walked 21 times in as many games, en route to an impressive .500 on-base percentage. He is the 17th Vol to have either played for or been invited to try out for Team USA.

NEW FACES IN THE CROWDThe Volunteers have welcomed 14 newcom-

ers to Rocky Top this season. Highlighting the group are four freshmen that heard their name called in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. The class includes a total of nine fresh-men, two transfers and three junior college players.

NEW FACES ON THE COACHING STAFFIn addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee

also welcomes a trio of new coaches in pitch-ing coach Jason Beverlin, volunteer assistant Bill Currier and strength and conditioning coach Herman Demmink. Former volunteer assistant Nate Headley also moved into a full-time position as the team’s director of opera-tions during the offseason.

CATAPANO BRINGS CWS EXPERIENCEJunior left-handed pitcher Rob Catapano

brings an element to this year’s team that no other Volunteer can claim: experience playing in the College World Series.

The 6-0 Knoxville native is donning the Orange and White for the first time in 2010 after sitting out a season after transferring from North Carolina. During his time as a Tar

Heel, Catapano amassed a 5-1 record and 3.42 ERA in 46 appearances, including seven starts.

North Carolina advanced to the College World Series in both of his seasons in Chapel Hill. Catapano twirled 1 1/3 innings of score-less relief against Rice, as well as a a third of an inning versus Oregon State in the squad’s first go-around and another perfect inning against Fresno State the following year.

HOMEGROWN TALENT PLENTIFUL ON TENNESSEE ROSTER

Tennessee’s roster includes 16 players from the state of Tennessee (44 percent of the ros-ter). Four Vols are from Knox County and one is from Hamilton County (Chattanooga), while five other hail from West Tennessee and six are from Middle Tennessee.

VERMONT’S LOSS IS TENNESSEE’S GAINWhen the University of Vermont made the

decision to disband its baseball program last year, Catamount coaches and players were not sure what their futures held. For two, shortstop Matt Duffy and head coach Bill Currier, their paths would lead to Tennessee.

The 2009 America East Conference Player of the Year, Duffy found out he would be playing in Knoxville in April. It wasn’t until the next January though, that he discovered that he would be joined by his former head coach, as Bill Currier assumed the reigns as UT’s volun-teer assistant coach.

Duffy, who has moved to third with the Vols, hit .388 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs en route to second-team All-American honors. Currier coached at Vermont for 22 years, put-ting together a record of 486-470.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHINGAccording to freshman outfielder Chris

Fritts, the sacrifice bunt he laid down in the third inning of UT’s 17-1 win over Xavier on Sun., Feb. 21, was the first of his life, including high school and summer league ball.

“I didn’t even really think about it until I got back to the dugout and all of the guys were giving me high-fives,” Fritts said. “Bunting was not one of my strong points when I got here, but I’ve done a lot of extra work before practices to get better at it, so it felt good to get that first one down.”

SECOND PHASE OF RENOVATIONS UNDER-WAY AT LINDSEY NELSON STADIUM

The second of four phases of renovations is nearing completion at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Crews have already finished add-ing a new club area and MVP seating behind home plate that will allow fans to sit closer to the field. Permanent chair-back seating has also been added throughout the entire main grandstand, while the stadium’s exterior has been faced with brick. In addition, the visitor’s locker room behind the third-base dugout has been renovated and a a new batting cage facility, approximately 60 yards in length, will be added down the right-field line.

The first phase, complete prior to the 2009 season, included more than $4 million worth of improvements, primarily to player devel-opment areas. Work was finished on a team clubhouse that features a state-of-the art lock-er room, training room and coaches’ office complex. Phase I also included the addition of nearly 1,000 seats down the right-field line, as well as a party plaza, and saw the field surface replaced.

Phase three will include the construction of a new press box and luxury suites, while the fourth and final phase will add permanent stands down the left-field line.

BASEBALL HOSTS 18TH ANNUAL LEAD-OFF BANQUET; ANNOUNCES ALL-DECADE TEAMS

Former University of Tennessee standouts James Adkins and Mike Lincoln joined fellow former Vols and current professional play-ers J.P. Arencibia, Chase Headley and Luke Hochevar as part of the speaker panel fea-tured at the 18th Annual Tennessee Baseball Leadoff Banquet on Feb. 5 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

The team also announced the 2000-09 All-Decade first and second teams at the ban-quet. The two teams include a total of 30 play-ers, including 19 that played in the College World Series and 12 that claimed All-American honors during their time at Rocky Top.

SEC COACHES PICK VOLS TO FINISH SIXTH IN PRESEASON POLL

received five of a possible 11 votes. Florida received four votes while Arkansas had three. In addition to picking a preseason SEC cham-pion, the league’s head coaches voted a pre-dicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions.

In the Eastern Division, Florida was the favorite with 64 of a possible 66 points. South Carolina came in second with 52 points and Georgia third with 42. Tennessee finished with a total of 19 points in the poll. LSU was named the favorite in the Western Division with a total of 63 points. Arkansas was second with 59, while Ole Miss, who shared the overall title last season with LSU, finished third with 39.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Coaches were not allowed to vote

for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

VOLUNTEERS ON THE TUBEThe Volunteer baseball team will be fea-

tured in a total of 13 televised games in 2010. In addition, 46 of the squad’s 56 regular-season games are scheduled for broadcast locally on WNML “The Sports Animal” (AM 990, FM 99.1 and 99.3), with veteran play-by-play man John Wilkerson on the call. ESPN360.com will stream each television broadcast live online except for UT’s ESPNU contest against Kentucky on April 30 and its games on SportSouth at Ole Miss on April 4 and against Kentucky on May 1 and 2 in Knoxville.

The 13 televised contests are part of the

SEC’s 2010 baseball television schedule, the first under a new 15-year contract with ESPN. The regular-season package will include 87 broadcasts in 2010, up from eight games in 2009. In addition, all games from the 2010 SEC Tournament will continue to be broadcast, with the championship game airing nationally on ESPN2.

BASEBALL PARTICIPATES IN LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK, RAISES MORE THAN $9,500 FOR CANCER RESEARCH

For the third consecutive year, the University of Tennessee baseball team participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk at Circle Park on the UT campus this past November. The Volunteers exceed-ed their fundraising goal, raising $9,509 to increase their three-year total to more than $22,000 in support of research into the treat-ment and prevention of cancer.
