A seasonal welcome message from Kevin Barnes, ManagingDirector TBCM

Hello and welcome back to our second issue of theTendring Business Community Magazine.

I would like to thank all the advertisers, sponsors, andparticipants who, without their tremendous support andencouragement, have made the second issue possible!

As said in the first issue, it is amazing to find so manysuccessful companies in the Tendring area that go abouttheir business without the recognition they deserve.

Companies such as C Truk , based in Brightlingsea, whoinvited us to the launch of their latest commission, The SCBuzzard, which is a purpose built vessel working with theoff shore wind energy companies.

We had a fantastic afternoon on board and were there forthe dedicated naming ceremony. C Truk are just one of thesuccess stories Tendring has to offer.

We had our first networking event at the Kingscliff Hotel inOctober and had over 25 attendees.

As it was our first event we tried some different variationson a networking event.

After feedback from all attendees, the general consensus isto have a very informal and relaxed event.

There was an open and frank discussion on what theyliked/disliked about the magazine.

We listened and have made some significant changes tothe look and feel of the magazine.

As we are always striving to improve the content of thepublication, please feel free to e mail any suggestions you

think might be relevant. Good or bad, we are always readyto take on board any comments made. After all, it is for youthe Tendring Business Community that we are servicing.

Our second networking event will be on the 25th ofJanuary 2013, at the Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing clubaboard the LBK 6 “Clubhouse”.

This is a World War 2 vessel that has been converted into asuper clubhouse. Please visit www.hdsc.org.uk to view thishistoric vessel. It is the only one in existence and promisesto be a truly unique experience. (please see outer backcover for more information,

We promised we would move the event around Tendring, and this we will be continuing to do on a regular basis.

As it is the season of goodwill I would like, on behalf of myteam, wish you all a truly Happy Christmas and a very, very, prosperous New Year.

Thank you all for your continued support and I lookforward to seeing you in Harwich for breakfast at our next, informal networking event.

The next issue (Issue 3) will be out in early March 2013.

For more information please feel free to contact me at any time.

From an early age I have shown hippytendencies. Around the age of six or seven Iliked crystals, wind chimes, and then a little

later, incense. When I was in my teens I startedexploring meditation and books on Easternspirituality and New Age thinking.

What does any of this have to do with business, you mayask? Well, during that time I have come to understand whatmakes a good guru, and perhaps more to the point, whatmakes a bad one. And I believe that what makes a usefulspiritual mentor is similar to that which makes a useful onein business too.

We live in the age of the personal development guru andthe business coach. There is an over-abundance oftechniques, step-by-step guides, workshops, courses – manyof which come with a pretty hefty price tag. But how can wetell when a guru really has our well-being in mind, orwhether they’re just out to make a quick buck? The answerlies in one simple question: Are they helping me be myself?

Some coaches are open about the fact that all they aregiving is knowledge. That’s great. But many claim to be able

to transform our lives, and thatrequires a whole lot morethan knowledge alone.

To genuinely improve our lives, a ‘guru’ must be able tocoach us in how to become more centred in who we are.The Indian mystic and spiritual teacher, Osho, put it thisway: “The guru is one who pulls you towards himself just

to throw you back into your own being.”

Why is it so important for a mentor to bring us back toourselves? Because the most exciting business people arethose whose true essence shines through in everythingthey do. When they care, we care.So when we find ourselves in the over-populated world ofcoaches and mentors, we can use this simple question toguide us to the right guide: Are they teaching us how to be

more like them, or more like us?

It’s been called the business of the 21st century.Network marketing, also known as teammarketing, multi level marketing or direct

selling, has shaken off the stigma of pyramidselling and come of age.

In the UK over 400,000 people are involved and it is the largestprovider of part time income opportunities in the country. TheUK market is worth £2 billion annually, and worldwide, networkmarketing businesses are worth more than a hundred billiondollars. Traditionally thought of as a job mainly for women, lastyear saw a massive increase in men entering the direct sellingmarket and an equally large increase in the over 50’s.

The Direct Selling Association, the governing body fornetwork marketing organisations, lists over 40 differentregistered and approved companies ranging from cosmeticsto telecommunications. With jobs in employment becominga scarce commodity more and more people are turning tobecoming self employed. By buying into an existingcompany, as a kind of mini franchise, some of the headachesof running your own business are taken care of. Start upcosts are low, you have a ready made product range, yourmarketing and sales plans are in place, and if you choose theright company you will have access to plenty of training.People join network marketing for many different reasons.

Part time as an additional income, or to fit around family orother commitments, to add value to an existing business, oras a full time career move, the business is flexible enough tosuit individual life styles and needs. The key is to findsomething that you are passionate about.

