Snow and sub-freezing temperatures were quickly left behind

when our plane took-off from the Dayton International Airport in

the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, January 13. We

were on our way to Dominica for a week’s visit. Members of the

2nd Twinning Team are: Jeanie Bates, Ron Curtis, Bob Hartings, Russ Kill, Judy Lohnes, and Jerry

Voisinet. The 1st Twinning Team visited the tropical island in January, 2014.

Our host for the week was St. John/St. Lewis Parish, located in Portsmouth. We were housed at the

homes of several parishioners. This arrangement provided us with the unique advantage of better

understanding Dominica’s culture and heritage. All of us were extremely impressed with the

thoughtfulness and generosity of our host families.

During our week there, parish guides took us to the Social Centre Pre-School, St John’s Primary School,

St John’s Academy, the CALL Center, the Home of the Aged, and the Meals Outreach Program directed

by Sister Jaya. In addition, our team was able to visit and share meals with the congregations in Capuchin

and Toucarie.

We visited several classrooms and were impressed with their effective teaching style, the behavior of the

students, and their diligence in their studies. Some of the Form 5 St John’s Academy students were taking

12 subjects, which is a considerable amount of work. Their ability to learn multiple languages was also

very impressive.

On Friday evening, we were guests at a Culture Night hosted in the St. John’s Primary School yard under

a beautiful night sky. Events for the evening included a local band, native dances, poetry readings of

poems written for the occasion, calypso singing and presentations by the church choir. It was a beautiful

evening. A parish-wide picnic was held in our honor on Sunday after the morning Mass in Portsmouth.

We toured the island on Monday, visiting Scott’s Head, which overlooks Soufriere Bay, where the

Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea join. Also on Monday, we were able to meet with Bishop Gabriel

Malzaire and visit with Sister Mary Gallagher, a native

of Sidney, Ohio.

All of us were impressed with the Masses we attended. Both the

Opening Mass for the Roman Catholic Schools and the 8:00 am

Sunday Mass were very special. We were impressed with Father

Sharplis’ constant ability to use every moment as a teaching moment

for both the little ones and the adult parishioners. All were also

impressed with the lovely voices and the music during the Masses.

Especially touched was Music Director Judy Lohnes, who was given

copies of all of the songs that were used during the services.

Returning home, we realized that the world is truly a very small

place - and we are all alike in our wants and needs. God is our

Father, and we are truly Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

All of us loved Dominica —enjoying the beautiful sun, sand, and

hospitality — and wanted our stay to last longer! SP

Adult Faith Formation Commission:

Past activities:

Christ Renews His Parish: The men’s retreat, rescheduled from November 2015, was held

February 20-21 at the DSC with ten men in attendance. Women and Men of Team Three are

now in formation for the next CRHP retreats in the fall.

Lent: Members of the Adult Faith Formation assisted in leading Stations of the Cross at both parishes. As a

Lenten Mission, Fr. Herman Sharplis from our twinning parishes St. John/St. Lewis in Dominica spoke on

the Jubilee of Mercy. Discussion groups using Matthew Kelly’s Rediscover Jesus book were held at

different locations hosted and led by parishioners from both parishes.

Coffee and Doughnuts: Hosted by various parish organizations are held the first Sunday of the month

September through May. They will resume in the fall.

Prayer Partners: Coordinated by AFF, parishioners partnered with forty-one Confirmation students and

RCIA candidates/catechumens praying for them during their formation period.

Future activities:

St. Joseph Table: In honor of St. Joseph the Worker (May 1), parishioners are asked to donate

nonperishable food items for the Bethany Center food pantry at all Masses April 30th and May

1st.

Pentecost (May 15): Parishioners can remember their Confirmation by wearing a nametag with their

Confirmation name on it. Red balloons will again decorate the churches.

The Adult Faith Formation Commission is comprised of members from both St. Boniface and St. Mary

parishes, Diane Mengos, and Fr. Bolte. Anyone interested in being a part of this commission is welcome.

Questions? Please contact Barb Kohl (773-9205 or [email protected]).

St. B./St. M. Mission Committee:

Some of our members and several other members of our parishes traveled to Dominica in January. They all

had a good time learning about Dominica's culture. Upon returning, they spoke about their trip at Masses

and several meetings.

We sold desserts at the Lenten Fish Fries and want to thank

everyone for supporting us in this fundraiser. The desserts are

out of this world, and we appreciate the hard work everyone

puts into making them.

