Junior Activities Receive Approval, Financial Support Board decisions encourage youth development, involvementMinutes from the June 27, 2015 Board of Directors meeting in Lawrenceburg
The TSSA Board of Directors met Saturday, June 27, 2015 in Lawrenceburg during the Tennessee Simmental Field Day. Vice-president Jason Doggett presided in the absence of President Chris Ivie who was unable to attend. Other directors present included Cathy Ivey, Donald Jackson, Sarah Jones, Chris Martin, Steve Slate and Stan Tinin. In addition to Ivie, director Mike Connatser was also not present. Chairman Doggett called the meeting to order, and after the roll was called, asked for discussion regarding the minutes from the last meeting. Slate moved, seconded by Jackson, to accept the min-utes as recorded and previously emailed to Board members for approval. The motion passed. Doggett called for the financial report, and Sec-retary/Treasurer Martin reported a total balance of $12,094.43 in the general account with $850 earmarked for the junior voucher program, leaving an available balance of $11,244.43. Jackson moved to accept the financial report as presented. Jones seconded the motion, and the motion passed. Doggett asked for an update regarding the display booth, and directors were shown a display similar to the one the Board has voted to purchase. Jackson suggested the target date to unveil the booth be postponed until the Fall Showcase Sale in
Lebanon, and the Board agreed. Cathy Ivey and Donald Jackson were called upon to give the junior advisory report. Jackson updated the Board on progress with the bid to host the 2016 AJSA Eastern Regional, saying the bid had been submitted to ASA for Tennessee to host the event in Cookeville June 15-18, 2016. He also mentioned he hoped to hear a decision by the National Classic in Texas in July. Ivey and Jackson then reported that eight juniors had recently exhibited thirteen heifers at the AJSA South Central Regional in Springfield, MO. Junior advisors also discussed the 2015 Tennessee Simmental Futurity to be held dur-ing the Williamson County Fair in Franklin August 8, reporting 58 animals had been nominated for the 2015 event. Ivey announced that a few Tennessee juniors would be attending the AJSA Summit Leadership Conference in Bozeman August 3-8, adding that her daughter, Emily, had received one of two Peter Courtney Scholarship awards through ASA to help defray expenses. Martin confirmed that both Madison Martin and Kendall Martin were also registered for the Summit Conference and that he would be attending in an adult leadership role. Ivey asked the Board to consider financially supporting
those who attended, and after a brief discussion, Slate made the motion seconded by Jackson, to award $250 to each adult or junior from Tennessee who attended the conference. The motion passed with both Ivey and Martin abstaining. Jackson punctuated the junior advisory report, saying that 49 junior vouchers had been awarded during the Agribition Junior Show in March. Slate then presented a membership update, reporting 82 current members, up from just 36 for all of 2014. Fall Showcase sale manager Jeremie Ruble addressed the Board during the sale report, asking for support in securing cattle and recruiting new consignors for the 2015 fall sale. Ruble was optimistic about a strong market and a good sale. Two applications were presented for the 2015 Ronnie Osteen Memorial Academic Scholarship. Donald Jackson excused himself from discussion regarding applications submitted by Kayla Jackson and Tygr Taylor. Slate moved, seconded by Martin, that both applicants receive a full $500 scholar-ship toward 2015-2016 college tuition. Jackson abstained as the motion passed. With no further business and no further announcements, Jackson moved, seconded by Slate, to adjourn the meeting.