A few suggestions when choosing a company to work with.Make sure they are reputable with a history of growth andstability. If they belong to the DSA then you know that theyconform to their strict code of ethics. Find a company withexcellent products or services that you would be happy touse and recommend. Consumable products or services areuseful as you then get repeat custom without having to findnew customers all the time. Check out the level of trainingand support that will be available to you. Most importantly, make sure that it is something that you will enjoy doing andhas the potential to achieve the results you desire.

If you would like to find out more about network

marketing, call me for a confidential chat or come along to

one of our free seminars.

Dutch-owned Sima Charters has takendelivery of the latest vessel to join its fleet,a CTruk 20T multi-purpose catamaran.

Sporting Sima Charters’ eye-catching yellow andblue livery, SC Buzzard is the tenth vessel to becompleted at the Brightlingsea yard in two years.

The relationship between Sima Charters and CTruk had aninteresting start, with one being in part responsible for theexistence of the other. CTruk chairman Andy White recallsbeing out with friends on a sailing smack near GunfleetSands wind farm in 2009 when a Sima Charters vesselpassed them, knocking the wind from their sails. Intriguedas to why there were no locally-built and operated vesselsat work in this burgeoning industry, Andy and Ben Simpson,MD, later founded CTruk Boats on the site of the old Aldousshipyard in Brightlingsea, bringing the town’s shipbuildingheritage back to life.

It is testament to CTruk’s continued effort to improve onthe current market offering that Sima Charters latercontacted the company in 2011 and ordered one of their20 tonne payload multi-purpose catamarans to join itsgrowing fleet.

Anecdotes aside, Ruud Lievaart, owner of Sima Chartersand seasoned vessel operator, recalls his early interest inCTruk, “I was impressed with their drive to innovate in thissector. The weight-saving on CTruk’s composite cats makesit possible for us to offer robust workboats that areextremely fuel efficient. In today’s offshore wind supportmarket that is a contract-winning factor.”

With fuel costs spiralling and increasingly stringentenvironmental regulations affecting marine communities, the need to conserve vessel energy is a key considerationfor ship and boat operators. Andy White explained how thecompany’s offering ticks this important box, “CTruk’s resininfusion composite construction process saves up to 40%

on weight and enhances hydrodynamic shape, resulting inthese vessels burning around 50% less fuel than anequivalent aluminium crew boat.”

SC Buzzard was officially named at an informal gathering inBrightlingsea on Friday 2 November. She features thepatent-applied flexible pod system developed by CTruk toenhance versatility as well as a large volume fuel transfersystem. The 18.5m catamaran is likely to start her workinglife in UK waters, possibly moving on to Belgian or Germanoffshore projects next year.

Dura Composites, founded in 1996, has evolved over

the past few years into a truly international player,

supplying world class products from its’ HQ in

Clacton-on-Sea.

We met Stuart Burns, Managing Director of Dura

Composites to find out more.

The first thing that strikes you as you walk into the Sales

Office is the vibrancy of the staff and the obvious

enthusiasm that Stuart and his management team have for

the company.

It is clear from the start that Stuart is very passionate and

proud of Dura and its’ on-going success and growth.

The company currently employs 36 people and has plans

for expansion in both the UK and export markets.

Since it was founded, Dura Composites has been

manufacturing fibreglass anti-slip structural flooring that

is strong yet lightweight, fire resistant and needs only

minimal maintenance throughout its life span – it also has

the added benefit of being corrosion resistant unlike

metal alternatives.

More recently the business has expanded into timber

composites, which is a fusion of recycled wood and plastic.

The product is eco- friendly, with a traditional wood

appearance, and virtually maintenance free. These decking

and cladding products require no staining or painting and

come with a warranty of up to 12 years in commercial

installations and up to 25 years in domestic installs. This

range has boomed in popularity, offering an attractive

alternative to natural wood products on the market.

Dura Composites supplies its flooring and façade products

to four sectors- Industrial, Marine, Landscaping and

Architectural.

Customers can range from major contractors, architects

and specifiers to local landscapers and gardeners. In fact,

what many people don’t know is that Dura Composites are

very happy to supply to the general public as well.

LANDSCAPING

Dura Composites offers a range of timber

composite decking, hand-railing and

pergolas. Its Dura Tile product is ideally

suited to DIYers. It is made of composite

timber and has its own plastic base that is

flexible and therefore ideal where the

surface is a little uneven. There is no need

for a sub frame and it can be laid directly

onto a balcony, roof terraces or patios over

old slabs. Landscapers and developers also

love to use it for roof terraces and balconies.

ARCHITECTURAL

The company also supply a revolutionary cladding

product. The eco-friendly Dura Cladding was an ideal

material to use for the Lanswood Business Park project.

The product doesn't suffer from colour fade like natural

wood so it is ideal for phased projects such as this.