Now for the big thing that we do. Spring began on March

20th. And, when it's spring, it's time for the Mission Commit-

tee to start gathering items for our annual RUMMAGE

SALE. We have received some already and want to fill the garage up again. Jerry Voisinet has been kind

enough to donate a storage area for us as well. The money from the Rummage Sale helps us send visitors

to Dominica and, also, bring visitors here for Twinning. It helps us support our two missions,

the Gutmanns, Chile, and Sister Sarah, Guatemala. The rummage sale is going to be July 9 and

10. Please make this a big success like you have in the past. We thank everyone for their support of this

fundraiser. Call Don, 773-2400, to arrange pick-up. So, spring clean to your heart's content and help us

again this year.

June 3rd, 4th, and 5th - we will have the Inspiration Booth at the St. Mary Festival. Please support this

booth as you have in the past. It's located inside the ramp door of the school. Thank you.

St. Mary Altar Society:

The ladies had a membership drive in January and currently have eighty-five members!

They sold desserts at the February 19th Fish Fry. And they will be in charge of the Cake

Booth at the Summer Festival, so are currently making plans for that. Be sure to stop in at

the Cake Booth and take a chance on winning some of their fine baked goods.

Respect Life Committee:

On Sunday, February 28th, Fr. Denis Wilde, Associate Director, Priests for Life, celebrated Masses at St.

Mary and St. Boniface Churches. On, Monday, February 29th, he spoke at the Healing Service for those who

have experienced the loss of a child. While in our area, Fr. Denis also celebrated Mass with the 5th to 8th

grade students at Piqua Catholic. He visited Lehman High School and Elizabeth's New Life Center in

Sidney. He shared a strong prolife message with everyone he met. He encouraged us to use proper terminol-

ogy when talking about abortion. Abortion is not about a woman's right to choose, it is a mother choosing to

kill her child. Once a woman is pregnant, she is a mother and the man is a father. He also talked about the

"Ps" of being prolife:

* Our need to PRAY for an end to abortion and renewed respect for human life

* To be PRESENT to all pregnant women

* To be aware of prolife positions of our POLITICAL candidates

* To PERSIST in our prolife beliefs

Lenten Fish Fries:

St. Mary Fish Fries have completed their very successful Lenten dinners again this year thanks to

chairpersons, Mitch & Angie Hohlbein, Andy & Julie Monnin, the Karn families, and countless other

volunteers who help throughout the Lenten Fish Fry season. The event could not happen without the tireless

efforts of many, many individuals. A special thanks to the groups

sponsoring the dessert tables each week. Those monies are kept by the

organization sponsoring the desserts to help support their activities.

Family Life Commission (FLC) has used the funds to support the parish

and school throughout the years. Without the fish fries, we could not do it!

Regular FLC activities are the monthly coffee and donuts, Easter Treats,

St. Nick Treats, Thanksgiving baskets, Senior Breakfast and supplies for

Funeral Luncheons.

FLC has also supported parish needs by

purchasing floor mats for the kitchen, mulch

and church landscaping, cafeteria tables and

chairs, luncheon for Dominican visitors, carpet

and paint for the convent, vacuum sweepers for

the church, and a new freezer for the cafeteria.

The Fish Fries began in the 1980s under the

leadership of Jenny Fink, fourth grade teacher at Piqua Catholic. She recruited a

committee of volunteers who began the first fish fry that has now been going on

for over 35 years. Some of those same individuals are still involved with the Fish

Fries today.

St. Mary Festival:

St. Mary Parish Festival is celebrating its 46th year of fun and festivities for the parish and community the

weekend of June 3-5. The annual festival will be held Friday, 6-11 p.m.; Saturday, 3-11 p.m.; and Sunday,

1:30-7:30 p.m. It will feature rides, live entertainment, food, cake booth, kiddieland, pony rides, games of

chance, corn hole tournament, grand raffle and more!

The yearly festival began in 1970 and was held on the grounds of the former Knights of Columbus Hall on

25A. The first festival featured games of chance and food according to one of the past festival chairper-

sons, Jan Hissong. From there it was moved to the parish grounds at 528 Broadway in the early 1970s.

Tom Staley and Jim Apple then spearheaded the construction of brightly-colored festival booths and Leroy

Steinke helped to make canvas coverings for each of the booths. Jim Apple recalled that Charlie Drapp

flew his plane above the festival grounds and took pictures so the group could remember where each booth

would be placed the following year.