Dura Composites has been giving back to the local

community. The company recently donated a timber

composite deck to a good local cause. St Clare's Nursery in

Clacton now has the benefit of an all-weather outdoor

play area that was previously muddy and could only be

used for a few months of the year.

Dura Composites is now the first timber composite

company in the world to gain FSC 100% approval. All the

wood that is used for their decking and cladding products

now comes from sustainable forestry.

The company has distributors within the UK and globally.

Its distributor in the Middle East supplies products to

United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain.

Distributors are also in place in Perth, Australia and Italy

and the company has plans for this growth to continue.

INDUSTRIAL

Dura Composites offers a range of alternatives to

traditional building materials such as concrete, wood and

steel. For example, its’ Dura Slab product provides a perfect

replacement for concrete access covers over trenches or

gullies because it is strong enough for vehicles or people to

traverse across it but light enough to be lifted by hand.

Dura Slab is around three times lighter than its concrete

equivalent and has an anti-slip surface. Upon heavy loading

it is designed to reform to its natural state, whereas

concrete is prone to cracking over time and steel products

will permanently bend. It is also an ideal product to be used

in places like National Grid electricity sub stations because

it doesn't conduct electricity and does not corrode.

Dura’s Managing Director, Stuart Burns meets Prime MinisterDavid Cameron at The Big 5 Exhibition in Dubai

MARINE

Dura Composites is a market leading brand in the Marine

market. It offers a range of anti-slip deck products and

accessories ideal for installation on pontoons, jetties and

gangways in commercial or leisure marine environments.

Aconsortium of local employers and otherpartners brought together by A J WoodsEngineering and Colchester Institute have

heard the Department for Business, Innovation andSkills has approved its pilot bid “Energising Harwich– a Passport to Work” across the Haven Gateway lowcarbon supply chain. The announcement was madeon Tuesday 11 September by Business SecretaryVince Cable at the launch of the Government’sIndustrial Strategy at Imperial College, London.

The bid was submitted in response to the UK Commissionfor Employment and Skills announcement that up to £250million of Employer Ownership of Skills Fund would beavailable over the next two years and that it was lookingfor innovative propositions from employers. The EmployerOwnership pilot routes public investment directly toemployers – enabling them to invest in the training andskills development they need to grow their business. A J Woods invited Colchester Institute, with its strongreputation of delivering high quality education, trainingand apprenticeships in collaboration with employers, tohelp form the consortium.

The consortium of local employers led by A J WoodsEngineering is looking at the opportunity to expandbusiness and create more local jobs in an area that hassuffered from high unemployment in recent years. Theconsortium of employers and supporters include thefollowing: A J Woods Engineering Limited, ColchesterInstitute, CCL UK Ltd, F T Marine Ltd, EPC group, PontoonHire Ltd, Precision Navigation, Dalby Offshore RenewablesLtd, Sailspar Ltd, Dunninghams Ltd, Harwich MayflowerProject, Foxes Marina Ltd, Harwich and Dovercourt HighSchool, Job Centre Plus, Tendring District Council, EssexCounty Council, SEMTA and Haven Gateway PartnershipThe project itself will focus on Harwich’s role as the UK’sbiggest wind port. It has become the installation base forthe Gunfleet Sands and Greater Gabbard offshore windfarms. Negotiations are currently underway for Round 3offshore wind farms which will be the biggest developmentyet in the world. The challenge is to ensure that localpeople have the necessary skills and qualifications for

employment by the majorcontractors working on theplanned construction of the EastAnglia One Wind Farm, scheduled to commence in 2015.

Tony Woods Managing Director of AJ Woods EngineeringLtd said “I am pleased that the Government is listening toIndustry, as it is the employers that really understand whatis needed and can add true value to funding for training. AsI am Harwich born and bred, it means a lot to me that mycompany is able to help the people of the area by givingthem the opportunity to take part in meaningful training tohelp them gain jobs in industry. We have already madesubstantial investment in training and have just opened astate of the art Training Tower together with a ConfinedSpaces training facility in Harwich”.

Danny Clough, Principal and Chief Executive for ColchesterInstitute said, “With 269 bids for this pilot funding, we arevery pleased that the Energising Harwich funding bid caughtthe imagination of UKCES who were demanding innovativeideas to build workforce capability. We are hopeful that thisinitiative proves to be successful, and alongside delivery ofthe Energy Skills Centre at Harwich later this year, will be thecatalyst for other local initiatives to stimulate economicregeneration in Harwich and across Tendring.”

As a result of the bid it is hoped that several hundred of thelocal workforce will gain the opportunity of specialist trainingto enable them to gain employment especially in the OffshoreWind Energy Sector and energise local businesses to preparethem to win forthcoming contracts in the energy industry.