Once the old Piqua Catholic High School was torn down, the festival was

expanded to include carnival rides and an entertainment stage along with

more games, food and activities for the entire family.

“The Knights of Columbus used to pull in their famous bus and prepare fried

chicken at those first festivals,” said Jim Apple. In recent years, Mitch

Hohlbein and a group of volunteers fry chicken over pit barbecues. “The

chicken dinners are still a really great part of the festival!” he added.

Current festival chairs, Brad Ulbrich, Trent Karn and Lance Karn, along

with hundreds of volunteers are preparing for this festival anniversary

celebration. “Lots of work goes into the planning and actual festival itself,”

continued Jan Hissong. “It’s a wonderful week-end for both parish members

and the community who have been huge supporters over the years,” he said.

Father Tom Bolte, pastor of St. Boniface and St. Mary Parishes, continued the thank yous for all involved

in the festival. “We couldn’t do this without the many, many volunteers along with the city, neighbors, and

those businesses and individuals who support the festival each year. Each one truly adds to the success of

the week-end.”

Piqua Catholic School: Where has the year gone? We completed over

half of the school year already. It is so hard to believe how quickly this

year is moving. Many events have filled our year. We welcomed three

new teachers to our school family. Mrs. Rene Hoelscher is our third grade

teacher. Mrs. Leah Prenger is our 4th grade teacher. Ms. Rachel Owen is

our music/band/librarian. Ms. Owen coordinated our Christmas program

which was wonderful. It was Ms. Owen’s first production, and it was a

huge success.

Let’s look at our Kindergarten class. They are continuing to keep Mrs.

Lewis very busy. They have learned some prayers, have prayed with us at

our weekly Masses, and are reading books. They celebrated the 100th day of

school in real style! The students brought in 100 items, some of which were

edible. They also had a great time reading Dr. Seuss books during his

birthday week. It is a real joy seeing their happy smiling faces each morn-

ing. Please pass this on: Our registration day for kindergarten for 2016-

2017 school year is April 15th. If you know of someone with a child ready

for kindergarten have them call the office and set up a time to register.

The First graders have been busy reading, doing math, and learning about

God. They have actively participated in our school Masses by doing the

readings and the intercessions. This class has some very good readers.

There have been a few times when they even acted out the Gospel. It is a

real joy to watch them. At this time of the year, they and all of the other

classes are beginning to take the IOWA Basic Skills Test.

Second Grade is a very special year. In December, the students received the

Sacrament of Reconciliation . It was a great experience for them. They came out of the confessional with

beautiful smiles on their faces. It was a great day! They are now looking forward to receiving the

sacrament of the Holy Eucharist on May 1st. Please keep them in your prayers. This class is also very

interested in reading and math. They have done very well on the Star Reading and Star Math programs.

They used their creative skills in science class when we studied sound. At the conclusion of the lesson, the

students created their own homemade musical instruments

Third Graders have had a great year! They wanted to be examples of Christ to others. They set a goal to

do 100 Random Acts of Kindness for other people. They reached their goal of 100 Random Acts between

the 100th day and Valentine’s Day (just over two weeks). They now have set a new goal for themselves to

see how many Random Acts they can do by the end of the school year. Their goal is to spread the light of

Christ through acts of kindness and to encourage other to be lights for the world.

The Fourth Graders have been praying a decade of the rosary daily as a class and focusing on one Sorrow-

ful Mystery a week. This is a wonderful practice that they hope will continue here or at home even when

Lent is over. They also have a big project coming up in the Spring. On April 28 and 29, the students will

be participating in a wax museum. They are working on researching a famous person so that they can be

that person when they present the wax museum to the other students, their parents, and visitors. All are

invited to come to Piqua Catholic’s Wax Museum.

March is National Youth Art Month. In our art classes this spring, students will be celebrating the

birthdays of famous artists. They will be working in collaboration to create large replicas of master paint-

ings. Keep an eye out for our student artwork, our mall window display, and collaborative works to

be auctioned off later this spring. We are also celebrating the arrival of our new stainless steel port-

able sink in the art room! It was such a grace to be able to receive a grant for this new addition.

Center for Early Learning: Introducing Anita Polakowski

“Nothing is more gratifying than putting a smile on a child’s face,” said Anita Polakowski, a Teacher’s Aide

at the Center for Early Learning at Piqua Catholic, “I enjoy helping to enrich their lives as they start on their

educational journey.”

In her second year at CFEL, Anita can be found every morning working with

the 3-4 year-olds. She also helps with the Lunch Bunch and the Aftercare,

usually helping to get the children settled down for their afternoon nap before

she leaves for the day.

Anita, born in Poland, moved to Canada and then to Ohio, when her husband,

Andy, was employed by Panasonic in Troy. She earned a BS Degree in

Accounting from Wright State University and is a CPA. The Polakowskis have

two daughters — Karolina, 12, and Aga, 9. Sam, a small, mixed lab completes

the family.

“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher,” she said, “Being the oldest of nine first

cousins, I learned a lot by taking care of them and gained additional

knowledge from raising my own daughters.” Also, Anita has been involved

with Piqua Parents As Teachers for two years.

For fun and relaxation, Anita enjoys knitting, crocheting, hiking, spending time with her family, traveling and

participating in Zumba classes at the YMCA.

Although he serves as pastor for St. John/St. Lewis Parish in

Portsmouth on the picturesque island of Dominica, Father Herman

Sharplis has discovered a “home away from home” in Piqua where he

recently concluded a whirlwind visit as part of our Lenten program.

The congenial priest reflected on his visit before departing for

Brooklyn, N.Y. to visit friends. Attired in a lightweight jacket bearing

the Knights of Columbus insignia and name of Fr. Tom Bolte, Father

Sharplis explained he didn’t want to chance any inclement weather

being accustomed to the Caribbean’s 80 degree temps. Father Bolte, he

mused, gave him the jacket during his initial visit here in 2014.

He described his second visit to Piqua as “successful” and expressed

appreciation to the myriad students and adults who welcomed him as a

Lenten speaker at both parishes. Throughout the week, the visiting

priest preached at all morning Masses, enjoyed coffee and doughnuts

with parishioners, assisted with Stations of Cross emphasizing the “Year of Mercy” — specifically

the corporal and spiritual works of mercy -- and also helped with a healing Mass at St. Boniface.

In addition, Father Sharplis was the main celebrant for the Northern Area All-School Mass at Holy

Angels Church in Sidney and addressed students at Lehman Catholic High School as well as Piqua

Catholic School. He enjoyed potluck dinners with both the Twinning and Mission Committee

members and feasted on parish council members’ favorite potluck creations prior to a talk at St.

Mary Church using as his topic “God’s Mercy Leads Us to Heaven”. During his visit he was treated

to visits by Cincinnati Archdiocese Mission Office Director Mike Gable, the Rev. Len Wenke and

Pat Plus.

He describes a visit with the CCD Faith Formation students as particularly “special”. One young

boy, Jackson Hemmert, asked if he could come to Dominica to “help” Father Sharplis. The son of

Erin and Aaron Hemmert, it was explained by his mother, would like to become a priest and was

inspired by Father Sharplis’ message.

His homilies and retreat presentations at our two parishes have been wonderful. The folks that

attended voiced the same appreciation for Father’s insights and the same concern that we wished

more parishioners would have attended. Those of us that did attend the retreat came away with a re-

newed spirit and new insights into the depths of God’s mercy.

Father Sharplis, who was born and raised in Dominica, has four brothers and four sisters and was

raised in a loving home. He attended secondary school at St. Mary Academy in Dominica and

studied for the priesthood at St. John Vianney and The Uganda Martyrs Seminary in Trinidad. He

has a love for nature and passion for gardening.

In addition to gardening, Father Sharplis has a passion for the twinning program suggesting that the

program enables parishioners from both Dominica and Piqua to “cement relationships” and form a

better understanding adding “prejudice occurs because of a lack of understanding”. Twinning, he

added, provides a “treasured moment” and sense as to “why the Holy Spirit does what it does”. In

essence, he noted, “God is not limited to one group of people. I am happy to share my ability with all

people . Twinning is a very successful and uplifting experience for me.” (Reprinted Catholic Telegraph)

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the

Dominica and abroad

February 2009

The New York Portsmouth Roman Catholic Church Rebuilding Ini-

2011 through 2016

Over the last 5 years, progress on the Church has been tremendous,

but there have been stops and starts in the construction cycle as

funding allowed. At the present time, the Church facility is entirely

under roof, all the walls are up, a few windows are in place and

restoration of the original altar, lector podium, and Holy Eucharist

Adoration altar are near completion.

St John/St. Lewis is very

close to completing their
